Silversea Luxury Cruises A Bandar Abbas

Bandar Abbas is the capital of Hormozgan province and, at the same time, occupies a strategic position on the narrow Straits of Hormuz, which makes the port the most important commercial centre of Iran in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea. View more

In the 1500s the Portuguese established a port here to facilitate their trade route to India, but after a fierce naval battle backed by the British, Shah Abbas the Great expelled the Portuguese and the port was named Bandar Abbas in his honour, or Gombraun as it was known to the English-speaking world. Most of the commercial ships with cargo for Iran and the Ottoman Empire from India, anchored in this port. In the first half of the 17th century, the East Indian Company established a post here, which was later transferred to Basra. Bandar Abbas was leased to the Sultan of Muscat and when the contract was cancelled in 1868, the city came under the administration of Iran. Today, Bandar Abbas is the country’s largest and best equipped port, where 75 percent of all Iranian imports are off-loaded.
