Silversea Luxury Cruises A Haiphong (Hanoi)

Hanoi, which has been Vietnam's capital several times and is again today, remains a city of academics, artists, diplomats, and contradictions. The self-appointed stronghold of Vietnamese anti-imperialist culture has learned to covet foreign tourist dollars. Originally built around an imperial citadel currently housing the modern military, Hanoi is divided into four main districts, or quan. Hoan Kiem District, named for the lake at its center, is the hub of most tourist activity. Just north of the lake is the Old Quarter, a charming cluster of ancient streets. View more

South of the lake, you'll find the modern city center, once the French Quarter. The northwestern Ba Dinh District includes the zoo, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and the West Lake area. The Hai Ba Trung District to the southeast is a calm, elegant residential area. The Dong Da District, to the southwest, is home to the Temple of Literature. Haunting Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage area 175 km (105 mi) west of Hanoi, is a geological wonderland of limestone pinnacles rising out of the turquoise sea.

Excursiones en Haiphong (Hanoi)

Haiphong Highlights

This teeming port city was built by the French and experienced heavy damage from American bombs during the Vietnam War. Fortunately, many of the colonial buildings, which account for the city's most attractive feature, survived unscathed. In addition, the city boasts old pagodas and temples, creating an interesting mix of East and West.

From the port, begin your discovery with a sightseeing drive heading toward the city centre. Stop for photos at the elegant Municipal Theatre, the cathedral and flower market. A walk through SAT Market offers an opportunity for a look at local trading.

Du Hang Pagoda

Following your visit, continue travelling south of the city and to the site of the Du Hang Pagoda. The original building dates from the 17th century with several remodels over the years. The Pagoda is known for its traditional woodcarvings.

Trang Kenh House

Returning to the city centre, stop at the Trang Kenh Communal House, featuring a collection of intricate wood sculptures and stone carvings. From here, conclude this introduction to Haiphong with a drive back to the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, with a few steps to climb. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility of those who utilise a wheelchair. The order of sights seen or visited may vary.

For an introduction to Vietnam's capital, begin the day with the two and a half hour journey from Haiphong to Hanoi. En route, there is a comfort stop at a well-known handicraft centre.

Hanoi

With its French-colonial style buildings, tree-bordered boulevards, numerous pagodas and scenic lakes, this nearly thousand year old city offers many attractions. With a population of roughly three and a half million, Hanoi is the country's economic, cultural and political centre. Its unique atmosphere derives from a blend of East and West, with beautiful French colonial buildings standing next to traditional houses, historical monuments and revered temples. The city's streets teem with thousands of bicycles, vying for space with cars and buses. Upon arrival, enjoy an orientation drive while heading to Hanoi's main square, which you explore on foot.

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum Area

The huge square is dominated by the monumental shrine containing the embalmed body of the 'Father of the Country'. Opposite stands the impressive former Presidential Palace and one-time residence of the French Governor. There is time for photographs before walking to Ho's garden, located behind the mausoleum. Stroll past tranquil lotus ponds to Ho's cottage, a simple stilt house resembling the style of the ethnic hill tribes. Take a look inside this humble abode, which Ho preferred to living in the palace. Nearby stands the 'One Pillar Pagoda', shrouded in local legends.

Temple Of Literature

Next, drive to this ancient temple complex, a pleasant retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Founded in 1076 during the Ly Dynasty, the temple complex is the site of the country's first university and the pride of the nation. The unique entrance gate and 82 stone steles bear witness to an early high level of education at the time when the country gained independence from Chinese occupation. Walk through walled courtyards with ancient pavilions and enter the ornate main shrine dedicated to Confucius. Leaving the Temple of Literature, head to the Hanoi lunch venue for a local fare mid-day meal.

Fine Arts Museum

After lunch, proceed to Hanoi's Fine Arts Museum, housed in a building that once served as the French Ministry of Information. The structure, while very classical, has oriental touches to the roof and the collections within its two wings range from ancient antiquities to contemporary art. The ground floor of the main wing houses the oldest artefacts. These include the sandstone sculptures of the Champa and Funan kingdoms. Among them is the elegantly carved Amitabha Buddha image, produced in 1057.

36 Street Old Quarter

From the museum, depart for the bustling Old Quarter and discover one of the most exciting parts of Hanoi. Named for the original 36 streets that formed the quarter, this is the busiest part of downtown. In streets named each after a particular trade they once represented, merchants and buyers carry out their daily activities. Today, this is a shopping mecca for visitors and residents alike. Some free time is afforded to browse and perhaps purchase a nice souvenir.

At the appointed time, re-join the coach and begin the journey back to Haiphong and the ship.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking, with many steps to climb. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. We suggest you wear comfortable walking shoes. The order of sites seen or visited may vary. Traffic may cause delays.

Red River Delta

Outside of the bustling port city of Haiphong lie the fertile farmlands of the Red River Delta, dotted with traditional hamlets and villages. Ancient temples and communal houses retain the spiritual heritage of the rural population.

Wood Carvers' Village

Leaving the port, a countryside drive of about 75 minutes brings you to the village of Vinh Bao, famous for its craft of wood carving. Visit one of the workshops and observe skilled craftsmen creating a wide range of articles from wood. Some items are available for purchase, if you desire.

Bao Ha Temple

Next, proceed to this 15th-century temple, dedicated to Linh Lang, patron of the village and the wood carvers. Linh Lang was a prince of the Ly Dynasty, who settled here and founded the village. Step inside the temple and view the unusual statue of Linh Hang - it can be made to stand upright or seated.

In the courtyard of the temple, refreshments are served. Enjoy a taste of typical local snack and green tea.

Traditional Puppet Show

Not far from the temple, you are invited to watch a traditional puppet performance, a popular form of both art and entertainment, which originated in the 12th century. The puppets are handmade of red lacquered wood and decorated with gilded trim. Skillful actors control the puppets behind the stage, accompanied by music and lyrics.

Following the performance, conclude this countryside exploration with the drive back to Haiphong and the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, with few steps. It is not recommended for guests who utilise a wheelchair. Please remember to bring your camera. This tour shows a basic look at the surrounding countryside and includes long drives. The scenery viewed is not at the same level and the tour is not comparable to that of the Mekong Delta tour offered from Ho Chi Minh City .
