Coastal Boat Tour

Experience the 'Buried City' from a unique perspective during this panoramic coastal boating excursion.

Little Bay, Boat-Ride, Montserrat, Soufriere Hills Volcano, Plymouth City Ruins

Depart the pier for a leisurely boat-ride along the shore, and see the 'Buried City' of Plymouth from a different vantage point. Plymouth was the capital city Montserrat, and, for centuries, the only port of entry to the island. Constructed on historical lava deposits near the then-inactive Soufriere Hills Volcano, the town was evacuated when the volcano resumed erupting in 1995. Plymouth was abandoned permanently in 1997 after it was burnt, and mostly-buried, by a series of pyroclastic flows and lahars, or destructive mudflows, on the slopes of the volcano.

Coastal Villas, St. Patrick's Village Ruins, Huge Deltas, Expanded Beaches

After passing by Plymouth, see luxurious coastal villas en route to the village of St. Patrick's, now nothing more than volcanic rubble. You can ask Captain Buffy to stop and allow you to capture the power of Mother Nature on your camera. View the huge, newly-formed deltas and expanded beaches that the volcano created along the coastline, adding many square miles/kilometres to the island. Your coastal boat-ride concludes back at the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of activity, and a few steps to negotiate to embark/disembark the boat. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with neck and/or back problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests prone to seasickness, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking or boat shoes, and bring sun protection, and a towel from the ship. Guests must be at least ten years old to participate on this tour. An open 6-seats fishing boat is utilised on this tour; and the seas may be choppy. Advise the captain if the boat is going too fast. Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, fish and marine life sightings are not guaranteed. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. A signed waiver is required to participate on this tour. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory and Botanical Gardens

In July 1995, Montserrat's Soufrière Hills volcano erupted after being asleep for hundreds of years, burying Plymouth, the island's capital. Over 39 feet of mud and ash devastated the southern part of the island. The area was evacuated, and even now, police permission must be received before anyone can enter the exclusion zone where the volcanic activity occurred.

Montserrat Volcano Observatory

Montserrat Volcano Observatory tracks the activity of the volcano. Your visit here will allow you to have a close up experience of what life with an active volcano is like. Watch the Observatory's 25 minute video telling the complete story of the eruption of the Soufriere Hills Volcano and its consequences. If a resident scientist or staff is available you may get answers to all your volcanic questions.

Catch a glimpse of the Buried City from the viewing platform and make sure to get your volcanic souvenir from the gift shop before you leave.

Montserrat National Trust

At the National Trust take a guided tour of the Amerindian Garden. The Trust develop a project for a botanic garden with the purpose of enhancing public knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the Montserrat Environment through a variety of educational experiences. The ravages of the volcano left few green common spaces in which people could relax and the pressure to clear land of plants to set up buildings for commercial and domestic purposes made it important to educate the public about the importance of plants and the need to conserve them.

At the Welcome Centre you can enjoy a complimentary hot drink or juice and enjoy volcanic stories from your host David. At the Museum you can take a Virtual walk through the Buried City before it was buried. Browse through the Museum exhibits as you wait your turn and then take an easy 10 minute stroll back to Port Little Bay.

Please note: this tour involves a minimum amount of walking and a total of about 30 steps to climb at the venues visited. It is suitable for guests with limited mobility but not for guests utilizing a wheelchair.
