The Kingdom of Denmark is the geographical link between Scandinavia and Europe. Half-timber villages and tidy farms rub shoulders with towns and a few cities, where pedestrians set the pace, not traffic. In the capital, Copenhagen—København in Danish—mothers safely park baby carriages outside bakeries while outdoor cafés fill with cappuccino-sippers, and lanky Danes pedal to work in lanes thick with bicycle traffic. The town was a fishing colony until 1157, when Valdemar the Great gave it to Bishop Absalon, who built a castle on the site of what is now the parliament, Christiansborg.

Although much nearer to Sweden, the island of Bornholm has been a Danish possession since 1522 and was once an important Baltic trading port. Today, the islanders make their livelihood from fishing, farming and, increasingly, tourism. Visitors from Scandinavia and Germany flock to Bornholm and the town of Rønne each summer to enjoy the scenic beauty. The south features a coastline of white sand beaches, while the north boasts rugged cliffs; the wooded interior is crisscrossed by hiking trails.

On a long, thin sliver of an island, just offshore in the Baltic Sea, there’s a land of slowly rotating windmills, and extraordinary landscapes. Öland is dominated by the spectacular shell of Borgholm Castle, and this grand, squat ruin stands proud and imposing - despite having been gutted by fire over two centuries years ago.

Gotland is Sweden's main holiday island, a place of ancient history, a relaxed summer-party vibe, wide sandy beaches, and wild cliff formations called raukar (the remnants of reefs formed more than 400 million years ago). Measuring 125 km (78 miles) long and 52 km (32 miles) at its widest point, Gotland is where Swedish sheep farming has its home. In its charming glades, 35 varieties of wild orchids thrive, attracting botanists from all over the world.

Joint European Capital of Culture in 2011 (with Talinn, Estonia), Turku is the oldest town in Finland. Founded at the end of the 13th century, the town was the capital of Finland until 1809, and is still considered to be the cultural focus of Finland. Turku enjoys the splendid status of being Finland’s “official Christmas city” with the traditional Christmas peace blessing being declared from the town square every 24th December at noon. In the summer months, Turku is a lively city with a perfect fusion of historical tradition and contemporary life.

This pretty seaside town has more than an element of chocolate box to it. Narrow cobbled streets flanked by painted wooden cottages and overflowing flower boxes may seem a little twee to the urbanite, but once you let yourself be charmed by its olde-world fairy-tale magic, you will soon fall in love. Rauma also has the happy label of being the largest unified wooden town in the Nordic countries, and has a UNESCO World Heritage badge of honour to prove it. It is also close to 580 years old, making it almost 500 years older than its host country, Finland and the third oldest town in Finland.

Situated in Sea Lapland, in the center of the Bothnian Arc, Kemi offers a combination of the uniqueness of Finnish nature and the small city charm with it’s 21,000 inhabitants. The Swedish boarder being just a short drive away the Kemi area is also a meeting place of two cultures. Since the city was founded in 19th century, Kemi has become one of the most important wood processing industry areas in Finland. Discover Kemi’s inner harbour area, also known as the “living room” of the city where many musical events and festival are taking place.

Believe it or not, but this quiet city where reindeer migrate and the Northern Lights ripple, is a global centre of innovation, technology and education. Close to the Arctic Circle, Facebook chose Lulea as the site for its first data centre outside of the US, praising the city's natural cooling, clean energy, and passion for innovation. The University and Science Park here are experiencing unprecedented demand as a result, and while the future looks bright, the city’s past is just as rich in history.

Feel your feet twitching, as you approach Sundsvall - a place where you can't help but feel an urge to get active. As the main town of the Medelpad region of Norrland, Sundsvall is a fantastic jumping off point for extraordinary outdoor adventures, and sits close to wild national parks, which sweep across the north of the country. Whether you want to relax in the city’s abundant cafes, or hike, bike and swim your way through some of Sweden's most magnificent outdoor offerings, you’ll love exploring Sundsvall.

Stockholm is a city in the flush of its second youth. In the last 15 years Sweden's capital has emerged from its cold, Nordic shadow to take the stage as a truly international city. What started with entry into the European Union in 1995, gained pace with the extraordinary IT boom of the late 1990s (strengthened with the Skype-led IT second-wave of 2003), and solidified with the hedge fund invasion of the mid-nineties continues today. And despite more recent global economic turmoil, which Sweden was able to coast through relatively unscatched, most of Greater Stockholm's 1.
