The Comores archipelago lies at the entrance to the Mozambique Channel, some 300 miles north of the tip of Madagascar and about the same distance from the East African coast. Geographically, the Comores comprise four islands: Grande Comore, Anjouan, Moheli and Mayotte. Politically, the first three are part of the Federal and Islamic Republic of the Comoros having declared their independence from France in 1975, while Mayotte chose to remain French as a Collectivité Territoriale. Depart the pier with your local English speaking guide to discover the beauty of the South Eastern coast of Mayotte.
Your first stop is Musical Beach and includes a visit to the biggest Baobab tree on the island located along Bambo Islet.
The majestic baobab tree is an icon of the African continent and lies at the heart of many traditional African remedies and folklore. Native to the African savannah where the climate is extremely dry and arid, it is a symbol of life and positivity in a landscape where little else can thrive. Over time, the Baobab has adapted to its environment. It is a succulent, which means that during the rainy season it absorbs and stores water in its vast trunk, enabling it to produce a nutrient-dense fruit in the dry season when all around is dry and arid. This is how it became known as "The Tree of Life".
Next, drive across the Choungui Pass and enjoy a view of the volcanic mountain named Choungui Peak, one of 11 peaks on Mayotte and ranked the second highest on the island measuring 1,946 feet (593 metres). The highest peak is Mont Bénara however only visible from far out at sea.
Re-board your vehicle and depart for a photo stop at Tahiti Beach to admire the beautiful landscape. Tahiti beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mayotte with its clear water and sand and location away from noise.
Your next stop will take you inland through lush and green scenery en-route for the Botanical Gardens where you will enjoy local fresh fruit juice and fruits in a beautiful garden setting with scents of spices of the island. Enjoy a folkloric performance by the local women called "Boueni" in their local language. Guests may also stroll the gardens at their own discretion.
At the conclusion of the performance, re-board your vehicle for the approximate 45 minute drive back to the pier in Mamoudzou.
Please Note: This tour requires a minimal amount of activity for approximately 30 to 50 meters (98 to 165 feet) with optional walking within the Botanical Gardens. Guests must be able to get in/out of the vehicle with minimal assistance. This tour is not suitable for guests who are confined to a wheelchair as there are no accessible vehicles on the island. Guest with limited mobility must be assisted by their travel companion. Guests should bring water from the ship as the temperature on the island is quite hot.
