Silversea Luxury Cruises A HEIMAEY (Westman Islands)

HEIMAEY (Westman Islands)

It’s hard to imagine, as you stroll Heimaey’s idyllic streets of white wooden houses, that this island was literally torn apart by a spectacular volcanic eruption, just over 40 years ago. The fact that you can visit incredible Heimaey at all is something of a miracle – because the oozing lava of the Eldfell volcano threatened to seal the harbour off completely. Fortunately, its advance was halted by gallons of seawater, pumped onto it by the plucky islanders, who saved their fishing industry in the process. View more

Iceland's famous for its scenery, and the huge castles of volcanic rock that rise out of the sea's waves here are some of the country's most dramatic.

Excursiones en HEIMAEY (Westman Islands)

Caves and Islands RIB-Boat Safari

Experience the caves, islets and rock formations of the Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago in an exciting new way during this panoramic, fun-filled RIB-boat excursion.

Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago, Surtsey Island, Helgafell and Eldfell Volcanoes

Depart the pier for the short walk to your awaiting rigid-inflatable boat. Upon arrival, receive your safety and riding instructions, then don your flotation suits and life vests before setting out on your RIB-boat safari.

Fast, fun and agile RIB safari boats have opened up new and exciting travel possibilities, especially here in the Vestamannaeyjar (Western Islands), where boats sail from Heimey Island on exploratory journeys of mysterious caves and small islets. Vestmannaeyjar is an archipelago off Iceland's south coast, and was formed by underwater volcanic eruptions. The youngest island, Surtsey, was formed in 1963. Heimaey is the largest and only inhabited island. It has two volcanoes, Helgafell and Eldfell.

RIB-Boat Safari, Caves, Islets, Rock Formations, Eider Duck Cave, Cliff Cave

The Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago is renowned for its diverse birdlife and interesting geological history. Your RIB-boat rides past caves, islets and unusual rock formations that have been shaped by the interplay of the sea and volcanic activity. Your RIB boat also ventures into some smaller caves, such as the Eider Duck Cave, whose name derives from a nearby eider duck colony. Next, visit a huge and extremely deep cave, where beautiful basalt columns decorate the walls. The cave was named after the terrifying Norse God of the Sea, Ægir. Close by is a small cave where the sunlight shines through, creating a mesmerising interplay of light and water. A final visit is made to the roomy Klettahellir (Cliff Cave), which has excellent acoustics.

Marine Life, Seabirds

Whales, orcas, dolphins and porpoises are occasionally sighted on this tour. Seals are frequently seen, as well as seabirds that include cormorants, fulmats, gannets and Atlantic puffins. At the conclusion of your RIB-boat safari, commence the short ride back to the pier and return to the ship on-foot.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of activity, and a moderate amount of walking for approximately 765 yards (about 700 metres). This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guest with neck and/or back problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers and a waterproof jacket and pants with sturdy, flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection from the ship. A life vest and flotation suit is provided. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour. The weight of each participating guest must not exceed 264 pounds (about 120 kilograms). Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, marine life sightings are not guaranteed. A signed waiver is required to participate on this tour. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Westman Island Walking Tour

Explore the volcanic history of Iceland on-foot during this scenic walking tour of Heimaey.

Heimaey and Volcanoes

Depart the pier for a guided walking tour of Heimaey. Your tour begins with a look at the 5,000-year-old Helgafell Volcano, whose eruption on January 23, 1973 created a new volcano, Eldfell. See the grassy hills of Eldfell and the fences put in place there to hold down the ashes. This area was the same height as the houses to the left of it, and considered to be the best farmland on the island. The top of Eldfell is still warm to this day.

Pompeii of the North, Eldheimar Museum

Next, your walk continues on to Pompeii of the North. This area was unearthed in 2004 when islanders began digging out the houses buried in the volcano. The fissure created by the volcano was only 650 feet (200 metres) from Kirkjubær, the easternmost farm on the island. More than 400 houses were destroyed during the eruption, and new houses have since been built on the west coast of the island.

You will get the chance to visit the Eldheimar museum, which focuses on the 1973 volcanic eruption in Vestmannaeyjar, Icelands largest natural disaster - where inhabitants of the island had to evacuate their home in the middle of the night.

Harbour Entrance and Skansinn Church

Before the eruption, the harbor was unprotected from the eastern winds and the entrance was 2,624 feet (800 meters) in width. Today, it is only 525 feet (160 meters) wide, and one of the safest harbors in Iceland. A stop is also made at the Skansinn Church, a former fort built in 1586 and then rebuilt in 1630. Lava destroyed most of the fort; however, ruins of a seawater tank and electricity bollards remain. Your walking tour concludes at the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately two hours over uneven, gravel and grass surfaces, with some uphill walking and steps to negotiate. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilize a wheelchair. Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.
