Atacama Coastal Trek

Experience the splendid beauty and marine life along the sandy coast of Arica during this picturesque, half-day nature trek.

Scenic Drive and El Morro de Arica Viewpoint

Depart the pier for the scenic drive to the El Morro de Arica Viewpoint. En route, pass by the renowned beach resorts of El Laucho and La Lisera. Upon arrival at the El Morro de Arica Viewpoint, take in breath-taking panoramic vistas of the city, ocean and port.

Coastal Walking Tour, Puntilla and Main Plaza

Next, your drive continues south along the coastal road to the starting point of your guided walking tour. Along the way, traverse the sandy hills and sidewalls of these sandy mountains, and explore caves, caverns and other fascinating natural sites. A brief stop is made at Puntilla to observe and photograph the sea lions and local birds in their natural habitat.

Afterward, walk back to the coach along the same trail, and then commence the brief drive back to Arica.

Upon arrival, you may opt to return directly to the pier or be dropped off at the Main Plaza to explore the downtown area and return to the ship at your own expense.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1 mile (about 1.6 kilometers), at times over uneven, sandy and rocky terrain, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. It is not recommended for guests with fear of heights and who could experience dizziness. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must be at least eight (8) years old to participate on this tour. Operation of this tour is subject to weather and walking conditions.

Chilean Valleys and Their People

Travel to the Azapa Valley and get to know the tastes and the traditions of the region and visit a local family. Discover the area products such as tropical fruit, olives and flowers. The area also is home to relics of the cultures that once populated the area.

The Asoagro Market

Leave the pier to the colourful Asoagro fruits and vegetables market. Here you will have the opportunity to learn about the local products that are cultivated in the Azapa and Lluta Valleys.

Hacienda Visit

After some time to walk through the stands and taste some products, proceed to share lunch with a local family. On the way, you will drive along the Azapa Road and take the old road for a short photo stop at the Tropilla geoglyphs.

During the visit to the local family you will have the opportunity to walk through the house and enjoy a typical lunch menu prepared with own recipes of our hosts. Learn about their family history and traditions and also how they have been adapted to live in this fertile oasis.

Town Highlights

After lunch, continue to Arica's "Colon Square", also known as the "Plaza de Armas" or "Plaza Colón". Lear about the monuments and buildings set around the square, including the Church of San Marcos. The prefabricated, wrought iron church was built as a replacement for the previous church that was swept away by a tidal wave in 1869. Erected in 1876, this Gothic-style construction stands proudly over the main square, and boasts a beautiful, wooden door made at the Gustave Eiffel et Cie. workshops. Lastly, visit the nearby market, where there are plentiful opportunities to pick up a souvenir.

At the conclusion of the tour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This Silver Shore Collection involves minimal walking at guest's own discretion. We suggest guests dress in light clothing and wear comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. The host family does not speak English; your guide will offer the translation. Due to average local temperatures, coaches are not equipped with air-conditioning

Flavours & Colours of Arica

Learn about the flavours of the region during this half day outing. Leave the pier to drive directly towards the Azapa Valley. Enjoy the magnificent views while riding to an olive production farm.

En route, a photo stop is made to observe the interesting geoglyphs designed on the hills by ancient inhabitants of the region. From here, your drive ascends approximately 25 miles (about 40 kilometres), where a refreshment stop is made at a rustic inn for a coca leaf tea to avoid feeling sick from the altitude, just as the Aymara people do.

Copaquilla Pukara and Viewpoint, and Putre Viewpoint

Next, re-board your coach and head to the Copaquilla Pukara, the archaeological remains of an old fortress built to protect its surroundings. A photo stop is made at the Copaquilla Viewpoint before continuing on towards Putre Town. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 3.25-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 383 yards (about 300 metres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. Walking at the Plaza de Putre is at the discretion of each guest. Due to the high altitude, this tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with heart and/or respiratory problems, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, raingear and a warm jacket from the ship. Guests must be at least nine years old to participate on this tour.

Plaza Colón

On the way back, stop at Plaza Colón for some time at leisure to stroll around. At agreed time return to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 328 yards (299 metres) and a few steps to negotiate to access the museum. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and for those who utilise a wheelchair; however guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach with minimal assistance. The church is not wheelchair accessible. We suggest guests dress in seasonal attire and wear flat, walking shoes and sun protection. The order of sites visited may vary. Due to average local temperatures, coaches are not equipped with air-conditioning. Most shops are closed on Sunday's. Local currency & USD cash accepted. Credit cards are not accepted.
