More than 3,000 years of history have left Yemen with a unique cultural heritage. Divided by political and ethnic conflicts, the country’s southern part became an independent state in November of 1967, following a revolution in 1963 to oppose British rule. The Marxist National Liberation Front overthrew the British-backed Royalists. In 1990, North and South Yemen were reunited and today this is the only multi-party democracy in the Arabian Peninsula.
