Silversea Expedition Cruises A Tulear

Tulear

A younger city than many others in Madagascar, Tulear (or Toliara) was created in 1895. Much of the cityscape was planned by a French architect who foresaw the value and beauty of planting a plenitude of trees around the city that now provide shade from the extreme heat and sun. The city of over 156,000 has an important local university, which cares for the main museums of the city (and the main attractions in town), the Museum of Arts and Traditions and the Museum of the Sea. Within reach of Tulear is also the Isalo National Park in the Ihorombe Region of Madagascar. Exquisitely gorgeous, the park is known for its wide variety of terrains, including sandstone formations, deep canyons, palm-lined oases, and grassland.

Excursiones en Tulear

Antsokay Botanical Gardens

Embrace the scenic splendour of Madagascar during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Tulear, Local Market and Andatabo Mountain

Depart the pier for the short drive across the town of Tulear. After a stop at the bustling and colourful local market, continue eastward along the National 7 Highway. A photo stop is made at Andatabo Mountain for spectacular panoramic vistas overlooking the Mozambique Channel and town of Tulear.

Antsokay Botanical Garden

Next, re-board your coach and head to the Antsokay Botanical Garden. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour. Along the way, learn about the natural history, flora and fauna of Madagascar, and view baobabs, euphorbias, didieras, aloes, acacias, and many other endemic species. Following your tour, proceed to the Arboretum restaurant for refreshments accompanied by an Antandroy folk music demonstration performed by a local band.

Oceanographical Museum

Afterward, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier. En route, a brief stop is made at the Oceanographical Museum. Here, view the renowned coelacanth, considered to be a 'living' fossil, and with many other fish species.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 656 yards (about 600 metres), at times over uneven surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the 4WD vehicle. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with back or neck problems, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.
