A launching pad for ferries heading southeast to the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, Puntarenas could easily be relegated to what you see from your car as you roll through town. Nonetheless, it's a city with a past as an affluent port town and principal vacation spot for San José's wealthy, who arrived by train in the last century. Once the port was moved and roads opened to other beaches, Puntarenas's economy crashed. Recent attempts by politicians and hotel owners to create tourism-boosting diversions have been only marginally successful thus far.

Located on the southeast tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, the Curu Wildlife Refuge is known for its pristine, white-sand beaches and impressive variety of species ranging from monkeys to sand crabs. In total the refuge covers 3,707 total acres and 656 feet of coastline. Travelers to the Curu Wildlife Refuge will quickly notice that they are in the minority at the site, with only a few people in the area among the abundance of animals and sea creatures.
Named after its turtle-shaped volcanic rock formations, Isla Tortuga is a small island set just off the tip of Nicoya Peninsula’s southern coast. The island offers a unique combination of white pristine beaches, palm trees, red volcanic rocks, verdant jungles and sparkling crystals that line the shores. Sunlight reaches right through the crystal clear waters at Isla Tortuga, making it a sought-after destination for snorkelers and scuba divers.
The crown jewel of Costa Rica's national park system, Corcovado National Park (Parque Nacional Corcovado), is comprised of an enormous 103,290 acres (41,800 ha) of tropical rainforest. The largest of Costa Rica's parks, it encompasses about a third of the Osa Peninsula and embraces an unbelievable amount of its biodiversity. Corcovado Park represents a very diverse population of flora and fauna, including 10% of the mammals found in the Americas.
Wild, scenic and incredibly bio-diverse, Golfo Dulce is not on most tourists itineraries. The name, says it all, Golfo Dulce or sweet gulf, in English. After a well justified visit to the Golfo Dulce, located in the South Pacific region of Costa Rica, and adjacent to the Osa Peninsula, visitors will be delighted and perplexed, wondering why they would ever leave this wonderland. Several coastal hamlets reside along this enchanting gulf, namely Puerto Jiménez, Golfito, Zancudo and Pavones, as well as the Piedras Blancas National Park.
Days at sea are the perfect opportunity to relax, unwind and catch up with what you’ve been meaning to do. So whether that is whale watching from the Observatory Lounge, writing home to your loved ones or simply topping up your tan by the pool, these blue sea days are the perfect balance to busy days spent exploring shore side.
Cocos Island (Isla del Coco in Spanish) is an uninhabited island located off the shore of Costa Rica. It is a National & Marine Park and UNESCO World Heritage site and is surrounded by deep waters with counter-currents, offering excellent environments for many different species of fish. The beauty of Cocos has inspired tales of pirate treasure and the island was one of Jacques Cousteau’s favorite places. Seabirds also favor Isla del Coco including Brown boobies, Red-footed Boobies and Great Frigatebirds.

Isla de la Plata translates to ‘Island of Silver’, and the name was derived from the legend of swashbuckling pirate Sir Francis Drake’s buried silver treasure. The popular legend states that in the 16th century, hundreds of tons of silver and gold were never fully recovered and are still hidden on the island. The island was privately owned until 1979, when it was declared part of Ecuador’s Machalilla National Park. Best known for its fauna, which is amazingly similar to that of the Galapagos Islands, Isla de la Plata is a delightful place for birding, photography and long nature walks.
Several National Sanctuaries and Ecological Reserves found near Machala boast sun-drenched beaches and mangrove forests. Pelicans, frigatebirds, and egrets nest nearby as Blue-footed Boobies dive for fish further out to sea. Whales and dolphins can occasionally be seen in the vicinity. Machala, with a population of approximately 250,000 inhabitants, is moreover known for traditional Latin American foods from shrimp ceviche to fried bananas. In fact, bananas feature heavily in the culture as the city is also known as the “Capital of the Banana.
This tropical city of more than two million people spreads out along the banks of the chocolate-colored Guayas River, about 12 miles inland from the Gulf of Guayaquil. The river, navigable for the largest of ocean vessels, makes Guayaquil one of the Pacific’s most important and best-protected ports. Approximately 85% of Ecuador’s exports flows through this port and down the Guayas River to the outside world. Guayaquil is a city of industry, oil and sugar refineries, cement mills, breweries, and several other factories concentrated along the crowded riverbanks.

puntos esenciales del viaje

Immerse yourself in nature’s wonders along the coast of Costa Rica and Ecuador. This incredible voyage will leave from Puntarenas and will sail via Cocos Island –UNESCO World Heritage- to Isla de la Plata and mainland Ecuador. Hike Costa Rica’s Manuel Antonio National Park to view rare flora and fauna, and explore national parks, reserves and wildlife refuges on mainland Costa Rica before seeing Cocos Island. In Ecuador visit Isla de la Plata, known as a small version of Galapagos, and see one of three reserves near Machala. This voyage is a birdwatcher’s dream, with several endemic species visible in these regions. Birds that can be expected include Magnificent Frigatebirds, Blue- and Red-footed Boobies, Scarlet Macaws, toucans, egrets, hummingbirds, and many others. You can also go snorkelling to see the diverse sea life at Isla Tortuga and Isla de la Plata. Throughout the voyage, learn about the history, geology, wildlife and botany of these locations from lecture presentations offered by your knowledgeable onboard Expedition Team.

Voyage Highlights:

Curu National Park, Costa Rica –
Curu National Wildlife Refuge is located on the southern Nicoya Peninsula. We will explore this area teaming with abundant wildlife and one of the most unspoiled beaches on the Nicoya Peninsula. Curu National Wildlife Refuge is managed sustainably and protects tropical moist and dry forests, mangroves and coral reefs. Some 200 species of birds thrive in the area and during a guided walk we will look for Scarlet Macaws, Rufous-tailed Hummingbirds and Blue-gray Tanagers, as well as capuchin and howler monkeys.

Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica –
Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica’s emblematic national park and a crucial wildlife sanctuary, is home to many of Costa Rica’s endangered species. While this is Costa Rica’s “smallest” national park, it spans 1,700 acres of land and 136,000 acres of ocean! The site is known for its wildlife-rich hiking trails and gorgeous white sand beaches.

Osa Peninsula and Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica –
We will visit the forests of the Osa region and Corcovado National Park, the most exuberant in Central America, and have the chance to see the famous gardens at Casa Orquideas (Orchid House) where we find a profusion of over 100 varieties of orchids along with heliconias, bromeliads, ornamental and fruit trees. Keen birders can also keep an eye out for parrots, hummingbirds, and colorful toucans attracted by the plants.

Cocos Island, Costa Rica –
Cocos Island is also known as “Treasure Island”, as it is supposed that several treasures have been buried there. The Costa Rican government has prohibited all treasure hunts as Cocos Island supports the only humid tropical forest on an oceanic island in the Eastern Tropical Pacific.

Isla de la Plata, Ecuador –
Spend time on Isla de la Plata, or the “Island of Silver”, where legend says that hundreds of tons of silver and gold were hidden and never recovered by Sir Francis Drake. Hike across the spectacular island, compared to the Galapagos Islands for its fauna, making it ideal for bird-watching and snorkelling.

Wildlife Watch List:

• Toucans, Black-necked Stilt , Cattle and Great Egrets, Turkey and Black Vulture, Tropical Kingbird, Lemon-rumped, Blue-grey, White-shouldered, Beryl-spangled and Palm Tanager, Rufous-tailed and Violet-bellied Hummingbird, White-necked Jacobin, Long-tailed Mockingbird, Rufous Motmot, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Ornate, Boat-billed and Olive-striped Flycatcher, White-bearded Manakin
