Silversea Expedition Cruises A SAN CRISTOBAL

SAN CRISTOBAL

Like so many of the islands in the Galapagos, San Cristobal is formed by dormant volcanoes. It lies to the east of the archipelago and is one of the oldest islands in the group. Approximately 6,000 people live on the island, making their living from tourism, fishing, in government offices, or off the rich volcanic soils with some limited farming existing in the highlands. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on the southwestern tip of the island is the capital city of the Galapagos Islands. View more

5NT PRE-CRUISE: MACHU PICCHU & SACRED VALLEY

Program subject to change

Indulge your senses with the scenic splendor and unique history of Peru. Board the legendary 'Hiram Bingham' train for a picturesque train-ride to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, explore the 'Lost City of the Incas'. Your overnight stay at the famed Sanctuary Lodge allows you to spend additional time at the historic site with fewer tourists.

Please note: Participants in this program should schedule their arrival flight into Lima, Peru.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding Peruvian and Ecuadorian visas. It is the responsibility of each guest to obtain appropriate visa documents prior to cruising.

DAY 1 - LIMA

Upon arrival in Lima, you are met and transferred from the airport to the beautiful Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel, which is renowned for its location overlooking the Pacific Ocean. After check-in, the remainder of the day and evening are at your leisure. Dinner is on your own.

Overnight at the Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel

DAY 2 - LIMA/ CUZCO/ URUBAMBA

Breakfast is served at the hotel this morning. Then return to the airport for the short 90-minute flight to Cuzco. Leaving the airport, stop for lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoon we will continue to Inkary Museum which was created thanks to an initiative of a group of artists and archaeologists who decided to show the world an impressive demonstration of the most important pre-Columbian cultures of Peru through a modern language and easy reading texts. The main goal of the project is to protect and increase a value of our history with emphasis on a human factor of the pre-Colombian societies filling up gaps of Peruvians about their ancestors.

Afterwards drive to the hotel at the Sacred Valley where dinner will be provided.

Overnight at Libertador Tambo del Inka Hotel

DAY 3 - URUBAMBA / MACHU PICCHU

Enjoy a light breakfast at the hotel this morning. After breakfast, we will continue to the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. The fortress, a formidable stone structure, was the valley's main defense against the Antis and was the site of the Incas' greatest victory against the Spanish during the wars of conquest. Constructed of rose-colored granite, this huge installation was once a thriving complex of baths, temples and military barracks. Below the fortress lies a complete Incan town, still inhabited with original architecture.

Transfer to Ollantaytambo train station where the Hiram Bingham train awaits. Depart aboard the Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu. Your rail journey celebrates the spirit of expedition and perseverance that is the hallmark of the railways of Peru, taking its name from the explorer Hiram Bingham who discovered the 'Lost City of the Incas'. Brunch is served on route.

Upon arrival at the site, commence a guided tour of the marvellous Citadel, then take a stroll through this impressive archaeological site on your own. Explore the famous "Lost City of the Incas" and feel its pulse while visualizing the lives of the priests, craftsmen, and servants who lived in this seemingly incredible site. Excavations have only added to the mystery, revealing the skeletons of 173 people along with artefacts and woollen clothing, though no gold.

Afterward, relax with afternoon tea at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel located within the very grounds of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary citadel. Dinner is served at the Lodge.

Overnight at the Belmond Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge

DAY 4 - MACHU PICCHU / CUZCO

After an early-morning breakfast at the lodge, depart for an opportunity to witness an incomparable sight (weather permitting); the sun rising over Machu Picchu. Due to the proximity of the hotel to the site, overnight guests have time in the morning to enjoy the citadel with very few other visitors around.

Return to lodge this afternoon for Lunch back at the lodge then shortly thereafter transfer to the Aguas Calientes to board Peru Rail's Vistadome train for the trip back to Ollantaytambo. On arrival at Ollantaytambo station, you are transferred to the hotel.

Dinner is on your own this evening.

Overnight at Tambo del Inka Hotel

DAY 5 - CUZCO / QUITO

After breakfast at the hotel, we will drive to Cusco city where you will enjoy a city tour. The main sights includes the Korikancha Temple, a Dominican church and convent that was built on the foundations of the Koricancha, the principal Inca religious building, dedicated to the worship of the sun. We continue to the beautiful square surrounded by stone arches and a spectacular arcade constructed during colonial times. Here we visit the Cathedral, whose construction began in 1560 and was consecrated in 1669. This incredible structure exhibits Gothic, Mannerist-Renaissance and Baroque influences.

After this, you will be transferred to the airport for your departing flight to Quito. A box lunch will be provided.

A Silversea representative will be waiting upon your arrival and transfer you to JW Marriott. Dinner will be provided this evening at the hotel.

5NT PRE-CRUISE: DEVIL'S NOSE & ANDEAN ADVENTURE

Program subject to change.

Quintessentially Ecuador, the Andean region (also known as the Sierra and the Highlands) is the most visited region in the country. Enjoy the World's highest active volcano - Cotopaxi and ride the Devil's Nose Train, a hair-raising trip down the rocky slopes of the Andes. Finish up with a panoramic city tour of Cuenca, often hailed as "the hidden treasure of Ecuador and a final stop to the vast El Cajas National park.

Please note: Participants in this program should schedule their arrival flight into Quito, Ecuador.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding Ecuadorian visas. It is the responsibility of each guest to obtain appropriate visa documents prior to cruising.

DAY 1 - QUITO

Upon arrival in Quito, you are met and transferred from the airport to the J.W. Marriott Hotel. After check-in, the remainder of the day and evening are at your leisure. Lunch and dinner are on your own.

Overnight at the J.W. Marriott Hotel - Quito, Ecuador

DAY 2 - COTOPAXI NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, check-out and meet at the appointed time.

Drive south from Quito along the stunning Avenue of the Volcanoes, a nickname bestowed by Alexander Von Humboldt, the German scientist who came to Ecuador in the 18th century and gathered valuable information on the biology and geography of the country. The park is named for its volcano, the perfectly cone-shaped Volcán Cotopaxi. One of the highest active volcanoes in the world at 19,356 feet (5,900 metres), Cotopaxi dominates the landscape.

While in the park, walk around the beautiful Laguna Limpiopungo or visit the Salitre pre-Inca ruins. Keep an eye out for wild horses and the endangered Andean Condor.

Lunch is served at Hacienda La Ciénega, a 400 year-old hacienda whose first guest was Von Humboldt himself. Continue to Hacienda San Agustín de Callo for dinner and your overnight stay. This hacienda's origins even predate those of La Ciénega. Originally a 15th Century Inca palace, San Agustín was eventually taken over by colonialists and then the Augustinians. Inca walls are still visible throughout the structure, with additional Colonial and Republican construction from the 18th and 19th Centuries, respectively.

Overnight at Hacienda San Agustín de Callo - Lasso, Ecuador

DAY 3 - COTOPAXI /QUILOTOA / RIOBAMBA

Today you will visit Laguna Quilotoa, a spectacular crater lake in the Andes after breakfast is provided at the hotel.

Drive through a fantastic mountain landscape towards the western side of the Andes. Observe small villages and fields sprinkled with farmers and shepherds along the way. One cannot see the breath-taking, aquamarine Quilotoa until the last few steps approaching the rim. Then the whole lake and its vista appears in all its splendour. All sides of the volcano have a ragged, rugged ridge which drops over 1,320 feet (400 metres) down to the shore.

While in the area, visit the villages of Tigua and Pujilí, each known for their local artisans.

After enjoying a boxed lunch, continue on to Riobamba. Surrounded by spectacular snow-capped peaks such as Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest peak at 20,565 feet, (6,310 metre), Riobamba, the former capital of Ecuador, is known as the Sultan of the Andes.

Tonight's accommodation is at Hacienda La Andaluza, surrounded by the magnificence of the Ecuadorian Andes. This 16th-century hacienda has been declared a Cultural Heritage of Ecuador. Recent updates brought many modern touches which are blended seamlessly with the historic building. For instance, all rooms have specially heated walls to insure you stay warm and cozy despite the brisk Andean nights.

Overnight at Hacienda La Andaluza - Riobamba, Ecuador

DAY 4 - RIOBAMBA / DEVIL'S NOSE TRAIN / CUENCA

Depart early this morning for one of the most beautiful and impressive train journeys on the continent. Today, this classic train ride is run purely for visitors who can enjoy the experience of travelling through the fantastic Andean scenery from Riobamba to Alausi, then the adventure of travelling down the Devil's Nose section of the line which zigzags along the edge of the Andes in a truly exhilarating and exciting ride of a lifetime. This train journey is classed amongst the most spectacular in the world. Learn about the Incas during their short time in Ecuadorian Lands and visit the monuments they left during this time.

Upon arriving in the quaint town of Alausí, board the classic train to the Devil's Nose. Along the way, we encounter breath-taking Andean scenery, the Palmira desert and, finally, the Devil's Nose itself. One of the most unique train routes in the world, and certainly one of the best known in South America, the Devil's Nose is truly an amazing feat of engineering. While constructing the Quito-Guayaquil train line in the early 20th Century, the engineers were faced with a major obstacle - The Andes. With no clear path into and out of the forbidding range, the engineers finally decided to tackle the problem head on. They created a series of switchbacks that allow the train to navigate a 45 degree rock slope while descending over 2,600 feet (800 metres). It makes for a spectacular journey through one of Ecuador's most scenic landscapes. Recently re-opened after years of reconstruction, it is now available to experience just as it was a century ago.

After descending the Devil's Nose, stop to enjoy some refreshments while exploring the beautiful surroundings. There is also a charming museum offering information about local culture, history, flora, and fauna in the area.

Arriving back in Alausí, head to the Inca ruins of Ingapirca. Before your visit, lunch will be served at a local restaurant. Ingapirca, meaning "The Inca wall" in Quichua, is the most important complex of ruins existing in the country and it was built on top of Cañari constructions which go back to 1200 AD. The site was used as a political and religious centre until the Incas conquered the Cañari and started the construction of a temple in 1460. Upon completion it served as a site for Sun worship and as a calendar for agricultural purposes. The complex also has other important sections such as the ancient residing place of the virgins of the sun, the Inca baths, and more. There is also a small museum on-site featuring artefacts from both Cañari and Inca civilizations.

Drive for about 90 minutes to Cuenca, where dinner and your hotel await.

Overnight at the Mansión Alcázar - Cuenca, Ecuador

DAY 5 - CUENCA / GUAYAQUIL

Rise and enjoy breakfast and check-out of the hotel before embarking on a panoramic tour of the city of Cuenca. Cuenca is considered by many to be the most beautiful city in the country and is often hailed as "The hidden treasure of Ecuador". It was declared a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, primarily for having been able to preserve the most valuable cultural and architectural features found in its historic centre.

Drive along Cuenca's cobblestoned streets, visiting flowery plazas and picturesque sites. See Cuenca's famous flower market and its dazzlingly colourful displays of arum lilies, orchids, and roses. Continue to the neo-Gothic 'New Cathedral' and its distinctive blue domes which dominate the skyline. Construction on the New Cathedral began in 1880; it was erected to replace the Old Cathedral (still standing across from the new one), built by the Spanish in 1557, the year the city was founded.

This afternoon, marvel at the diversity of the landscape as you drive from Andean highlands to coastal Guayaquil. During the 3-hour drive, stop at El Cajas National Park, a must-see destination for nature lovers - exotic flowers, rock formations and over 200 glacial lakes make for striking photos. Check-in at the Oro Verde Hotel in the heart of the city. Dinner tonight is on your own.

Overnight at the Oro Verde Hotel - Guayaquil, Ecuador

DAY 6 - GALÁPAGOS

After breakfast at the hotel, transfer to the airport for the onward flight to the Galápagos. Bon voyage!

DAY 3 - CUZCO / MACHU PICCHU

A light breakfast is recommended at the hotel this morning. Later, transfer to the train station in the Sacred Valley where the Hiram Bingham train awaits. Your rail journey celebrates the spirit of expedition and perseverance that is the hallmark of the railways of Peru, taking its name from the explorer Hiram Bingham who discovered the 'Lost City of the Incas'.

Brunch is served en route. Upon arrival at the site, commence a guided tour of the marvelous Citadel, then take a stroll through this impressive archaeological site on your own. Explore the famous "Lost City of the Incas" and feel its pulse while visualizing the lives of the priests, craftsmen, and servants who lived in this seemingly incredible site. Excavations have only added to the mystery, revealing the skeletons of 173 people along with artifacts and woolen clothing, though no gold.

Afterward, relax with afternoon tea at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel located within the very grounds of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary citadel. Dinner is served at the Lodge.

Spend ample time at the ruins this morning exploring on your own. An early lunch is served at the lodge. Then it's time to board the Vistadome train for the return to Cuzco. Upon arrival, return to the Hotel Monasterio. The balance of the day, including dinner, is at your leisure.

Continue to the beautiful square surrounded by stone arches and a spectacular arcade constructed during colonial times. Visit the Cathedral, whose construction was begun in 1560 and was consecrated in 1669. This incredible structure exhibits Gothic, Mannerist-Renaissance and Baroque influences.
