Silversea Luxury Cruises A Bali (Benoa)

Bali (Benoa)

Bali really is as alluring as everyone says. This island, slightly bigger than Delaware, has it all: beaches, volcanoes, terraced rice fields, forests, renowned resorts, surfing, golf, and world-class dive sites. But what sets Bali apart from other nearby tropical destinations is Balinese tradition, and villagers dedicated to celebrating it. The hundreds of temples, dances, rituals, and crafts linked to their ancient Hindu faith aren't a show for tourists, but a living, breathing culture in which visitors are warmly received by the Balinese, who cherish their own identities.

The fantastic ceiling murals, in the traditional " wayang " style of painting, depict the punishments in hell for wrong doers, as well as the rewards in heaven for those who are good and honest in their lifetime. DAY ONE - Thu, Feb 12, 2015 - Bali/Yogyakarta

Departing the ship at Benoa, begin your Mid-Voyage Land Adventure travelling through lush, tropical landscape to Celuk Village.  Celuk Village is located in the district Sukawati within six miles (10 km) from the city of Denpasar and is known for its excellence in production of gold and silver crafting. Most of the shopkeepers, Balinese artists, are well-accomplished gold and silver smiths.  See them at their craft and if you wish, time is available to peruse and purchase.  Try to negotiate in rupiah and aim for about 50-60% of asking price.

Continue to Batuan Temple, a beautiful Hindu temple set in the middle of Batuan Village. It is a local village temple and a part of three major temples in a village that is called Tri Khayangan. Batuan Temple features three areas - Nista Mandala (outside area), Madya Mandala (Middle area,) and Utama Mandala (Main temple area). The temple is designed beautifully with Balinese ornaments and the temple roof is made from the fibre of chromatic black palm tree.

Leaving the Batuan Temple, proceed to local restaurant for lunch.  Afterwards, transfer to the Denpasar Airport for an 80-minute flight to Yogyakarta in Central Java.  Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to the five-star Hyatt Regency Hotel for check-in. Dinner will be at the hotel.

DAY TWO - Friday, Feb 13, 2015 - Sights of Yogyakarta

After breakfast, depart the hotel head out of the city to the Prambanan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This temple is steeped in legend and represents a masterpiece of early Hindu culture. The entire complex spans several square miles, with large areas still waiting to be excavated and restored. Of significant interest is the central compound, where the main building, surrounded by several smaller temples, rises 154 feet (47 meters) above the ground. Following an earthquake in May 2006, Prambanan was closed for a time, but has since been reopened.

Continue with an orientation of Royal Yogyakarta. Learn about the city's rich history and cultural heritage. In the centre of the city stands the Sultan's Palace, or Kraton. Built in the mid-18th century, the palace is comprised of two parts, the Main Court and Residence, which still serves as the home of the sultans of the Mataram Kingdom to this day. During a guided tour of the palace, fascinating details are revealed as you pass through ornate reception halls, the Throne Room and Gallery, where exhibits include the royal family tree and photographs. Other rooms contain displays of gifts from various state visits and other royal mementoes.

Next, proceed for lunch at the nearby open-air Bale Raos Restaurant. After lunch, visit the Tamansari Water castle. Built in 1758, this large complex once served as a pleasure garden for the royal family. Today, some of its old grandeur can still be found among the ruins.  Finally, stop at the Bird Market featuring rows of bird cages lining both sides of the street.

The coach then returns you to the hotel.  At the appointed time, meet your guide and meet depart for dinner at a local restaurant, after which you are treated to a traditional dance performance.  Retire back to the hotel.

Overnight at the Hyatt Regency Hotel - Yogyakarta.

DAY THREE - Saturday, Feb 14, 2015 - Yogyakarta/Borobudur/Semarang

After breakfast and check out, depart the hotel and begin the journey to Semarang. About 60 minutes into your drive, arrive at magnificent Borobudur, Indonesia's most famous temple complex. Built in the 9th century with more than two million cubic feet of stone, Borobudur is the world's largest Buddhist monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its fame ranks with Egypt's Great Pyramids and Cambodia's Angkor Wat.

The construction of Borobudur exhausted five generations of Central Java's people. Yet, within little more than a century after completion, Borobudur was mysteriously abandoned. When neighbouring Mount Merapi erupted, volcanic ash covered the site, concealing the monument for the better part of a millennium. It was rediscovered in 1814 when Thomas Stamford Raffles visited Semarang and heard rumours of a mountain of Buddhist sculptures in stone. During the next century, Borobudur's painstaking excavation and restoration was accomplished at a cost of $25 million. Today, this awesome monument stands as a symbol of an ancient and glorious heritage.

At the end of your visit, a buffet awaits at the nearby Manohara Restaurant. After lunch, continue your journey through the Central Java highlands, with a brief rest stop at Banaran 9 Café for toilet stop and refreshment.

From here, the last stretch takes 1.5 hours to reach the Semarang pier, where the ship welcomes you back from your Indonesian escapade.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking at the temple sites, with many steps to climb and is recommended for guests in good physical condition. It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring sun protection, insect repellent and your camera.
