Silversea Luxury Cruises A Atiu

Atui is the third largest island in the Cook Islands about 115 miles northeast of Rarotonga. It is a raised volcanic island surrounded by a one-mile-wide ring of twenty-foot high fossilized coral. Inside this ring the land rises to a central flat-topped hill. This is where all five of the main villages are located. Between the hill and the cliffs is a zone of fertile swampland and lush taro plantations. Atiuans trace their ancestry from Tangaroa, a Polynesia god of the sea. View more

Atiu’s local name is Enuamanu, meaning land of the insects of animals, because when the god arrives that is all that inhabited the island. Captain Cook sighted the island on 31 March, 1777. The original Atiuans were fierce, warrior people and before the missionaries arrived in the 1800’s, they waged war on neighbouring islands. Today, the island is best known for its diverse birdlife. More species live here than on any of the other islands, and they include some of the world's rarest.
