Alberobello & Apulian Delicacies

Indulge your senses with the splendid Old World beauty and architecture of Southern Italy during this tour of Alberobello. Green olive groves, golden wheat fields and blue skies depict the colors of the countryside.

Depart the pier for the approximately 1.5-hour scenic drive through the beautiful countryside en route to Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that symbolises the region with its charming little whitewashed Trulli houses.

Alberobello

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour through the narrow streets of the town centre admiring the enchanting Trulli with their whitewashed walls and grey pointed roofs, which are the unmistakable symbol of Alberobello. Enjoy the characteristic districts of Monti and Aia Piccola to learn about the ancient architecture of these unique houses with your tour guide and you will hear that the number of Trulli houses rapidly increased during the 17th century as the Counts of Conversano obliged farmers to build temporary houses to avoid tax burdens for themselves. Strange symbols and cute pinnacles on Trulli cone roofs are the main pictures you will see while shopping or reaching the top of Rione Monti hill to visit the Church of Saint Anthony built in the shape of a Trullo in 1926.

Renowned also for its countryside dotted with Trulli shaped farmhouses and very old olive trees; it is worth a visit especially if you wish to experience local cuisine.

Re-board your coach and drive to one of the beautiful country houses nearby for a delicious tasting of local wine and fare.

Masseria

Next, a picturesque Masseria is waiting for you: the location and setting are perfect to taste specialties such as Apulian focaccia (bread) along with some typical wine.

When finished, your coach takes you back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking over cobblestone surfaces, with some steps to negotiate, and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Inclined surfaces and steps must be negotiated to visit all of the souvenir shops, and take in the best views over Alberobello. Tour groups are not permitted inside the church during services on Sundays, church holidays and during weddings. On those days, only outside visits will be offered. Conservative dress is required when visiting sacred sites. Clothing should cover the shoulders and knees; shorts and tank-tops are not permitted. Comfortable, flat walking shoes are recommended as well as a hat and sunscreen. Tour participation is limited; reserve this well in advance to avoid disappointment. Order of sites visited may vary.

Ostuni the White City and the Ancient Tradition of Olive Oil

Experience the splendid, Old World charm and traditions of Ostuni (La Città Bianca), the white city, during this half-day sightseeing excursion with a visit to an olive oil factory.

Ostuni

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 50-minute drive to the hilltop village of Ostuni. Inhabited since the Paleolithic Age, Ostuni was presumably founded by the Messapii, a pre-Roman tribe, and later destroyed by Hannibal during the Punic Wars. Ostuni and its Cathedral were then re-built on their current hilltop location, which overlooks an amazing olive oil plain along the coast. Upon arrival at the parking area, walk to the town centre and begin your guided walking tour of the village.

Ostuni Walking Tour

As you proceed along narrow streets, pass by old arches and stairways, the Cathedral, incredible Baroque-style palaces, whitewashed houses, the remains of 14th-century walls, and charming courtyards with old, single-room apartments that have been converted into little cafés or souvenir shops. The views from Ostuni provide wonderful vistas that abound from all angles, the best of which offer 360-degree panoramas of the surrounding countryside and the Adriatic Sea.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available to explore Ostuni at your leisure, stop at terraces for breathtaking vistas overlooking the sea or simply relax with a cappuccino.

Olive Oil Tasting

Next, re-board your coach for a sightseeing drive through Ostuni's countryside, and pass many old olive trees and farmhouses en route to one of its olive oil factories. These country houses were once akin to self-contained villages, and featured defensive walls or towers, churches, peasant dwellings and small olive oil production facilities. A stop is made at one of the country houses to learn about and observe the olive oil production process, and sample the finished product.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1.5 miles (about 2.4 km), at times over sloping and uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 25 steps in Ostuni and 15 high steps at the olive oil factory. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Proper attire is required to enter the cathedrals and/or sacred sites; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. We recommend lightweight, comfortable clothing and flat walking shoes. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Lecce - The Florence of the South

A quintessentially southern Italian town, bursting with piazzas and palazzi, Lecce's old town centre is a wonderful setting for the strolling visitor. Explore the interesting history and Baroque architecture of the "Florence of the Baroque" during this half-day sightseeing excursion. Supported by a history going back at least 2,500 years, modern-day Lecce is the main town on Puglia's Salento peninsula that has not forgotten her roots with the continued production and sale of olive oil, wine and ceramics.

Scenic Drive to Lecce

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate one-hour drive through the beautiful Apulian countryside to Lecce. Located on the south-eastern tip of Italy's boot, Lecce is home to sandstone buildings that boast grand Baroque architecture and are lavishly adorned with fanciful cherubs, monsters, flowers, fruit, beauties and beasts. Upon arrival at Porta Napoli, one of the oldest gates of the town, begin your guided walking tour.

Piazza Duomo and Cathedral

Narrow streets full of beautiful palaces lead you to Piazza Duomo, where the magnificent Cathedral and Archbishop's Palace are located. Built between 1659 and 1670 on a pre-existing Romanesque church, the Cathedral faces both the Archbishop's and Seminary's palaces. Although its main façade is rather plainly decorated, its side façade is an explosion of Baroque architecture with Lecce's patron saint, Saint Oronzo, in a triumphal arch. After a guided tour of the Cathedral, proceed to Piazza Sant'Oronzo, which lies in the heart of the town.

Piazza Sant'Oronzo and Basilica of Santa Croce

The Piazza Sant'Oronzo is the site of the most important local Roman remains, a 20,000-seat amphitheater from the 2nd century A.D., and a column that originally stood in Brindisi to mark the end of the Appian Way. Continue walking along the little alleys en route to one of Lecce's most magnificent highlights, the Basilica of Santa Croce. Inside, view a splendid array of fascinating statues and ornaments.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available to explore Lecce's town centre before re-boarding your coach and commencing the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.5 miles (about 2.4 km) on flat, uneven and cobblestone surfaces that may be slippery when wet, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 10 steps at the Cathedral and 10 steps at the Basilica of Santa Croce. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Proper attire is required to enter the cathedrals and/or sacred sites; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. Lightweight clothing and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.

Brindisi on Foot

Discover a unique blend of Old World and modern-day architecture during this picturesque walking tour through historic Brindisi.

Church of Santa Maria del Casale

Depart the pier for the short drive to the 13th-century Church of Santa Maria del Casale. Located near Brandisi's airport, this splendid, Romanesque-Gothic-styled church is one of Italy's most important national monuments. Its elegant façade features honey-coloured and white local stones. Inside, view a series of fine Byzantine-style frescoes, including the 'The Last Judgement' and 'The Tree of the Cross', with twelve branches symbolising the Apostles. A visit is also included to the church's adjoining cloister, which is thought to be the site where the Templar Knights were executed in March 1310.

Brindisi Walking Tour

Next, re-board your coach and proceed to the town centre. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of modern Brindisi and marvel at its shops and beautiful palaces. Leaving the Piazza Vittoria, discover the ancient Roman District. Beneath the area of the new Teatro Verdi, the remains of the ancient Roman Brindisium were discovered in the 1960s. Visit the elegant Palazzo Granafei Nervegna, which houses one of the two Roman Columns known as the final point of the Appian Way. For many years, the columns were the most important reference to sailors entering Brindisi's port.

Temple of San Giovanni al Sepolcro

In the ancient heart of Brindisi, a visit is made to the late-11th-century Temple of San Giovanni al Sepolcro, one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in all of southern Italy. An exterior visit is then made to the Cathedral, and the site where copies of the Roman Columns are located. Following your walking tour, you may opt to re-board your coach for the drive back to the pier, or remain in Brindisi for further exploration and return to the ship at your own expense.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.3 miles (2.1 kilometres), with uneven and cobblestone surfaces in the town centre, a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and approximately 35 steps whilst leaving the Roman columns. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Proper attire is required to enter the cathedrals and/or sacred sites; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. The purchase of a small snack is recommended in order to use the restroom facilities. The tour sequence may vary.
