Ganges is a small village at the end of the harbour on the eastern shores of Salt Spring Island. They were mostly British immigrants (English, Scottish, and Irish) but also included American slaves who had purchased their freedom, Hawaiians who had worked with the Hudson Bay Company and others from America, Australia and Europe who had been attracted to Canada as part of the gold rush. Prior to this, first nation’s people used the island for seasonal fishing and hunting. Today, it is a multi-cultural community. One of the iconic “must-sees” in Ganges is the ex-Coast Guard buoy "Delta 10" that has been decorated with a marine-themed mural.
