Silversea Luxury Cruises A Cristobal

Colon (Spanish for Columbus), with its three modern ports, is one of the Caribbean’s most important shipping terminals. It is connected to Panama City by road, rail, air and, of course, the Panama Canal. The Silver Cloud is scheduled to dock at the neighboring port of Cristóbal, which features extensive facilities for cruise vessels and their passengers. Colon is the second largest city in Panama with a population of just over 200,000. View more

The city was founded in 1850 by Americans working on the Panama railroad and named Aspinwall for one of the railway engineers. Following completion in 1855, Colon gained in importance, which was furthered by the plans for an isthmian canal. During the time of the French canal attempt, a fire in 1885 burned the city nearly to the ground and left thousands of people homeless. Colon was rebuilt in the architectural style then popular in France. Buildings from that era plus the ones constructed by Americans between 1904 and 1914 are still in use today, although the majority are on the verge of collapse. In addition to its importance as a port, Colon boasts the world’s second largest duty-free zone, known as Zona Libre, which is contained in a huge fortress like, walled-off area with giant international stores. However, most of the merchandise is sold in bulk to commercial businesses throughout the country. A top selection of Free Zone shops are located at Cristóbal port, Pier 6, which also features an open market for Panamanian souvenirs, arts and crafts. From Colon or the port of Cristóbal there are a number of worthwhile sights and historical landmarks to see, such as Fort San Lorenzo, the former Panama Canal Zone, Fort Sherman and the Chagres River. Caution: Most of Colon has lower income housing and a high unemployment rate, which makes it a high crime area. Therefore, guests are strongly advised not to venture into the city, except when utilizing the taxi service monitored by the pier operators. Please Note: Guests participating in Silversea’s Post-Cruise Program may check with the Hospitality Desk at the Miramar Intercontinental Hotel for information on sightseeing, shopping and dining opportunities during their stay in Panama City. The driving time from the port of Cristóbal to Panama City is 1.5 hours. Pier Information The ship is scheduled to dock at Cristóbal Cruise Terminal, Pier 6. Major tourist facilities are available in the port area and the Cruise Terminal. The distance from the port to the Colon town center is 0.6 miles. Taxis are generally available at the port. However, guests are strongly advised not to venture into the city as crime is rampant. Shopping Pier 6 has a number of Free Zone stores offering goods at duty-free prices. There is an open market for local souvenirs, arts and crafts. Postcards and stamps are also available. The local currency is the Balboa, on par with the U.S. dollar and interchangeable. Panama’s own coins match U.S. coins in size and value. Cuisine If you were thinking of having a meal ashore, the best choice would be at one of the hotels such as the Melia Panama Canal or the restaurant in the Terminal Building. If leaving the port area, this should only be done by taxi from the ship directly to the venue. Other Sites There are no organized shore excursions offered from Cristóbal on the day of disembarkation, except for a transfer tour en route to Panama City. Sights in Panama City Panama City is a thriving center for international banking, business, trade and transportation. It stretches for six miles along the Pacific coast, from the Panama Canal to the ruins of Old Panama. There are a number of museums worth a visit, plus an excursion to the canal’s Miraflores Locks should not be missed.
