Silversea Luxury Cruises A Cassis

Cassis, an old Provencal fishing port, is a popular summer resort that has drawn many famous painters to its sunny bay including Vlaminck, Matisse and Dufy. Famous for its high white cliffs, Cassis lies at the foot of Europe's highest cliff, Cape Canaille (1352 feet, 405 metres). Like so many of Cote d’Azur villages it finds itself today another playground of Europe. The port is lined with chic boutiques, cafes, and restaurants where only fishing boats and markets once were. With a population of just 8,000 this tiny port is enclosed between two natural boundaries - the cliffs of the Cap Canaille to the east and a series of ocean-emptying brooks to the west. Cassis experiences a plethora of sunshine even in winter, a benefit for those still taking paint to canvas here.

Excursiones en Cassis

Le Castellet & Wine Tasting

Experience the unique flavours of Cassis during this scenic visit to the village of Le Castellat, and a tour and tasting at the historic Domaine de Souviou Winery.

Depart the pier for the approximately 45-minute drive to the lovely little village of Le Castellet, which is perched on the top of a charming hill.

Le Castellat

During the approach on the narrow road from La Cadiére-d'Azur, take in splendid vistas of village, vineyards and olive grooves. After a brief stop at the entrance of the village near the walls, proceed to the 'centre' of Le Castellat, which is located atop the village in front of the castle and a sober Romanesque church on a square known as the 'battlefield'.

The village has retained its fortified look, with sections of the ancient ramparts still standing and two village gates, or 'portes'. The cobblestone streets are lined with old and interesting restored houses. The chateau was rebuilt for the last time in the 16h century. After a walking tour through the village, some free time is made available for you to browse the many handicraft shops and some art galleries.

Domaine de Souviou Winery

Next, re-board your coach for the drive to the Domaine de Souviou Winery, whose 1,000-year-old history is denoted by some very old olive trees still standing on the property. The winery is nestled in a well-protected valley by the Sainte Baume Massif. The Souviou area was home to lush vegetation called 'soovi' in Provencal dialect; a nickname the winery has retained to this day.

The first manuscripts relating to the property date back to the 16th century, when the dynasty of the Bonasse was established in the Souviou area. Over ensuing centuries, special terraces known as 'restanques' were built from dry stones, forming a foundation for the area's agriculture. The cultivation of olive trees developed very rapidly, far exceeded local usage and served as a basis for olive oil export to ruling Marseilles dynasties of the day. As the area became renowned for its olive oil, appreciation for local wines soon followed. The property occupies an area of approximately 126 acres (about 51 hectares), including the famous 'caves', or cellars, where the wine is stored.

Your visit concludes in the winery's special tasting room. Upon arrival, sit back, relax and sample some fougasse (local bread made with olives, nuts or rosemary) accompanied by local wines, which are also available for sale.

After the wine-tasting, re-board your coach for the one-hour return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking over steep, cobblestone streets in the village, and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.

Marseille & Aix en Provence

Experience the dynamic bustle of modern Marseille and the historic 'City of Art and Light', Aix en Provence, during a memorable visit to these picturesque locales.

Depart from Cassis along the 'route des la Gineste', which travels high above the sea and offers spectacular vistas of the Mediterranean. En route to Marseille, pass by the imposing 'unité d'habitation' designed by the father of Modernism, Le Corbusier. This was his vision for communal living in the needs and realities of post-war France. Up to 1,600 people live in a single-slab 'vertical village', complete with an internal shopping street halfway up, a recreation ground and children's nursery on the roof.

Next, continue on for a brief photo stop at Anse des Auffes, a tiny picturesque fishing harbour. From here, proceed to the 19th-century Palais Longchamp, designed in part to disguise a water tower.

Marseille

Upon arrival in Marseille, a visit is made to the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde. The present basilica, built in the Romanesque Byzantine style, was erected in the 19th century and is surmounted by a monumental gilded statue of the Blessed Virgin. From the Basilica, take in one of Europe's finest panoramas stretching to the islands of Pomègues and the Château d'If.

Passing by the port of Marseille, travel to the ancient cove of Lacydon, the Old Port. Centuries ago, fleets of galleys lay at anchor; today, it shelters a large number of pleasure and fishing boats. Leaving Marseille, re-board the coach for the drive to Aix en Provence.

Aix en Provence

Aix en Provence is one of France's most graceful and popular cities. Commonly called Aix (pronounced like the letter 'X'), the town owes its atmosphere of sophisticated civility to the harmonious blend of majestic public squares, shaded avenues and beautiful fountains. Aix's most famous son was Paul Cézanne; many of his paintings are based on themes around the city.

Upon arrival, take a walking tour of Aix's historic centre, which features its most interesting sights. See the Mazarin Quarter, an old section designed by the Archbishop Michel Mazarin in the 17th century. The Saint Sauveur Cathedral is noted for its outstanding architectural and artistic features; its design represents every major period from the 5th to the 18th centuries. Aix's social life centres on the shaded Cours Mirabeau. This main boulevard is lined with cafés, bookshops and some of the old hotels, noted for their exquisitely-carved doorways and wrought-iron balconies. At the intersection of Cours Mirabeau and Rue Clemenceau stands a moss-covered fountain that still spouts thermal waters since the time of the Romans.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available to browse the area shops and have lunch on your own before re-boarding the coach for the approximately one-hour return drive to the pier.

Please note: Since much of the Old Town of Aix is closed to vehicular traffic, it must be explored on-foot. Although Aix is flat, this tour requires an extensive amount of walking and many steps to negotiate at the church in Marseille.

Cooking à la Provençal

Spend a day learning the secrets of preparing gourmet Provencal cuisine during this excursion to Provence, and a cooking demonstration by one of the best chefs in the region.

After boarding a mini-trolley train for the transfer from the pier to the coach parking lot, depart for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the picturesque village of La Cadière d'Azur, situated amidst the Bandol vineyards. Upon arrival, a visit is made to a typical Provencal house with four guestrooms surrounded by a beautiful vegetable garden and cherry trees. Local artist Pascal Cessou has tastefully decorated this refined private home with antiques and mural paintings, including trees, flowers, birds, rabbits, chicken, and trompe l'oei bookshelves on the walls.

Renowned local chef René Bérard greets your arrival to his home, and escorts you on a walking tour of the property and manicured surroundings. This Maître Cuisinier de France owns a small hotel-restaurant in the nearby village, which was awarded one star by Michelin for the quality of his cuisine.

Pick fresh herbs from the garden and proceed to the beautiful kitchen, which is decorated with red and white tiles, and a long table for your private cooking class. After donning a toque and an apron, you can assist Chef René in preparing several Provencal recipes, and share in his knowledge and passion for cooking.

Following this unforgettable culinary experience, proceed to the outside terrace for an apéritif (a glass of rosé) accompanied by tapenade and anchoïade, two specialities you have just helped prepare. Next, dine on lunch at the table under the shaded vine arbour (weather permitting) with Chef René. At the conclusion of this excursion, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, with steep streets and steps in the village of Le Castellet, and a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and trolley train. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection is recommended. Guests are provided with an apron and toque. An onsite guide will translate, as Chef Berard is not fluent in English. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
