Silversea Luxury Cruises A Haines

Unlike most cities of Southeast Alaska, Haines can be reached by road. With a population of 2,200, Haines lies in the upper northern reaches of the Inside Passage and is an important access point to the Yukon Territory and Interior Alaska. While cruising into Haines, see the Lynn Canal, the longest and deepest fjord in North America. Once in town, mountains seem to surround you on all sides while the jagged cathedral peaks of the Chilkat Mountains loom over Fort Seward. Haines has two distinct personalities. View more

On the north side of the Haines Highway is the section of Haines that developed around the Presbyterian mission. After its missionary beginnings, it served as the trailhead for the Jack Dalton Trail into the Yukon during the 1897 gold rush to the Klondike. South of the highway, the town resembles a military post, which is exactly what it was for nearly half a century. In 1903 the U.S. Army established Fort William Henry Seward at Portage Cove just south of town. The post (renamed Chilkoot Barracks in 1922) was the only military base in the territory until World War II. In 1939, the army built the Alaska Highway and the Haines Highway to connect Alaska with the other states. Today, the community of Haines is recognized for the Native American dance and culture center at Fort Seward as well as for its superb fishing, camping and outdoor recreation.

Excursiones en Haines

Chilkoot Lake Wildlife Quest

Haines is home to magnificent wildlife and breathtaking views of the natural world. With an experienced naturalist as your guide, see and learn about the plants and animals that make up the ‘wilds’ of Alaska. Please remember to bring your camera.

Chilkoot Valley
From town, journey through the Chilkoot Valley. Situated amongst rugged glaciated peaks, it is home to brown bears, mountain goats, salmon, river otters, and innumerable bald eagles. Local and migratory birds such as marbled murrelets, loons, surf scoters, and harlequin ducks, make for a birdwatchers paradise. Powerful spotting scopes or binoculars allow close-range views of mountain goats grazing in high alpine meadows, bears feasting on salmon, and nesting eagles.

Fjord and Rainforest Wildlife-Spotting
Take in the coastal views along the longest fjord in North America. Keep an eye out for the seals, sea lions, porpoise and whales that feed in these rich waters. During a refreshing walk in the temperate rainforest, listen as your guide illustrates the vitality of the giant trees and surrounding ecosystem. Enjoy a locally caught and smoked salmon snack before returning to the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking; however, guests must be able to embark/disembark the touring vehicle via steps. It is not suitable for those who utilise a wheelchair. The tour can vary slightly according to maximum wildlife viewing potential. Guests must be a minimum of 8 years of age and sign a waiver to participate. Bear and other wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

Glacier Fjord Bicycle Adventure

Cycle along an ocean inlet, salmon-filled river, and view a glacial lake all from the seat of your bicycle. This ride offers a scenic and memorable outdoor adventure into one of the more picturesque areas of Haines.

Lutak Inlet

A short van ride takes you to the shore of Lutak Inlet to begin your ride. After gearing-up and listening to a safety and trail orientation briefing, mount your bike to begin exploring. The paved road parallels the protected waters of Chilkoot and Lutak Inlet. Pullouts along the road offer views of Haines and overlooks for wildlife viewing. Lutak Inlet is narrower and more sheltered than Lynn Canal, making it easier to spot river otters, Steller sea lions and harbor seals. A few humpback whales swim into the inlets as well, especially in May and June. Harbor porpoises, Alaska's smallest cetaceans, are often seen in Lutak Inlet in the summer. Look and listen for belted kingfishers, common loons, harlequin ducks, surf scoters, pigeon guillemots, boreal owls, and bald eagles.

Cycling Expedition

During your nine-mile (14.5-kilometre), round-trip cycling expedition, take in the gorgeous views across the emerald lake and inlet surrounded by glaciers, waterfalls, and jagged mountain peaks rising thousands of feet, straight out of the water. If you wish, leave your bike for an short trek, offering a more up-close look at your surroundings. This is a great tour to get some mild exercise and breathe some pure Alaskan air. Your professional bike guide offers details about the local history, culture, and living in Alaska and answers your questions en route.

At the conclusion of your approximately two-hour adventure, re-board the van and return to pier.

Please note: This tour requires peddling a bicycle with handbrakes for approximately 9 miles (14.5 kilometres) on flat and paved road and walking for approximately 0.5 miles (800 m) on trails, at times over uneven and muddy surfaces. This tour is recommended only to guests who are physically fit and can ride a bike and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair and for guests suffering from arthritis of hands. Dress warmly in layers and wear closed-toe shoes; rain gear, mandatory helmets, and gloves are provided. Guests must be at least 10 years of age, reach a height of 4'6" (137 cm), and be below 250lb (113 kg) of weight. A signed waiver is required to participate. Space is limited.

Glacier Point Wilderness Safari

The Davidson glacier is one of the geological highlights of the Skagway-Haines area. See the face of this sprawling glacier as you journey by wildlife viewing boat and canoe through deep fjords and rain forest, dotted by colourful wildflowers and surrounded by immense mountains.

Boat Cruise

From the pier, board a wildlife viewing boat for the cruise along Alaska's deepest fjord. During your 40-minute ride, keep an eye out for whales and sea lions en route to Glacier Point.

Upon arrival, transfer to a safari bus for a narrated ride to the trailhead, to begin a 20-minute walk over the moraine towards Davidson Lake. As you approach your destination, the forest suddenly opens to a breath taking view of the glacier, across a lake.

Canoe Adventure

At the shore of the lake, board a 31-foot (9.4-metre) canoe for a 1-1.5-hour journey of discovery to the face of the mighty Davidson Glacier. Paddle and motor across the lake and around the ice and shoreline. Throughout the canoe voyage, your guide shares his knowledge of this incredible landscape. The glacier provides a wonderful backdrop for any photographs.

At the conclusion of your paddling adventure, hike back to the awaiting safari bus and enjoy lunch at Glacier Point before the return boat ride to Skagway. Your outing concludes with the drive back to Silver Shadow.

Please note: This tour requires a extensive amount of walking up to 3 miles, some of which is over uneven terrain. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. It is not recommended for women who are pregnant past 20 weeks. The transfer to Glacier Point via catamaran is not exclusive to Silversea guests. Paddling is not strenuous and is shared by up to 10 guests per canoe. Dress warmly in layers, wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes and bring an extra pair of socks. Rubber boots, life vest and rain gear are provided. Guests must sign a waiver to participate. Guests must be at least 7 years old or 50 pounds (22.7 kilos) in order to participate. Participation is extremely limited.

Haines Thru a Lens

See Alaska through the eyes of a professional photographer and through the lens of your camera on this photography tour.

Cradled at the base of the Chilkat Peninsula, flanked by the Lynn Fjord and Chilkat River, Haines is filled with natural wonders. Your expert photographer guide will acquaint you with the best of the Chilkat Valley's unique attractions. Depending on lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley boast specific photographic highlights. Your professional photographer guide will have previously scouted out the best areas for the day's photo shoot. May, June, and July feature wildflowers and bald eagles. In August and September, brown bear are often feeding on pink salmon in the Chilkoot River.

Chilkoot Lake State Park

Begin your tour with a seaside drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park is renowned for its turquoise lake surrounded by snow-capped mountains, important Tlingit cultural sites, and a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea. Keep an eye out for wildlife; migratory birds, brown bear, and harbour seals are often seen here.

Letnikof Cannery Cove

Your exploration continues as you venture out of town and south along the mouth of the Chilkat River en route to the picturesque salmon cannery at Letnikof Cove. The Rainbow Glacier provides a stunning backdrop to the weathered red buildings of the historic cannery.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking to reach the best vantage points, some of which is over uneven or unpaved terrain. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. This tour is designed with an emphasis on photography and is led by a local professional photographer. Participants must provide all photographic equipment; experience in photography is not necessary. Dress in layers, bring rain gear and a day pack to protect your equipment, and wear sturdy footwear. Ponchos and tripods can be provided if required. Capturing wildlife images is one of the goals but cannot be guaranteed.

Kroschel Wildlife Center

View orphaned animals relocated from the Alaskan wild to a man-made habitat as they learn to trust their human neighbours. See these creatures up-close on this half-day visit to an animal sanctuary.

Board the coach at the pier and travel for approximately 1-hour through the Bald Eagle Preserve. Along the way, your guide will acquaint you with the Native and natural history of the Chilkat Valley before you reach your destination, the Kroschel Films Wildlife Centre.

Kroschel Films Wildlife Centre

Arriving at Kroschel Films Wildlife Centre, you are greeted by owner Steve Kroschel, esteemed filmmaker and founder of this interactive center. Steve has a lifetime of experience working with wild animals for movies such as Never Cry Wolf and the PBS "Wild America" series. The Kroschel Wildlife Center provides a home for orphaned and rescued wild animals, including a Kodiak bear, moose, wolves, Arctic fox, lynx, porcupine, pine marten, mink, reindeer and wolverine. The animals live in the nature but still in their fenced enclosures, that allow you to get up-close for photographs. Don't miss this opportunity to view, touch and feel animals that you may never see in your lifetime and be entertained by Steve Kroschel, the real Alaska "Dr. Doolittle".

After approximately two hours and the Centre, re-board the tour bus for the 1-hour return journey to Haines and the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking to view all the animal enclosures, some of which involves a gradual incline. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in layers.
