Silversea Luxury Cruises A Gozo

Gozo

Malta is situated approximately 58 miles (about 93 kilometres) south of Sicily, and approximately 179 miles (about 288 kilometres) north of Africa. The Maltese Archipelago lies at the centre of the Mediterranean. Gozo, the ‘Isle of Calypso’, is a unique island that forms a part of the Maltese Archipelago, and is famous for its mythical legends, folklore and crafts. Some parts of Gozo are still undiscovered and unspoilt. View more

The southern part of the island facing Malta is low-lying, but it rises near the coast and forms the vertical cliffs of Ta’ Cenc that jut out like a bastion into the sea. Several narrow valleys cut through and dissect the plateau; the best-known being Xlendi.

Sculpture Gallery

The final stop on your tour will be at the Joe Xuereb Sculpture Gallery. The art of Joe Xuereb is inextricably linked with the prehistoric past of Gozo, a unique small island dating from Neolithic times. Joe's medium, the soft globigerina limestone of Gozo, is highly-adapted to his working technique. He utilises traditional tools inherited from his father, a traditional stone mason in his younger days.

Joe's reputation and work extends far beyond Malta. For the past two decades, his art has been featured in print, television specials and galleries throughout the world. Today, Joe runs his own sculpture gallery, which has already been visited by clients from over 70 countries. His works can also be found in private collections in Germany, France, Holland, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, and the United States.

Highlights of Gozo

Explore the archaeology, history and landscapes of Gozo during this scenic, half-day tour of its most sought-after attractions.

Depart the pier for the brief drive to the Xaghra, and a visit to the prehistoric Ggantija Temples.

Ggantija Temples

Known as the 'Giant's Tower', the Ggantija Temples were erected about 3500 B.C. They are thought to be the most impressive monuments of European pre-history, and among the earliest freestanding stone monuments in the world. In spite of their age, the temples have survived remarkably well; in some places, their walls reach a height of approximately 23 feet (7 metres). The southern temple had part of its wall removed to enable the northern temple to be built up against it.

Victoria

Next, your drive continues on to Victoria, the capital of Gozo. Victoria is not just the geographic heart of Gozo; it is also the centre of its everyday activity. Upon arrival, browse through the narrow, winding streets and main market square It-Tokk, which features fresh produce, cheeses, wines, antiques, craft goods, fishing nets, and knitwear. From here, a visit is made to the Citadel of Gozo. The citadel owes its roots to the late-Medieval Era, but the hill has been settled since Neolithic times.

Dwejra and Azure Window

Your tour concludes with a visit to Dwejra. An outstanding example of the geological process,Dwejra is home to curious rock formations and spilling seas. Upon arrival at this magical attraction, see its Inland Sea, Azure Window and Fungus Rock. The rock is locally-known as 'Il-Gebla tal-General', or General's Rock. A special plant with medicinal and healing properties once grew on Fungus Rock.
