Silversea Luxury Cruises A ST. KITTS (Basseterre)

ST. KITTS (Basseterre)
ST. KITTS (Basseterre)

Mountainous St. Kitts, the first English settlement in the Leeward Islands, crams some stunning scenery into its 65 square miles (168 square km). Vast, brilliant green fields of sugarcane (the former cash crop, now slowly being replanted) run to the shore. The fertile, lush island has some fascinating natural and historical attractions: a rain forest replete with waterfalls, thick vines, and secret trails; a central mountain range dominated by the 3,792-foot Mt. Liamuiga, whose crater has long been dormant; and Brimstone Hill, known in the 18th century as the Gibraltar of the West Indies. St. Kitts and Nevis, along with Anguilla, achieved self-government as an associated state of Great Britain in 1967. In 1983 St. Kitts and Nevis became an independent nation. English with a strong West Indian lilt is spoken here. People are friendly but shy; always ask before you take photographs. Also, be sure to wear wraps or shorts over beach attire when you're in public places.

Excursions depuis ST. KITTS (Basseterre)

A Day in the Hills at Belle Mont Farm

Experience the splendid natural beauty and flavours of St. Kitts during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion with lunch at Kittitian Hill.

Port Zante, Basseterre, Berkeley Memorial, Independence Square

Depart the pier for the short drive through the capital city of Basseterre, the oldest town in the eastern Caribbean. Along the way, see elements of French and British colonisation that have been carefully preserved, including the Berkeley Memorial, Independence Square (a former slave market) and the impressive architecture of the buildings surrounding them.

Bloody Point, Bloody River, Sir Thomas Warner's Tomb, Kittitian Hill

Next, drive to Bloody Point for a photo stop at the Bloody River, site of a major battle in 1626. Afterward, re-board your coach and proceed for a photo stop at Sir Thomas Warner's Tomb, then continue driving through local villages en route to the unique Kittitian Hill, home of the Belle Mont Farm. Kittitian Hill encompasses 400 acres of organic farmland and tropical forest; it's an edible landscape, planted with organically-grown fruit and vegetables. See 'Pick Me' signs hanging where the ripest fruit is ready to be picked and enjoyed, as well as indigenous plants that serve as natural habitats for wildlife while reducing the need for irrigation. In conjunction with the organic farm, a botanical collection of rare and heirloom tropical fruit trees has been planted to help protect local endangered species.

Belle Mont Farm, Lunch

During your visit to the Belle Mont Farm, take a guided tour of the farm and enjoy this one-of-a-kind farm-to-table experience with lunch in the middle of the farm. Set in the centre of the 400-acre (about 162-hectare) farm among herbs, vegetables and fruit crops, an approximately 30-foot-long (about nine-metre-long) table provides a communal dining experience for your meal, which is prepared with ingredients grown from the surrounding garden. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 820 yards (about 750 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 10-30 steps at the sites visited.

This tour is not suitable for guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended; camouflage or suggestive clothing is not permitted. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Accessible St. Kitts

This accessible St. Kitts shore excursion gives you a perfect overview of the charming island of St. Kitts. Visit the popular Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik factory, experience the UNESCO World Heritage Site Brimstone Fortress and visit the breathtaking Timothy Hill Panoramic outlook.

Start your day by meeting your guide and accessible van at the St. Kitts cruise dock. From here, you will head out on a short drive through the capital city Basseterre. Here you will admire colorful island homes, beautiful old architecture and a few city highlights, before heading out on a drive through the rainforest to the first stop of your tour, Romney Manor and Caribelle Batik. Romney Manor is an old sugar plantation dating back to the 1626, with beautiful old ruins, vibrant lush grounds and a centuries old saman tree. On the property, you will find the Caribelle Batik store and exhibition. See how batik is made and browse the shop for gifts. While parts of the venue are inaccessible due to grass and steps, your guide will lead you using the accessible routes to show you as much of the venue as possible. The Batik store and demonstration is accessible via a ramp.

Next, your tour continues to Brimstone Fortress and National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This well-preserved fortress is located on a hill and offers spectacular views of the ocean and old ruins. The lower level of the fort is accessible with mostly flat grounds. There is some grass if you wish to get close to the old ruins or the cannons. The movie room and gift shop are fully accessible with ramps. Please note that the upper part of the Fort is not accessible. On your way back to Basseterre, you will make a stop at an accessible restaurant to enjoy a lunch on your own.

While you will stop and experience many beautiful viewpoints along your drive, Timothy Hill Scenic Outlook may turn out to be your very favorite. You will have a unique opportunity to capture beautiful photos with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Caribbean Ocean on the other. The viewpoint is mostly flat and has gravel. There are small vendor stands with souvenirs and snacks located by the viewpoint as well.

Please Note: This tour is designed to be accessible for all guests. It is suitable for guests on a wheelchair who can transfer to a seat. Full time wheelchair users, are kindly requested to contact shoreconcierge@silversea.com in order to provide further details and determine if the tour is suitable for them. The number of accessible vehicles is extremely limited and guests are encouraged to make their accessible shore excursion reservations in advance. All aboard the 'Last Railway in the West Indies', the St. Kitts Scenic Railway. This unique island tour runs in a complete circle around St. Kitts allowing guests the opportunity to see the entire country by rail and highway in only three hours.

St. Kitts Scenic Railway

No trip to this two-island federation is complete without the experience of traveling on the St. Kitts Scenic Railway. This one-of-a-kind narrow gauge railroad was built almost a century ago to deliver sugar cane from the fields to the sugar mill in the capital city of Basseterre. The railway now provides a fascinating way to see the island from the comfort of double-deck railcars built specifically for touring the island of St. Kitts. The upper level features a spacious open-air observation deck with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The lower level provides air-conditioned comfort with expansive six-foot vaulted windows. Island ambiance is evoked with comfortable rattan furniture, complimentary specialty drinks, island music sung by the Scenic Railway Choir, and a colorful narrative history of the Caribbean.

On this memorable journey, the railway hugs the Northeastern coastline where rippling fields of sugarcane stretch from the shoreline up to the mountains. The high volcanic peaks rise nearly 4,000 feet above sea level, coated with lush green rainforests. The train rolls across tall steel bridges spanning deep 'ghuts', or canyons, and winds through small villages and farms. Your railway tour narrator will point out abandoned sugar estates with overgrown chimneys and windmills, and provide insight into the island's unique history. The duration of the train ride is approximately 1.5 hour.

Scenic Drive

Your experience is complimented by a scenic drive on board the along the Southwestern coast. Enjoy vistas of Brimstone Hill Fortress, the British 'Gibraltar of the West Indies', Middle Island where Thomas Jefferson's great-grandfather is buried, and the neighboring island of Nevis, birthplace of American statesman Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the U.S. Treasury.

Please note: This tour involves minimal walking and is recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests utilising a wheelchair. Wheelchair guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach (2 steps) and the train (3 steps). The order of train and bus tour portions of the program may be reversed.

Yoga at Fairview Great House
