Great Keppel Island is the largest island in the Keppel Island Group in the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, southeast of Yeppoon. Geologically, this island used to be part of the Australian mainland until about 5 million years ago, but was isolated when the sea level rose and flooded the mainland.
