La Rochelle has an interesting history, as you would expect of a port that was one of France’s foremost seaports from the 14th to 17th centuries. Eleanor of Aquitaine gave it a charter in 1199, which released its feudal obligations and set the basis for becoming a center of major trading and commerce.
