Buried City

As you drive from little Bay through Brades and on to Salem, experience the continually changing face of the villages as the local population continues to carry out construction in the desire to reclaim their country.

First stop is Runaway Ghaut. Local lore has it that a sip from the Natural Spring there will ensure your return to Montserrat.

Then start off your Buried City tour with a stop at the ruins of the Montserrat Springs Hotel. There you will get a birds eye view of the Buried City.

Next stop is the Buried City itself. Stand on what was once the Deep Water Harbour and behold what is now the tallest mountain of Montserrat where the schools, business, homes and churches once stood.

Be sure to bring your camera.

Woodlands Beach

In the second part of your excursion, relax at Woodlands Beach where you can take a dip in the sea or just hang out and enjoy a local meal with a glass of the famous rum punch listening some Caribbean music.

Browse the souvenirs stand and take home a little bit of Montserrat with you.

Please note: this tour involves a minimum amount of walking for about 300 yards (280 meters) and some steps at Montserrat Springs Hotel and to get on/off the bus. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable shoes and beach clothes under a cover up and bring a towel from the ship for those willing to swim.

Coastal Boat Tour

Take a lazy boat ride along the shore and see the Buried City from a different vantage point. Sail past Plymouth and then on to what was the village of St. Patricks, now nothing more than volcanic rubble.

Captain Buffy will stop and allow you to capture the power of Mother Nature on your camera as you view the huge deltas that the volcano created along the coast line adding many square miles to the island of Montserrat.

Please note: the boat is a 6 seats uncovered fishing boat and space is limited. This tour involves a minimum amount of walking and it is suitable for guests with limited mobility provided they can climb few steps to get on/off the boat.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory and Botanical Gardens

In July 1995, Montserrat's Soufrière Hills volcano erupted after being asleep for hundreds of years, burying Plymouth, the island's capital. Over 39 feet of mud and ash devastated the southern part of the island. The area was evacuated, and even now, police permission must be received before anyone can enter the exclusion zone where the volcanic activity occurred.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Montserrat Volcano Observatory tracks the activity of the volcano. Your visit here will allow you to have a close up experience of what life with an active volcano is like. Watch the Observatory's 25 minute video telling the complete story of the eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano and its consequences. If a resident scientist or staff is available you may get answers to all your volcanic questions.

Catch a glimpse of the Buried City from the viewing platform and make sure to get your volcanic souvenir from the gift shop before you leave.

Montserrat National Trust

At the National Trust take a guided tour of the Amerindian Garden. The Trust develop a project for a botanic garden with the purpose of enhancing public knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the Montserrat Environment through a variety of educational experiences. The ravages of the volcano left few green common spaces in which people could relax and the pressure to clear land of plants to set up buildings for commercial and domestic purposes made it important to educate the public about the importance of plants and the need to conserve them.

At the Welcome Centre you can enjoy a complimentary hot drink or juice and enjoy volcanic stories from your host David. At the Museum you can take a Virtual walk through the Buried City before it was buried. Browse through the Museum exhibits as you wait your turn and then take an easy 10 minute stroll back to Port Little Bay.
