DAY TWO - Yogyakarta / Semarang
After breakfast and check out, depart the hotel and begin the journey to Semarang. During the 30- minute drive, learn about the city's rich history and cultural heritage. In the centre of the city stands the Sultan's Palace, or Kraton. Built in the mid-18th century, the palace is comprised of two parts, the Main Court and Residence, which still serves as the home of the sultans of the Mataram Kingdom. During a guided tour of the palace, fascinating details are revealed as you pass through ornate reception halls, the Throne Room and Gallery, where exhibits include the royal family tree and photographs. Other rooms contain displays of gifts from various state visits and other royal mementos.
Then, re-board your coach for a visit to magnificent Borobudur, Indonesia's most famous temple complex. Built in the 9th century with more than two million cubic feet of stone, Borobudur is the world's largest Buddhist monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its fame ranks with Egypt's Great Pyramids and Cambodia's Angkor Wat.
The construction of Borobudur exhausted five generations of Central Java's people. Yet, within little more than a century after completion, Borobudur was mysteriously abandoned. When neighbouring Mount Merapi erupted, volcanic ash covered the site, concealing the monument for the better part of a millennium. It was rediscovered in 1814 when Thomas Stamford Raffles visited Semarang and heard rumours of a mountain of Buddhist sculptures in stone. During the next century, Borobudur's painstaking excavation and restoration was accomplished at a cost of $25 million. Today, this awesome monument stands as a symbol of an ancient and glorious heritage.
Enjoy lunch at a local luxury hotel before continuing on the scenic drive toward the temple of Prambanan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The entire complex spans several square miles, with large areas still waiting to be excavated and restored. Of significant interest is the central compound, where the main building, surrounded by several smaller temples, rises 154 feet (47 meters) above the ground. Following an earthquake in May 2006, Prambanan was closed for a time, but has since been reopened.
At the conclusion of your visit, relax during the 90 minute drive to Semarang, where the Silversea staff and crew are waiting to welcome you back onboard.
