The city’s origin name was Dog River, but one pioneering settler, Mary Coe, succeeded in getting the name changed to Hood River. Although name Hood River appears on maps as early as 1856, the city was not incorporated until 1895. Traditionally, the region’s economy has been based on agriculture, tourism, and sports recreation. The area is well known for its pear orchards and wineries. Since the late 1990s, high-tech industries, such as aerospace engineering have moved into the region.
