Silversea Luxury Cruises A Suez

Suez sprawls around the shores of the gulf where the Red Sea meets the southern entrance of the Suez Canal. The town is basically a transit point for tankers, cargo vessels and private yachts en route to or from the Mediterranean. Some travelers pass through Suez on their way to the Sinai or the Red Sea beaches, and the Moslem faithful use this part of the Gulf of Suez as one of the departure points for the pilgrimage to Mecca. Suez was all but destroyed during the 1967 and 1973 wars with Israel, although there is little evidence of the devastation today. Three U.S.-made Israeli tanks sit on the Corniche as a memorial to the wars. With little to offer in the way of tourist facilities, an acknowledged pastime is watching ships passing in and out of the Suez Canal. Otherwise, excursions to Cairo or the canal city of Ismailia are recommended. Pier Information The ship is scheduled to dock at Port Tewfiq. The distance to town is six miles. Taxis are only allowed at the entrance to the port. It is important to establish the fare before leaving the port area. Be sure to carefully check the condition of the taxi. Shopping Stores in the center of town offer limited shopping; of interest may be pharaonic souvenirs. The local currency is the Egyptian pound. Cuisine While the options are extremely limited, guests who wish to have the experience of a meal ashore may want to try the Red Sea Hotel. Other Sites Take the shuttle bus to the town center and get a feeling of local life. Be aware that conditions are very basic. A church and a memorial of three leftover tanks from the Egyptian-Israeli war are the main points of interest. It is recommended to wear moderate dress ashore.
