Silversea Luxury Cruises A Bari

Bari, capital of the province of Apulia, lies on southern Italy's Adriatic coast. Its busy port is a leading commercial and industrial centre as well as a transit point for travellers catching ferries across the Adriatic to Greece. Bari comprises a new and an old town. To the north, on a promontory between the old and new harbours, lies the picturesque old town, or Citta Vecchia, with a maze of narrow, crooked streets. View more

To the south is the spacious and regularly planned new town, which has developed considerably since 1930, when the Levant Fair was first held here. The heart of the modern town is Piazza della Liberta. The busy thoroughfare, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, separates the new town from the old. At the eastern end of the Corso begins the Lungomare Nazario Sauro, a magnificent seafront promenade that runs along the old harbour. Bari and the Apulian region were long recognized for their strategic location, attracting a succession of colonizers such as the Normans, Moors and Spaniards, each leaving their mark.

Discover Bari

Experience the scenic beauty and Old World charm of Bari during a memorable half-day walking tour of this historic city.

Depart the pier for a scenic drive along Bari's seafront and modern district to the old town centre. En route, a photo stop is made at the Swabian Castle.

Swabian Castle

Originally built by Frederick II upon earlier Norman fortifications, the Swabian Castle's present appearance is the result of modifications carried out by the Aragonese family in the 1500s, when the castle became the residence of Isabel of Aragon.

Bari

Upon arrival in Bari's city centre, commence your walking tour of the Old Town to explore the historic sites and gain an insight into the local lifestyle. Along the way, a visit is made to the Cathedral of Saint Sabino.

Cathedral of Saint Sabino

Dedicated to Saint Sabino, this Apulian-Romanesque style cathedral was built in the second half of the 12th century. The façade boasts three portals and a rose window with imaginary monstrous creatures. At the rear of the cathedral, a stop is made to admire the 12th-century window with a decorated canopy supported by columns.

Next, your walking tour proceeds through Strada del Carmine before arriving at the Basilica of Saint Nicholas.

Basilica of Saint Nicholas

The symbol of Bari, the basilica houses the mortal remains of Saint Nicholas. According to a local legend, 62 sailors went to Myra, Turkey in 1087, stole the saint's remains and brought them to Bari. Consecrated in 1197, the church is one of the masterpieces of the Apulian-Romanesque style, and features an imposing limestone façade flanked by two large bell towers. The interior hosts two unique examples of Medieval sculpture: a ciborium with figured capitals, and the bishop's throne, known as 'Elia's Chair'. The basilica is a place of pilgrimage, particularly for believers from Eastern Europe. The impressive, ornately-decorated crypt is adorned with rich colours. Leaving the basilica, proceed for the short walk to Via Venezia, Piazza Mercantile and Piazza Ferrarese.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available to further explore the Old Town's narrow cobbled streets and squares, impressive façades of Medieval buildings and ancient walls. You may also sip a cappuccino at a local café and watch the locals going about their daily routine.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach for the return drive to the pier, or spend some additional time in the city and return to the ship at your own expense.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with some steps to negotiate, and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
