NICE

United with France only since 1860, Nice has its own history and atmosphere, exemplified by the stark contrast between the openness and modernity of the Promenade des Anglais to the narrow, ocher-tinted streets of the Old Town against the center of town and the sleek tramway whizzing down the main shopping thoroughfare Avenue Jean Médecin. (A second tramway line running to the airport is expected to be operational by 2017. View more

) It was on Colline du Château (now château-less) and at the Plage des Ponchettes, in front of the Old Town, that the Greeks established a market-port and named it Nikaia. Having already established Marseilles as early as the 4th century BC, they branched out along the coast and founded the city that would become Marseilles' chief coastal rival. The Romans established themselves a little later on the hills of Cimiez (Cemenelum), already previously occupied by Ligurians and Celts, and quickly overshadowed the waterfront port. After falling to the Saracen invasions, Nice regained power as an independent state, becoming an important port in the early Middle Ages. So cocksure did it become that in 1388, Nice, along with the hill towns behind, effectively seceded from the county of Provence, under Louis d'Anjou, and allied itself with Savoie. Thus began its liaison with the House of Savoy, and through it with Piedmont and Sardinia, it was the Comté de Nice (Nice County). This relationship lasted some 500 years, tinting the culture, architecture, and dialect in rich Italian hues. By the 19th century Nice was flourishing commercially, locked in rivalry with the neighboring shipping port of Genoa. Another source of income: the dawning of tourism, as first the English, then the Russian nobility discovered its extraordinary climate and superb waterfront position. A parade of fine stone mansions and hotels closed into a nearly solid wall of masonry, separated from the smooth-round rocks of the beach by what was originally named Camin deis Anglés (the English Way), which of course is now the famous Promenade des Anglais, lined by grand hotels; this magnificent crescent is one of the noblest in France. Many of Nice's most delightful attractions—the Cours Saleya market, the Old Town streets, the Hotel Negresco, and the Palais Masséna—are on or close to Nice's 10-kilometer (6-mile) waterfront, making it the first stop for most visitors. The redevelopment of Nice's port, around the other side of the château, makes it easier for amblers who want to take in the Genoese architecture in this area, or peruse the antiques at the Puces de Nice along Quai Papacino. In September, the port is transformed into an eating adventure (one of the rare occasions you'll witness the French walk and eat simultaneously) during La Fête du Port.

Antibes and Absinthe Tasting

Enjoy a half-day tour to Antibes, one of the most well-known resort towns on the Cote-D'Azur. Known as Europe's largest yacht harbour, it once was the only large town between Marseille and Italy. The only town on the coast to be protected by ramparts it has managed to conserve historic monuments from each period in its heritage.

Antibes

Your tour departs Nice for the scenic drive to Antibes. Upon arrival, depart on a guided walking tour and view the small Roman and medieval streets, walk along the ramparts overlooking the sea and visit the Provencal market, in the heart of Antibes. Here, experience a festival of fragrances and colours: olive oil and spices, fruit and flowers, fish, vegetables, and cheese. During your tour you overlook Port Vauban, Europe's largest yacht harbour, where the billionaires' super yachts are anchored.

Absinthe Tasting

After your walking tour, experience an Absinthe tasting in a quaint shop that sells regional delicacies and olive oil. The tasting takes place in a beautiful 19th century vaulted cellar with a Roman well, located underneath the market. There, amidst wonderful "Belle Époque" décor, taste toasts of tapenade, (an olive & caper paste) and pissaladière, (an open onion tart prepared by the nearby baker especially for the occasion). You have the opportunity to taste a small glass of Absinthe, the famous wormwood-based alcoholic beverage, so dear to French poets in the 19th century. The Absinthe is served from a beautiful crystal fountain on a sugar cube placed on a special spoon. Marvel in this hidden gem that on your own you may have never discovered.

Following your tasting experience, enjoy some free time before you board the coach for the return trip to Nice.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking over uneven surfaces and cobblestone streets for approximately 1400m (1 mile). This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, walking shoes and bring sun protection. Guests need to be of legal drinking age to take part in the Absinthe tasting.

Eze & St. Paul de Vence

Discover two of the most charming villages of the French Riviera with their beauty and architecture during this scenic, sightseeing tour of Eze and St. Paul de Vence. Guided tours will show you the treasures of these medieval villages, both set high atop the rocky hillsides that dominate this landscape.

Eze

Leaving Nice by way of the Middle Corniche, take in superb scenic views of Nice during the drive to the medieval village of Eze, perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the coast. Upon arrival, walk up to and through the 14th-century double gateway. Take the small, rocky path which has a splendid view of the gardens surrounding the Chateau de la Chèvre d'Or. Once inside, you will discover a small Provencal village filled with charm and colorful window boxes, offering a panoramic view of the sea and coast-line.

St. Paul de Vence

Continue your journey to this ancient hilltop village's medieval atmosphere and view first-hand how well and perfectly preserved it is. Narrow streets are flanked by 16th-century houses, most of which are now occupied by gift shops and art galleries. During the guided walking tour, stroll about the crooked lanes and see the remarkable remains of the 12th-century Gothic church. Enjoy some free time for shopping.

Following your tour, board your coach for the return to Nice.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking on uneven, steep and partially-cobblestone streets. The visit to St. Paul de Vence takes place entirely on-foot. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, walking shoes and sun protection.

Nice & Eze (Airport Transfer)

Discover the picturesque beauty and historic past of Nice during a tour of the Old City, and a visit to the medieval village of Eze.

Nice

Depart the pier for the scenic drive along the Promenade des Anglais, a splendid, palm-lined boulevard stretching for three miles along the Baie des Anges. Pass by landmarks that include the legendary 'Negresco', an imposing hotel with a rococo façade, and the Russian Orthodox Cathedral. It was built with pink bricks, light grey marble and bright ceramics crowned by six onion-shaped domes that give the city an exotic touch.

Next, a visit is made to the Old City. Here, tall houses tightly-packed across narrow streets are often festooned with bright flowers or hanging laundry, and designed to provide shade and keep the streets cool during the long, hot summers. Upon arrival, take a leisurely stroll along the Cours Saleya, the elegant promenade of Old Nice, which is now lined with shops, restaurants and the famous flower market.

Eze

Leaving Nice by way of the Middle Corniche, take in superb scenic views of Nice during the drive to the medieval village of Eze, perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the coast. Upon arrival, walk up to and through the 14th-century double gateway. A sentry walk leads into the steep and narrow streets, passageways and stairways. At times, the streets run beneath the carefully-restored houses that now serve as smart boutiques or artist's studios.

Following your visit, re-board your coach for the drive to the Nice airport.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking, at times on hills and cobblestone streets, and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, walking shoes and bring sun protection. This tour is recommended only for guests with flights after 15:00.
