Silversea Luxury Cruises A Antibes

Antibes

Located in the southeast of the French Provence region, Antibes ranks among France’s oldest cities. Originally named ‘Antipolis’, Antibes was founded by Greek merchants in the 5th century. The Old City is a maze of small, flower-bedecked streets with Roman and Medieval sections. A portion of the impressive 16th-century ramparts overlooking the Mediterranean Sea still protect the heart of the Old City. Antibes is comprised of three distinct sections. The first is Antibes, which includes the Old City and ramparts. View more

Next is Juan les Pins, a famous beach resort once praised by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and the site of the annual International Jazz Festival. Antibes’ third section is Cap d’Antibes, a wooden peninsula that has become a haunt for the rich and famous. Antibes is also home to Europe’s largest yacht harbor, Port Vauban, where the super-yachts of the wealthy are anchored. For cruise vessels, Antibes offers an opportunity to visit some of Provence’s prettiest areas. It also serves as a convenient starting point for trips to the walled-in hilltop village of St. Paul de Vence. Pier Information The ship is scheduled to anchor in the bay and tender guests ashore. The town centre is within walking distance from the tender pier. Taxis are not easy to find; therefore, it is recommended that private travel arrangements be planned in advance. Shopping The Old City offers a wide range of souvenir shops, home decoration, antiques and Provencal artifacts. Postcards are easily found, and must be sent with French postage stamps. Most shops, however, do close between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The local currency is the euro. Cuisine The cuisine in the southeastern part of France is considered to be varied and healthy, thanks to the common use of quality fresh products and olive oil. Fresh local fish caught daily, excellent vegetable stew, or ratatouille , and great local wines highlight the wide range of gastronomical delights that can be found here. In addition, restaurants in the harbor area typically offer the chef’s daily special, or plat du jour , on their menus. Other Sites Antibes primarily serves as a starting point for trips into the surrounding areas, which are included in the organized excursions. An early-morning stroll through the local fruit and vegetable market may also be of interest. Private Arrangements For those guests interested in touring at their leisure, we are pleased to offer .Silver Shore Privato - both half-day and full-day private arrangements by private car or van. This program may be booked in advance at silversea.com or purchased on board the ship, subject to availability. Nice & St. Paul de Vence

Discover two of the most charming villages of the French Riviera with their beauty and architecture during this scenic, sightseeing tour of Eze and St. Paul de Vence. Guided tours will show you the treasures of these medieval villages, both set high atop the rocky hillsides that dominate this landscape.

Nice

Enjoy a panoramic city tour along the 'Promenade des Anglais', a splendid palm-lined boulevard stretching along the Baie des Anges. See in amazement landmarks like the legendary Negresco, an imposing hotel with its Belle Epoque façade, and the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, built with pink bricks, light grey marble and vivid colour ceramics, all sitting beneath six onion-shaped domes that lend an exotic touch to the Nice landscape.

Next, visit the Old City, where tall houses tightly-packed across narrow streets are often festooned with bright flowers or hanging laundry, and designed to provide shade and keep the streets cool during the long, hot summers. A stop is made for a leisurely stroll along the Cours Saleya, the elegant promenade of Old Nice, which is now lined with shops, and restaurants and the famous Flower Market.

Following your visit and some free time; re-board your coach to reach St. Paul de Vence.

St. Paul de Vence

Continue your journey to this ancient hilltop village's medieval atmosphere and view first-hand how well and perfectly preserved it is. Narrow streets are flanked by 16th-century houses, most of which are now occupied by gift shops and art galleries. During the guided walking tour, stroll about the crooked lanes and see the remarkable remains of the 12th-century Gothic church. Enjoy some free time for shopping.

Following your tour, board your coach for the return to Nice.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking on uneven, steep and partially-cobblestone streets. The visit to St. Paul de Vence takes place entirely on-foot. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, walking shoes and sun protection.

Antibes and Absinthe Tasting

Enjoy a half-day tour to Antibes, one of the most well-known resort towns on the Cote-D'Azur. Known as Europe's largest yacht harbour, it once was the only large town between Marseille and Italy. The only town on the coast to be protected by ramparts it has managed to conserve historic monuments from each period in its heritage.

Antibes

Your tour departs Villefranche for the scenic drive to Antibes. Upon arrival, depart on a guided walking tour and view the small Roman and medieval streets, walk along the ramparts overlooking the sea and visit the Provencal market, in the heart of Antibes. Here, experience a festival of fragrances and colours: olive oil and spices, fruit and flowers, fish, vegetables, and cheese. During your tour you overlook Port Vauban, Europe's largest yacht harbour, where the billionaires' super yachts are anchored.

Absinthe Tasting

After your walking tour, experience an Absinthe tasting in a quaint shop that sells regional delicacies and olive oil. The tasting takes place in a beautiful 19th century vaulted cellar with a Roman well, located underneath the market. There, amidst wonderful "Belle Époque" décor, taste toasts of tapenade, (an olive & caper paste) and pissaladière, (an open onion tart prepared by the nearby baker especially for the occasion). You have the opportunity to taste a small glass of Absinthe, the famous wormwood-based alcoholic beverage, so dear to French poets in the 19th century. The Absinthe is served from a beautiful crystal fountain on a sugar cube placed on a special spoon. Marvel in this hidden gem that on your own you may have never discovered.

Following your tasting experience, enjoy some free time before you board the coach for the return trip to Villefranche.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking over uneven surfaces and cobblestone streets for approximately 1400m (1 mile). This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, walking shoes and bring sun protection. Guests need to be of legal drinking age to take part in the Absinthe tasting.

Antibes & Picasso Museum

Experience the splendid beauty and landmarks of Antibes during this delightful, half-day sightseeing excursion. The natural beauty remains in the Vieille Ville (old town), with the ramparts along the sea and the long, arched protective wall along the port. Discover the Picasso museum, in the Chàteau Grimaldi, between the covered market on the Place Massena and the ramparts. Picasso worked here in the chàteau in 1946, and his studio is part of the museum.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive via the coastal road. En route, pass through the scenic Cap d'Antibes. Located on the city of Antibes, this lovely peninsula is famous for its elegant villas and wonderful vistas.

Old Town Walking Tour

Upon arrival in Antibes, take a guided walking tour through the Old Town. Discover the fascinating history and landmarks of this medieval enclave, its ramparts along the sea, Provencal market, famous Port Vauban, the largest European marina, and the flowery Safranier District. Following your walking tour and some free time, continue to the Picasso Museum.

Picasso Museum

Picasso enthusiastically worked here and created numerous works, drawings and paintings. Following his stay in 1946, Pablo Picasso left on deposit 23 paintings and 44 drawings. During your visit, marvel at the large collection of notable works, drawings and paintings on display, including the Joy of Living, Satyr, Centaur Fauna and the Trident, Slimer Urchins, Sea Urchins Woman, Still Life with Owl and the Three Urchins, and more.

Afterward, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately one mile (about 1.6 kilometres), at times on inclined surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and five steps at sites visited.
