Silversea Luxury Cruises A Alicante

The bustling resort of Alicante serves not only as the port for Madrid, but is also one of the loveliest vacation spots along Spain’s sunny Costa Blanca. The latter is primarily due to the pleasant climate. Various civilizations have flourished along these shores. Early records indicate that the city dates back to a Carthaginian settlement established in 325 BC. These settlers were followed by the Romans, who equally found the area inviting. Then the Moors ruled this region for five centuries and named the city Al-Akant. View more

Today’s name probably stems from this origin. The city’s occupation by Roman and Moorish forces accounts for a notable and varied heritage. In fact, much of this cultural impact is still apparent today in numerous buildings, names and the cuisine. Much of the city’s economy is based on tourism and agriculture. Wine, raisins, and other products from the surrounding areas find their way into the cargo holds of ships bound for worldwide destinations.

Excursiones en Alicante

Novelda and Wine

Experience the exquisite beauty and flavours of Novelda during this visit to the St. Magdalena Sanctuary, and a tour and tasting at an area winery.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive into the hinterland en route to the charming little village of Novelda.

St. Magdalena Sanctuary

Upon arrival, a visit is made to the St. Magdalena Sanctuary. Construction on this Catalan Modernist-styled building began as part of a project by Novelda-based engineer Jose Sala Sala in 1918, was carried out in three phases and concluded in 1946. Adjacent to the sanctuary is a splendid castle called 'De la Mola', an Islamic-style fortress that originally included a polygonal floor shape with eight overhanging square cubes. Today, only four cubes remain, and two are covered up. The castle's interior features a square tower that is made from adobe on a masonry base, but missing its top.

Winery Tour and Tasting

Next, your drive continues on with a visit to the winery. Upon arrival, observe its elaborate winemaking process. See the grape reception area, control laboratory, deposits area, barrels of wine and more. Afterward, participate in a tasting of two different wines accompanied by finger food. Before leaving the winery, you may opt to purchase a bottle of the wine you have tasted.

Following your visit, re-board your coach for the approximately 30-minute sightseeing drive past the main squares and avenues of Alicante City en route to the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, with some stairs to negotiate at the entrance to the sanctuary and castle.

Elche, Village of Palms

Explore the palm tree and footwear capital of Europe during this scenic, half-day visit to Elche.

Depart the pier for an orientation drive through Alicante, then continue on to the town of Elche.

Priest's Garden

Upon arrival, take a stroll around the Priest's Garden, or 'Huerto del Cura', an exotic garden featuring many rare plants and palms, including one shaped like a chandelier.

Elche Municipal Park

Then, a visit is made to the Municipal Park, home to a verdant expanse of palms and plants. It is believed that the Moors planted approximately 300,000 palms here in the 11th century, and they have since become a symbol of the area's identity. These trees comprise the southernmost palm grove in Europe, and have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Basilica de Santa María

Next, proceed for a visit to the Basilica de Santa María, which occupies the site of the former principal mosque of Muslim Elche. The style is pure Neo-Classical, which followed the decorative Italianate Baroque seen in the Assumption façade, one of the most beautiful façades from the Valencian-Baroque period.

Pikolinos Museum and Factory

Your tour concludes with a visit to the Pikolinos Museum and Factory. The footwear manufacturing industry has been the city's economic motor for more than a century, with over 2,100 production and sales centres. Pikolinos was founded in 1984, and the unique antique appearance of their shoes sets them apart as original and distinctive. After a visit to the Pikolinos Museum, re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves easy walking through the parks and gardens and it is suitable for guests with limited mobility, able to embark/disembark the vehicle via steps. The order of sights may vary.

Village of Guadalest

Explore the scenic beauty and history of Guadalest during this picturesque tour of the village, Castillo de San José and the 17th-century Orduña House.

Depart the pier for the approximately 1-1.5-hour drive to Guadalest, with a refreshment and photo stop made en route.

Guadalest

Guadalest is perched on the pinnacle of a granite mountain offering spectacular panoramic views. Its precipice stands as a sentinel over the Guadalest valley and river from which the village takes its name. Upon arrival, take a walking tour of this small village. The Moors originally founded Guadalest, carved its surrounding hillsides into terraces and planted them with crops. The village is unique, as its historical centre is located at the top of a rocky outcrop.

Castillo de San José

Next, proceed for a visit to the Castillo de San José. Its freestanding bell tower dominates the settlement, and is accessed through a natural tunnel in the rock. The castle was built in the 11th century atop the highest point in the village. A visit is also made to the recently-restored, 17-century Orduña House to admire its furnishings and decoration.

Your tour concludes with some free time to browse the village at your leisure before re-boarding the coach for the approximately 1-1.5-hour return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking over uneven ground. However, it is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair.

Alicante Highlights

Take in a few of Alicante's sights on this introductory excursion of the cultural, financial, artistic, and social nucleus of the Costa Blanca.

Depart the pier for a short drive to the Castle of Santa Barbara, set high on the Benacantil Hill which dominates the city. Visit this 16th-century fortress and enjoy the splendid views of the city and coastline.

Next, continue with a guided stroll through the charming 'old quarter' nestling at the foot of the imposing castle. Pass the 18th-century baroque Town Hall façade and the Santa Maria church, the oldest in the city.

The winding streets of the historic area are focused around the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) and the San Nicolás Cathedral. Explore the Cathedral Church with its austere renaissance façade belying the magnificent 17th-century nave and the lovely 15th-century cloister contained within.

Finally, on the beautiful palm-lined Esplanade of Spain, some free time is afforded to browse the surrounding streets before your panoramic return drive takes you back to the pier.

Upon arrival, enjoy the flexibility of shopping and sightseeing on your own pace, while still having the convenience of easy and reliable transportation to and from the town.

Soak up the sun on one of its magnificent beaches - Levante (sunrise) or Poniente (sunset). Take a stroll through the quaint, narrow streets of the old town set on the headland between the beaches and enjoy the views from the look-out point - a popular place for weddings. Shop in the souvenir stores or in the smart clothes and shoe boutiques. You may even hire a bicycle and head out into the hinterland or to the nearby Albir Beach. Visit one of the theme parks or sip a drink and relax. The day is yours to spend as you please.
