Laayoune is the largest city, and capital, of Western Sahara. It has a population of about 200,000, which is more than half the population of the territory. It is literally a city in the middle of the desert, about 10 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, with nothing else around it for a thousand miles. The name means "the water springs" or “water source”.
