Silversea Luxury Cruises A VALPARAISO

VALPARAISO
VALPARAISO

Valparaíso's dramatic topography—45 cerros, or hills, overlooking the ocean—requires the use of winding pathways and wooden ascensores (funiculars) to get up many of the grades. The slopes are covered by candy-color houses—there are almost no apartments in the city—most of which have exteriors of corrugated metal peeled from shipping containers decades ago. Valparaíso has served as Santiago's port for centuries. Before the Panama Canal opened, Valparaíso was the busiest port in South America. Harsh realities—changing trade routes, industrial decline—have diminished its importance, but it remains Chile's principal port. View more

Most shops, banks, restaurants, bars, and other businesses cluster along the handful of streets called El Plan (the flat area) that are closest to the shoreline. Porteños (which means "the residents of the port") live in the surrounding hills in an undulating array of colorful abodes. At the top of any of the dozens of stairways, the paseos (promenades) have spectacular views; many are named after prominent Yugoslavian, Basque, and German immigrants. Neighborhoods are named for the hills they cover. With the jumble of power lines overhead and the hundreds of buses that slow down—but never completely stop—to pick up agile riders, it's hard to forget you're in a city. Still, walking is the best way to experience Valparaíso. Be careful where you step, though—locals aren't very conscientious about curbing their dogs.

Estancia Day in the Casablanca Valley (For In-Transit Guests)

Discover the wonderful traditions, flavours and scenery of the Casablanca Valley during this memorable, full-day excursion to Estancia El Cuadro.

Casablanca Valley and Estancia El Cuadro

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to the heart of the Casablanca Valley for a visit to Estancia El Cuadro, one of the most prestigious winegrowing locales of the world. Casablanca Valley vineyards, first planted in the early-1980s, have earned worldwide recognition in a relatively short space of time. The warm, temperate climate of the area is greatly influenced by the coastal sea breezes, which, in combination with a perfect terroir in a valley situated on the coastal plane, provide ideal conditions varieties of grape.

Chilean Rodeo Show and Folkloric Dance Demonstration

Upon arrival at the approximately 1,730-acre (about 700-hectare) Estancia El Cuadro, take in a lively presentation of the 'huasos' (Chilean cowboys) showing their skills on the ground, expertly manoeuvring the reins to guide their horses' movements followed by a demonstration of Chile's national dance, the 'Cueca'.

Wine Tasting and Chilean Barbecue

Next, proceed to the wine tasting room. This room is a trip back in time, a wine museum that boasts an original machinery collection used for the production of wine and liquor during the early-1900s. Learn the secrets of climate, soil and the geographical characteristics of this valley, and sample two varieties of wine. Following your wine tasting, enjoy a traditional Chilean barbecue. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and drive back to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 328 yards (about 300 metres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the Estancia El Cuadro. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must be at least 21 years old to participate in tastings of alcoholic beverages. The order of the events might vary.

Santiago City (Tour & Airport Transfer)

This tour is designed for guests with flights leaving Santiago International Airport after 7:30p.m. on disembarkation day.

Chile's sprawling capital lies some 120 km (75 miles) from Valparaiso, and is one of South America's most sophisticated cities, and a thriving metropolis that is home to almost six million friendly santiaguinos, over a third of Chile's entire population.

Leave the pier travelling east towards Santiago passing by the famous Casablanca and Curacavi Valleys. In Santiago, explore the major sights of downtown and uptown areas with the aim of showing Santiago's contrasts between the city's colonial heart, and its modern side.

Palacio de La Moneda

The first stop will be in the administrative and governmental heart of the city where the Palacio de La Moneda Government Palace sits. Originally a colonial mint ('moneda' means coin), it was designed by Italian architect Joaquín Toesca, opening in 1805 while still under construction. While the Palace served as presidential residence between 1845 and 1930, today it houses the offices of the President and three Cabinet ministers: Interior, General Secretariat of the Presidency and General Secretariat of the Government.

Plaza de Armas

Continue to the Plaza de Armas, the city's most famous square surrounded by some beautiful buildings including the impressive Cathedral and Central Post Office.

Before heading to San Cristobal Hill, a 3 course lunch will be served in a leading restaurant nearby.

San Cristobal Hill

Following lunch, continue through the city's uptown area en route to San Cristobal Hill, providing a contrast to the more traditional constructions seen earlier in the day. A magnificent view of the city and the omnipresent Andes is a fitting way to round off the tour of the nation's capital before heading for a sightseeing drive through the upper districts of Santiago and on to the airport to take your flight home.

Please note: This tour is designed for guests with flights leaving Santiago International Airport after 7:30p.m. on disembarkation day. Tour involves minimal walking and is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair. Guests should dress in lightweight casual clothing and wear flat, walking shoes. Tour includes a 3-course lunch accompanied by 1 glass of wine or local beer per person, 1 bottled mineral water and coffee at a leading Santiago restaurant.

In-transit guests can explore the splendid art, culture and history of Chile during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Viña del Mar, Fonck Museum, Moai Statue and Artefacts

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to Viña del Mar. On the first floor is an interesting collection of Chilean, Pre-Columbian cultural artefacts; the second floor features an exhibition of flora and fauna.

Leaving the Fonck Museum, re-board your coach and head towards La Florida Hill for a visit to La Sebastiana. This museum was the former home of Pablo Neruda, the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet. He lived and worked in this five-storey house, which offers a magnificent view of the bay.

Plaza Sotomayor, Heroes of Iquique Monument and Intendencia

Next, re-board your coach and continue on for a brief stop at Plaza Sotomayor, where the monument to the Heroes of Iquique was unveiled in 1886. Built in 1919, it now houses the Commanding Headquarters of the Naval Zone. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 394 yards (about 360 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 20 steps at the Fonck Museum and 50 steps at the La Sebastiana Museum; elevators are available at the Fonck Museum. Day 3 - EASTER ISLAND

After a leisurely breakfast meet your guide and head along the southeast coast at Ahu Hanga Te'e in the sector of Vaihu. From Vaihu continue on to the Ahu Akahanga also known as the "platform of the king". According to legends this is the site where the bones of the first king of Easter Island (Hotu Matua) are buried. A short drive follows to Ahu Tongariki, formerly the largest platform on the Island destroyed by a tidal wave in 1960, but since reconstructed. From there, continue to the spectacular Rano Raraku quarry, so symbolic of the island and the original "factory" of the moais. The gigantic statues cover the inner and outer slopes of the volcano; they can be admired in the different stages of production, from carving in the rock to upright position, and lying face down on their intended road to their platforms.

The tour continues along the north coast and passes through La Perousse Bay to stop at Ahu Te Pito Kura. This is the site of the largest moai ever transported and erected onto an ahu. The moai paro stood at 9.8 meters with an estimated weight of 82 tons. Its top knot alone weighs approximately 11 tons. It is also believed to be the last moai to be toppled, sometime in the 1840's.

The next stop is the beach of Anakena where according to native legend Hotu Matua first landed on Rapa Nui. At this site you will see the Ahu Nau Nau partially restored in 1978 by Rapa Nui Archeologist Sergio Rapu. Located in this same area is the Ahu Ature Huki. The moai standing on this ahu was the first moai to ever be re-erected onto an ahu. This was done by a group of islanders working with Thor Heyerdahl and the Norwegian expedition in 1956. A tasty boxed lunch is served in a shaded area at Anakena Beach or at Rano Raraku Volcano.

From Anakena, take the inland road for a visit to the incredible Rano Kau volcano and the Orongo ceremonial village, site of the famous "birdman" competitions that came to an abrupt halt 150 years ago when the first Christian Missionaries arrived to the island. From this peak, look out at the panoramic view of miles and miles of ocean, and the tiny islands of Moto Iti, Moto Kau Kau and Moto Nui.

Enjoy your final dinner on the island this evening.

Overnight at the Hongaroa Eco Village - Easter Island, Chile

3N PRE-CRUISE: CHILEAN WINE ROUTE

Enjoy a short introduction to the famed Chilean Wine Route. The Colchagua Valley lies between Chile's capital and the Pacific Coast, with an ideal climate for the robust reds - Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, etc. - that have caused such a stir in the wine world. Visit two wineries and the Colchagua Museum.

Please note: Guests participating in this program should schedule their flights into Santiago Airport.

Day 1 - SANTIAGO

If your flight arrives in the early morning, you may wish to reserve an additional night to guarantee immediate check-in upon arrival. Dinner this evening is served at the hotel.

Overnight at the Hotel Santaigo - Santiago, Chile.

Day 2 - SANTIAGO / SANTA CRUZ

Following breakfast this morning, meet your guide for the 2.5h drive to the Colchagua Valley. The Andes mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to the morning. The valley itself is prized for formidable red wines and is home to over 30 wineries. Inhabited for over 10,000 years, this valley's airidity has preserved hundreds of sites making this area an archaeological gold mine of sand-preserved mummies, fossilized dinosaur footprints, and a nice cool weather to grow succulent grape vines.

Originally from Bordeaux, a region known as the birthplace of the world's great red wines, the Malbec variety is known for its intense cherry-red color, sweet, friendly tannins, and pronounced notes of fruits and spices. Although it is most often associated with Argentina, it is also very successfully grown Chile.Viña Viu Manent, located in the heart of the Colchagua Valley, was a pioneer in producing Malbec in Chile when it began 20 years ago. In 1993 this family-owned and operated winery made Chile's first 100% Malbec wine from grapes grown on vines that were nearly a century old.

Lunch is served this afternoon at a local restaurant.

This afternoon, spend some time at the Colchagua Museum. This private institution includes a collection of nearly 7,000 items mainly related to the disciplines of Paleontology, Archeology, History of Chile and much more. Few visitors can imagine that behind its modest facade, typical of the Chilean colonial time, one can find an exhibit of the one of the most dramatic rescues of modern times - an almost exact replica of the underground refuge of "San Jose" mine and the "Fenix" capsule that rescued the 33 trapped miners.

At the end of your visit, check-in to your hotel. Take some time to relax and freshen-up before dinner is served at the hotel.

Overnight at the Santa Cruz Plaza Hotel - Santa Cruze, Chile

Please note, there are no 5-star properties in Santa Cruz. This property is considered a 4-star hotel and offers comfortable, though not lavish, accommodations.

Breakfast is served at your hotel this morning. Then it's time to meet your guide again for a visit to the boutique Neyen de Apalta winery, where so-called 'new world' wines are produced with the help of the unique soil and well-aged vines. Thought extinct for more than a century in its native Bordeaux, the Colchagua valley is now the best place in the world to sample wines made from the recently rediscovered Carménère grape.

The Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon vines that were planted in 1890 now produce excellent fruit due to their deep roots and natural balance. The tour of the winery will allow you to appreciate their hundred-year-old grapevines dating back to late nineteenth century, as well as both its modern vinification techniques and the historical cellar ending with a wine tasting.

Lunch today is served picnic-style.
