Silversea Luxury Cruises A Mainapilgino Village

Meynypilgyno is a modern Chukchi fishing village of some 420 inhabitants set on a long spit of land. The village lies slightly upriver and can only be reached by entering a narrow river mouth before arriving at the calm waters inside. Sometimes hundreds of walrus haul out on the sand spit here. Beluga whales, grey whales and Largha seals are commonly spotted near the mouth of the river. A village was established here in 1957 for the formerly nomadic people of the area. View more

Their community is nestled in the tundra with a dramatic mountain range as its backdrop. The village’s surroundings are considered to be the world’s most important site for critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpipers. Chukchi hospitality dictates that visitors are welcomed with traditional dances and the sharing of local history and culture.
