Silversea Luxury Cruises A Galwin'ku, Elcho Island

Galwin'ku, Elcho Island

Part of the Northern Territory and just of the north coast of Arnhem Land, Galiwin’ku Island has been inhabited for more than 40,000 years. Elcho Island (today Galiwin’ku) was chosen as the site for a Methodist mission, but the Methodists encouraged Aboriginal people to stay on their traditional homelands and use the town of Galiwin’ku as a service centre. The community is now the largest Aboriginal community in northeast Arnhem Land. North of the town of Galiwin’ku is the Banthula homeland, part of the Yolngu culture. View more

The northern portion of Elcho Island has been identified as an internationally important site for migratory shorebirds. The Elcho Island group is also a site of national significance to marine turtles as the islands immediately to the north of Elcho are highly significant for nesting olive ridley and flatback turtles, while the seagrass beds attract dugongs.
