Silversea Luxury Cruises A La Pallice (La Rochelle)

La Pallice (La Rochelle)

La Rochelle has an interesting history, as you would expect of a port that was one of France’s foremost seaports from the 14th to 17th centuries. Eleanor of Aquitaine gave it a charter in 1199, which released its feudal obligations and set the basis for becoming a center of major trading and commerce. It was the ship owners of La Rochelle who were among the first to establish trade links with the New World. Following the Wars of Religion, the city turned Protestant. View more

However, because of its strategic importance, it drew the remorseless enmity of Cardinal Richelieu, who laid siege to the port in 1627, sealing the harbor approaches with a dike. The English dispatched the Duke of Buckingham to La Rochelle’s aid, but to no avail. After 15 months of resistance, the city surrendered when all but 5,000 of its 28,000 residents had died of starvation. Richelieu ordered the walls to be demolished and the city’s privileges revoked. During World War II, La Rochelle once again suffered devastation when Allied Forces repeatedly bombed the city because of a German submarine base that was located here. Today La Rochelle is centered around the old port and appears as a laidback but lively city that is very popular with tourists during the months of July and August. Although itself without beaches, stretches of fine sand can be found at the nearby Ile de Ré.
