Hvar
Hvar

The Croatian island of Hvar bills itself as the "sunniest island in the Adriatic." Not only does it have the figures to back up this claim—an annual average of 2,724 hours of sunshine—but it also makes visitors a sporting proposition, offering them a money-back guarantee if there are seven consecutive days of snow (snow has been known to fall here; the last time being February 2012).

Split & Diocletian Palace by Rib-Boat

Experience a unique look at life in Split and the Diocletian Palace throughout the centuries during this memorable, full-day sightseeing excursion via rib-boat and on foot. Today`s Split is the product of 17 centuries of building, renovating and remodeling so that the new of today meshes with the old of yesterday. At the core of this sprawling cityscape is the palace that Emperor Diocletian built for his golden years at the turn of the 4th century.

Cruise to Split and Diocletian Palace

Depart Hvar aboard an inflatable rib-boat for the scenic cruise to Split, a unique cityscape comprised of 17 centuries of building, rebuilding and remodeling. En route, pass by the southern coastline of Hvar and the Brac Islands. Upon arrival in the Old Town of Split, proceed to the Diocletian Palace. The core of this sprawling cityscape, the palace was built at the turn of the 4th century. What began as an imperial residence and fortified camp is today an intriguing warren of narrow cobblestone streets, where pre-Romanesque churches stand alongside Gothic chapels, history-filled museums abut galleries of contemporary art, and restaurants compete with bustling cafes for the attention of passers-by.

Cellars and Ethnographical Museum

Your guided walking tour of Split begins with a stroll through the very well-preserved cellars, which offer a unique insight into how life in the Palace was organized. From here, continue on to the Ethnographical Museum, which is actually situated in the Emperor's apartment in the very heart of Diocletian Palace. This interesting museum combines a beautiful medieval house with imperial rooms, houses a valuable collection of clothes, dresses and gowns, and offers a unique insight into life in Split throughout the centuries.

The piazza connects the older part of town to the newer southern side, which was developed from the 15th century onwards. During your guided walking tour, proceed along the promenade and up to the 16th-century Renaissance Cathedral. Your walking tour continues on to the dock, where sailboats and fishing boats bob and sway in the evening breeze. Next, a visit is made to the very heart of the port to see the large Arsenal, which features a striking arched portal and houses Europe's first community theatre, established in 1612.

Franciscan Monastery

Your final stop is at the 15th-century Franciscan Monastery. Upon arrival, visit the impressive Renaissance Cloister, the old refectory housing a collection of lace, manuscripts and books, and the church, which is home to a remarkable collection of paintings. Your tour of the monastery concludes in the garden, where a local group of male singers serenade you a cappella. A refreshing drink and dried figs are served prior to the beginning of the concert.
