Local produce here is king of all restaurants and dishes, so whether you chose to dine in one of the top restaurants in the country (try Saltmagasinet Resturang & Bageri, only open in summer) or just chow down on fiska (coffee and cake; a national pastime in Sweden) in a local waterside café, expect delicious food that melts in the mouth.

The Swedes spend much of their time outside – their motto being that there is never any bad weather, only bad clothing, so this is a place to embrace the great outdoors. Starting with the beautiful Vastervik archipelago, take a boat trip, grab a blanket (it can get chilly, even in summer), settle down on the top deck and get ready to see some of the Mother Nature’s finest work. The more adventurous among you might enjoy a kayak tour and a chance to paddle around Hasselö Island, which boasts the grand total of 36 year-round residents! For those preferring to stay on terra firma, experience a slice of Västervik’s medieval life on-foot in the picturesque city and Old Quarter. Not to be missed are the Bronze Museum (with archery, a stone maze and treasure hunts for the young and young at heart), the Candlestick maker, the narrow gauge railway with its working vintage steam engines and 44-mile track.

Archaeologist & Bronze Age District

Explore the Bronze Age with an archaeologist from the Västervik Museum during this panoramic, half-day excursion to Tjustbygden.

Västervik, Tjustbygden, Bronze Age District, Ancient Monuments

Depart the pier with an archaeologist from the Västervik Museum for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive towards the splendid landscape around Tjustbygden. One of the most remarkable areas of Sweden, Tjustbygden features thousands of ancient monuments dating from the Bronze Age.

Cairns, Rock Formations, Rock-Carvings of Ships, Humans, Feet and More

Although it consists of mostly cairns and rock formations, the area is also home to one of the major rock-carving areas in northern Europe. Grave monuments are mostly found up on heights and ridges, and viewed from a distance. They are fascinating to see, and feature rock carvings showing ships, humans, feet and more from thousands of years ago. Your archaeologist/guide interprets the meanings of the carvings you see, and imparts his knowledge about the Bronze Age. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

This tour is not suitable for guests prone to seasickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. The tour sequence may vary. Hasselö was populated in the 1400s, and people have lived here since. Approximately 36 people currently live here year-round, but the population swells to about 500 people during the summer months. The local population once worked primarily in the fishing and agricultural industries; today, tourism, carpentry and service are important sources of income on the islands.
