Anchorage CIty Sights (Tour & Airport Transfer)

Experience the sights and sounds of Alaska's largest city during this narrated tour of Anchorage, with a transfer to the airport for your flight home.


Anchorage City Tour

Depart the pier for the approximately one-hour sightseeing drive through the city of Anchorage. Along the way, pass through downtown Anchorage en route to Earthquake Park and the world's largest floatplane sea base, Lake Hood.


Alaska Native Heritage Centre

Your first stop is at the Alaska Native Heritage Centre. During your two-hour, self-guided visit, you can explore the facility at your own pace whilst learning about Alaska's native culture, language, heritage and traditions. Following your visit, re-board your coach and transfer to Anchorage Airport for your late-afternoon flight home.


Please note: This tour is offered to guests disembarking the ship with flights after 4:00 p.m. and the tour will end at the airport. This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach via steps. Warm, layered clothing and flat, closed-toe walking shoes are recommended.

Iditarod Champion and Anchorage Museum (Tour & Airport Transfer)

Explore Alaska past and present during this memorable excursion to the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, a visit to the home of Iditarod champion Martin Buser and a transfer to the airport for your flight home.


Martin Buser Home

Depart the pier for the approximately 1.5-hour narrated drive to Big Lake, and a visit to the home of Iditarod veteran Martin Buser. Upon arrival, hear exciting tales of travelling the Iditarod trail and see his champion team. If available, guests will have an opportunity hold the newest batch of champion puppies before re-boarding your coach for the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to Anchorage. A box lunch is served either at Buser's house or on the coach (weather permitting).


Anchorage Museum of History

Upon arrival back in Anchorage, proceed to the Anchorage Museum of History. During your self-guided visit, learn about Alaskan art, history and science, and view a wide array of displays and artefacts. Afterward, some time is made available to explore downtown Anchorage at your leisure. Your tour concludes with a transfer to Anchorage Airport for your flight home.

4NT POST-CRUISE: DENALI - SUMMIT OF N. AMERICA

On your way to Denali, stop for an exclusive experience at the home of four-time Iditarod champion Martin Buser to learn about the Last Great Race and the wonderful champion dogs he raises and trains for mushing. Denali National Park is a four million acre wildlife refuge surrounding Mount Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. The park is home to an abundance of wildlife including bears, caribou, Dall sheep, gray wolves and moose. Your full day fully narrated Tundra Wilderness Tour of Denali National Park ventures deep into the park in search of wildlife. Enjoy a train ride on the famous Alaska Railroad from Denali to Talkeetna.


Note: Guests should schedule flight departures from Anchorage at the end of this program. Guests who require a visa for entry into the United States must obtain it prior to travel.


DAY 1 - SEWARD / GIRDWOOD

Debark and bid farewell to the Silver Shadow as you board our exclusive train heading north. A quick stop in the town of Girdwood will allow you to disembark the train. Transfer from the station to the Hotel Alyeska. Following check-in, the balance of the day (including all meals) is at your leisure. Included in your stay is a ticket to ride the Aerial Tram to the top of Mt. Alyeska for a superb panoramic view of the valley.

DAY 2 - GIRDWOOD / DENALI

After breakfast at the hotel, board the waiting transportation to depart on a full-day scenic motor coach trip to Denali. A boxed lunch will be provided. Stop en-route at Martin Buser's home for an exclusive visit, where the four-time Iditarod Champion will regale you with tales of the Last Great Race and the wonderful champion dogs he raises and trains for mushing. Martin became fascinated with sled dogs while still a teen. He came to Alaska in 1979 to enhance his knowledge of care and training of sled dogs. He began working and training with long-time Alaskan mushers Earl and Natalie Norris and ran his first Iditarod in 1980.


Arriving in Denali in the mid to late afternoon, check-in to your hotel. Enjoy a reception with a mountain climber speaker. Afterwards you may wish to take advantage of the extended sunlight and enjoy an evening stroll through town. Dinner tonight is on your own.


Overnight at the Grand Denali Lodge (or similar) at Denali National Park


DAY 3 - DENALI

Enjoy a hearty Alaskan-style breakfast at the hotel early this morning before heading out deep into the National Park. As you join with other travelers from around the world on the fully-guided Tundra Wilderness Tour you'll get an ongoing informational talk from your driver/guide, along with wildlife spotting and spectacular scenery. A box lunch is included.


Watch for moose between headquarters and Savage Campground and look for caribou anywhere above tree line. If you're lucky, Mount Denali may make its first appearance around Mile 9. You will ride over high mountain passes and will want to keep an eye out for Dall sheep or bears on the mountainsides.


The highest point of the drive -literally and figuratively- is at Polychrome Pass. There, the Plains of Murie extend to the Alaska Range on the horizon. Just a bit further on is the Toklat River and Toklat Bridge. At Mile 62 you'll have a superb photo opportunity of Mount Denali - assuming the weather cooperates.


Return back to the hotel, the balance of the day is at your leisure. Enjoy dinner on your own this evening.

DAY 4 - DENALI / ANCHORAGE

After breakfast at the hotel, the morning is yours to relax or enjoy one of several optional excursions that will be available.


Late morning, transfer to the rail depot and board the Alaska Railroad (Deluxe Dome Railcar Service) for the scenic ride to Talkeetna. During your thrilling ride through the thick forests and along the edges of steep valleys, you may catch a glimpse of native wildlife from the comfort of your glass-domed rail car. Along the way cross Hurricane Gulch, perched more than 300 feet (91 metres) above the river below

The highlight of today will be passing 300+ feet over Hurricane Gulch. Seating is under windows that extend 180 degrees around you, so you'll be able to thrill at the majesty of this and other sites along the way. There is even an open-air platform if you'd like to step outside and stretch your legs a bit.


Lunch will be served in the dining salon at mid-day. You will be amazed at the variety of items the chefs can prepare - from delicious hot and cold Alaskan specialties to authentic reindeer chili!


At Talkeetna disembark the train and take this opportunity to stretch your legs a bit. Board a motorcoach for the last leg of your journey to Anchorage and the Captain Cook Hotel. Dinner this evening is on your own.


Overnight at the Captain Cook Hotel


DAY 5 - ANCHORAGE / HOMEWARD

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning and some additional time to explore the city. Check out time is 12:00 noon. If your flight is much later this evening, you might consider adding an additional night to your stay in order to hold your room until you depart. Your Silversea representative will arrange your transfer to Anchorage airport for your homeward flight.


IMPORTANT NOTES:

Alaska offers 5-star scenery; the accommodations are somewhat less. The Grande Denali Lodge offers comfortable, but simple, rooms and is only open during the summer months; likewise, the Captain Cook Hotel operates at its peak capacity at this time of the year and is staffed with seasonal personnel. Lapses in service do occur. The Tundra Wilderness Tour included on Day 3 is an exclusive concession of local native Alaskan residents. In order to minimize the impact of visitors on the eco-system, this tour may consolidate the members of the Silversea group with other travelers.

2NT PRE-CRUISE FLIGHT TO BEAR COUNTRY

Head for a prime grizzly habitat on a fifty-minute float plane ride, with scenic views of Cook Inlet along the way. Aboard a 4-wheel drive vehicle, head for an area where bears are known to fish, for a close up (but respectful view) of these magnificent creatures.


Please note: Guests should fly into Anchorage to begin this program. Guests who require a visa for entry into the United States must obtain it prior to travel.

DAY 1 - ARRIVE ANCHORAGE

On arrival at Anchorage International Airport you will be met by the local Silversea Cruises representative and taken on a brief orientation tour of Anchorage, before transferring to the Captain Cook Hotel. If your flight is scheduled to arrive in the morning or early afternoon, please be aware that the hotel's official check-in time is 3:00 p.m. You might wish to consider reserving an additional night to insure immediate occupancy upon arrival.


Embraced by six mountain ranges and warmed by a maritime climate, Anchorage is alive year round with adventure, recreation, seasonal festivities, and sporting events - a modern city surrounded by spectacular wilderness. Lunch and dinner are at your own expense.


Overnight at the Captain Cook Hotel


DAY 2 - ANCHORAGE / LAKE HOOD / FLIGHTSEEING / ANCHORAGE

After breakfast at the hotel, depart for a brief tour of Anchorage's highlights. Continue to Lake Hood, home to the largest float-plane base in the world. From the base in Lake Hood you board a Bush Plane board a small bush plane for a spectacular sightseeing flight to rural Alaska. Land in the backcountry where a guide will take you on a short 4-wheel drive ride along the beach while looking for bears in their natural habitat. This could be one of the closest bear viewing experiences of your life time. During your time on land, you will go on two short guided walks to exceptional bear viewing areas.


This afternoon on your return by small bush plane to Lake Hood, a snack lunch bag is provided. Upon arrival, return transfer to the hotel and spend the evening at your leisure. Dinner is at your own expense.


Bear Season, dictated by the annual salmon runs, is generally considered to be June through August, peaking in July. As with any wildlife viewing, bear sightings are expected but cannot be guaranteed.


DAY 3 - ANCHORAGE / SEWARD FOR EMBARKATION

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast this morning and some additional time to explore the city. Lunch is on your own. Late morning, transfer to the train station for the exclusive train journey down to Seward. Please be aware there are no overhead or storage bins for carry-on luggage on the train and carry- on bags should be kept to a minimum.
