Silversea Luxury Cruises A Santos

Santos boasts the largest dock area in Latin America and is considered the world's foremost coffee port. A city of mostly modern buildings, wide tree-lined avenues and wealthy suburbs, Santos retains a charm that has not been extinguished by the development of an enormous port complex. Although best known for its commerce, it also offers resort facilities for city-weary Paulistas, including beautiful beaches, plenty of shops and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. For cruise vessels Santos serves as the starting point for a trip to São Paulo. View more

Founded by two Jesuit priests in 1554, São Paulo started out as a shabby little town of clay and mud-packed buildings. At the end of the 19th century, enterprising "coffee barons" began to place large amounts of their profits into local industry, helping to catapult the city into a major financial center. Immigrants arrived from all corners of the world. Today, São Paulo is the most populous city in South America and the continent's leading industrial center. Much of this incredible development can be attributed to the fact that the Paulistas are among the hardest working and most energetic people in Brazil. Another important factor is the availability of ample hydroelectric power, which greatly contributed to the city's industrial growth. Work and profit aside, the city has its attractions. But being so spread out puts a limit to what one can accomplish in a single day. Guests participating in the city tour must be aware that at best it will provide them with an overview of this immense metropolis.

Santos Highlights

Discover the splendid beauty and landmarks of the biggest port-city in Latin America during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion to Santos. Depart from the port for a 20 minute drive to the city center for a panoramic drive through its historic district.

Coffee Museum

Visit the former palace that was inaugurated in 1922 to celebrate 100 years of Brazilian independence. It was created in order to be the Coffee Trade Palace or Palacio da Bolsa do Café. The architecture of the building is quite unique and includes a 120-foot (36 metre) clock tower with four statues representing Industry, Commerce, Production and Navigation; and wall paintings that recall the history of Santos from its early times to the present day.

Pelé Museum in Valongo

Next, visit the Pelé Museum which was built in 1865 in the old Mansion of Valongo with a neoclassical style building in Largo Marques de Monte Alegre. It has served as the seat of the Chamber and the City hall of Santos (formerly called "Stewardship") between the end of nineteenth century and 1939, when the two powers moved to its current building at Maua Square.

The architectural design of the Pele Museum reconstructs the original facade of the Mansion of Valongo and created a building with twenty-first century technology.

Botanical Gardens

Lastly, enter the cool and shady realm of the Botanical Gardens to stroll among giant subtropical and tropical trees and stop to see the aviary with its macaws, toucans, and parrots. The garden's main attraction is the Orchidarium with more than 100 specimens of this exotic flower. From here, visit Gonzaga beach curving stretch of white sand that is bordered by hotels and condominiums, with appearances similar to a resort on the French Riviera before returning to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
