Silversea Luxury Cruises A Igoumenitza

Igoumenitza

An old Greek legend says that when God created the world, He sifted all the soil onto the earth through a strainer. After every country had good soil, He tossed the stones left in the strainer over his shoulder and created Greece. Whether you prefer this version of events or the more scientific version, there is no denying that legend is rife, wherever you travel in Greece.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 80-minute drive to Metsovo. One of the most picturesque and traditional villages in Greece, Metsovo was built amphitheatrically on one of the highest peaks of Pindos Mountain around 1380. Formerly occupied by the Turks during the Ottoman Empire, Metsovo was liberated by the Greek Army in 1912. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of the village. Your first stop is at the Metsovo Folk Art Museum. Founded in 1955 and one of Baron Michael Tositsa's Foundations, the museum is housed in the renovated manor house of the Tositsa family, famous benefactors of Metsovo, which was originally built in 1661.

Metsovo Folk Art Museum Tour

During your guided tour of the interior rooms, stables, warehouses and large parlours of this old mansion-turned-museum, view a wealth of valuable artefacts. Included are collections of firearms and swords from the struggle of 1821 against the Ottoman occupation, copper and wooden kitchen utensils, jewellery, traditional dresses, decorative plates and silverware, saddles embroidered with gold, chests, agricultural tools, and looms and woven fabrics. The museum also features a major collection of 66 icons dating from the 15th century to the early-20th century, as well as a collection of Byzantine metal items dating from early-Christian times to the late-Byzantine period. In 1991, the museum's third floor was dedicated to Evangelos Averoff, and features personal items and photographs from his life.

Averoff Winery Tour and Tasting

Next, re-board your coach and head to the Averoff Winery, one of the most famous wineries in Greece.

Katogi Averoff came to life in the late-1950s, when Evangelos Averoff planted Greece's first Cabernet Sauvignon vines on the precipitous slopes of Mount Pindus, and bottled the wine now known as Katogi Averoff in the katogi, or 'lower storey', of his home in Metsovo. Averoff's wine-making activities on Pindus' abandoned slopes revived a viticultural tradition which had flourished during the 18th and 19th centuries. During your guided tour, learn about the history of the winery and its award-winning wines, then proceed for a tasting of wines produced at the estate. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 80-minute drive back to the pier.

Nekromanteio & Parga

Explore Greece's coastal beauty and ancient connection to the afterlife during this scenic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Nekromanteio and Archaeological Site

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 50-minute drive to the ancient city of Nekromanteio. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of the archaeological site of Nekromanteio (the Oracle of the Dead), which is located at the mouth of the River Acheron. It dates back from the 4th-century B.C. to 3rd-century B.C., and was the only oracle of its kind in ancient Greece. Ancient settlers believed that the river led directly to the underworld, the gates of Hades, and that the dead needed to cross it to arrive at their final resting place. The ancient site of the Oracle came to light during excavations conducted in 1958. Ironically, it was discovered beneath a Christian graveyard and the monastery of St. John, apparently built above it in the 18th century.

Parga, Castle of Parga, Castle Walls and Free Time

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to Parga. Located on the Ionian coast between the cities of Preveza and Igoumenitsa, Parga is a resort town known for its scenic beauty, exquisite beaches and Castle of Parga, which is perched on a hill overlooking the town. Upon arrival, a refreshment stop is made, followed by some free time at your leisure around the castle walls. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 50-minute drive back to the pier.

Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.

Ioannina History & Jewish Heritage

Embrace the history of Ioannina and its Jewish heritage during a memorable, half-day excursion to this ancient city.

Ioannina, Old Town and Wax Museum

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to the ancient city of Ioannina. The largest city in Epirus, north-western Greece, Ioannina lies on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis at an elevation of approximately 1,640 feet (about 500 metres) above sea level. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of the Old Town, then continue on-foot to the Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue, or 'Old Synagogue'.

Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue

The Kahal Kadosh Yashan Synagogue is located inside the walled Castro, near the Big Gate. The original structure likely dates to the Byzantine period. It is not clear whether it was constructed on the site of an earlier synagogue, or if it is the first official house of worship of the Ioannina Jews. A tall, stone wall encloses the synagogue and its property. Although the synagogue has been restored twice, in 1881 and in 1987, the building still retains its original character. While the Old Synagogue survived German occupation during World War II, the New Synagogue did not. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of the synagogue's interior, which includes a series of plaques inscribed with the names of those Ioannina Jews lost in the Holocaust.

Pavlos Vrellis Museum of Wax Effigies

Your last stop is at the Pavlos Vrellis Museum of Wax Effigies. Established by the sculptor Pavlos Vrellis in February 1983, it is the best-known wax museum in Greece. The museum displays 150 life-size wax models in 37 themes, inspired by various events from Greek history dating from 500 B.C. to present-day. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Remarkable Monasteries of Meteora

Experience the spectacular monasteries of Meteora during a panoramic, full-day excursion to this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Meteora, Huge Granite Rocks and Monasteries

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 2.75-hour drive east, through inland mountains and past beautiful scenery and several villages to Meteora, with a comfort stop en route. The unforgettable UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora consists of huge granite rocks towering high above the plain, with most of them crowned by monasteries built 600 years ago.

St. Stefanos Monastery

Here on these pinnacles of rock, medieval monks took refuge from plundering bandits, and their communities were formed on the lines of the Holy Mountain of Athos. Of the original 24 monasteries, only six are now inhabited, two of which have become nunneries against the express commands of the early foundations. Your first visit is to the St. Stefanos Monastery, which is now run by an order of nuns and relatively easy to negotiate.

Varlaam Monastery, Pindus Mountains and Lunch

Next, re-board your coach and head to the Varlaam Monastery. Upon arrival, walk up the 50 steps to access this spectacular compound. The monastic buildings are of considerable interest, and the view over the other monasteries towards the lofty Pindus Mountains in the distance is breath-taking. Following your visit, proceed for a Greek lunch at the Vakhos restaurant. After lunch, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 2.75-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 547 yards (about 500 metres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 50 steps at the Varlaam Monastery. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
