VALLETTA
VALLETTA

Malta's capital, the minicity of Valletta, has ornate palaces and museums protected by massive fortifications of honey-color limestone. Houses along the narrow streets have overhanging wooden balconies for people-watching from indoors. Generations ago they gave housebound women a window on the world of the street. The main entrance to town is through the City Gate (where all bus routes end), which leads onto Triq Repubblika (Republic Street), the spine of the grid-pattern city and the main shopping street. Triq Mercante (Merchant Street) parallels Repubblika to the east and is also good for strolling. From these two streets, cross streets descend toward the water; some are stepped. Valletta's compactness makes it ideal to explore on foot. City Gate and the upper part of Valletta are experiencing vast redevelopment that includes a new Parliament Building and open-air performance venue. The complex, completed mid-2013, has numerous pedestrian detours in place along with building noise and dust. Before setting out along Republic Street, stop at the tourist information office on Merchant Street for maps and brochures.

Exkursionen in VALLETTA

Spend a day exploring the highlights of Malta during this scenic and informative sightseeing excursion through the city.

Tarxien Temples

Depart the pier for the approximately 20-minute drive to Tarxien, and a visit to the Tarxien Temples. Dating from 3600-2500 B.C., the Tarxien Temples is the most complex of all temple sites in Malta, and consists of four megalithic structures. They are renowned for their detailed carvings, which include domestic animals carved in relief, altars and screens, and decorated with spiral designs and other patterns.

Mdina

Next, re-board your coach and drive to Mdina. Known as the 'Silent City', or 'Citta Notabile', Mdina dates back to Roman times and was the first capital of Malta. Mdina's intriguing and secretive aura is depicted in its narrow, silent streets, where several of Malta's aristocratic old families still reside in stately mansions. A stroll through Mdina takes you to the bastions from which you can admire a stunning vista of Malta's northeast coast.

Mdina Cathedral

A visit is then made to the Mdina Cathedral to see the gilded carvings, ornamental side chapels and paintings that adorn the vault, apse and chapels. Many of the paintings and carvings illustrate scenes from the life of St. Paul; the finest is Mattia Pretti's mural, The Shipwreck of St. Paul, decorating the apse. From here, walk to the Palazzo Falson. This Medieval building houses a spectacular collection of antique paintings, silver, furniture, armour, and more.

Following your visit, stop for lunch at a local restaurant. Re-board your coach and drive back to Valletta for a visit to the Upper Barracca Gardens, which offers a wonderful view of the grand harbour and the 'Three Cities'.

St. John's Co-Cathedral

In the afternoon, take a stroll down the main thoroughfare en route to St. John's Co-Cathedral. Upon arrival, a visit is made inside the church, which is renowned for its striking interior and a staggering collection of Malta's finest art treasures, including Caravaggio's famous work, The Beheading of St. John. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board the coach for the brief return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking on concrete or paved sidewalks, cobblestones and interior tile. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Conservative attire is required to enter St. John's Co-Cathedral and Mdina Cathedral; bare shoulders, bare knees and high-heeled shoes are not permitted inside the churches. St. John's Co-Cathedral is closed on Saturdays afternoon, Sundays and public holidays. On these days, a visit to the Museum of Archaeology will be substituted. Additionally, Palazzo Falson is closed on Mondays and will be substituted with Carmelite Priory instead.

Discover the splendid beauty and filming locales of the popular Game of Thrones series during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

San Anton Gardens and Palace, and Mdina and Mdina Gate

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the San Anton Gardens. Located in Attard, this 16th-century palace is the official residence of the President of Malta, and surrounded by private and public gardens. San Anton Palace has also been featured as a setting in the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones. Following your guided tour, re-board your coach and head to Mdina. The 4,000-year-old capital of Malta, Mdina is a medieval walled town on a hill in the centre of the island, and is known as the 'Silent City'. Mdina and its gorgeous Mdina Gate were also featured in the filming of the Game of Thrones series. During your guided visit, a stop is made at a panoramic viewpoint and some free time is made available to explore your surrounds at your leisure.

Verdala Palace and the Buskett Gardens

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to the Verdala Palace. Since 1987, Verdala Palace has been the official summer residence of the President of Malta, but its origins date back to the 16th century, when it was built on the site of a hunting lodge. The elegant palace is surrounded by the Buskett Gardens, which were used by the Knights of Malta to hunt game, and by Napoleon as a military prison in the 18th century. After a long period of disrepair, the palace was restored and its Buskett Gardens are now open to the public. Following a photo stop here, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 35-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 0.93 miles (about 1.5 kilometres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the Mdina Viewpoint. Walking in Mdina is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Enjoy the beauty of the best gardens in Malta during this half-day tour.

Palazzo Parisio and Gardens

Depart quay and drive to the village of Naxxar. Located in the heart of picturesque Naxxar is Palazzo Pariso, this stately home is a place of wonder that begs to be explored. During your visit, discover the intricate nuances of Malta's historic nobility and their enchanting way of life. Touring this stately home offers great insight and sparks the imagination - whether you find yourself seeking inspiration from the grand Ballroom, the detailed Family Chapel or the fabulous walled Gardens and Orangerie, you'll find it. Refreshments will be served in the Gardens [weather permitting] or indoors.

San Anton Gardens

Following this visit, continue your tour with a drive to the Village of Attard for a visit to the San Anton Gardens.

The Gardens of San Anton, open to the public since 1882, are laid out in a formal manner, with graceful walkways, sculptures, ornamental ponds, families of ducks and swans, and a small aviary. They contain a large variety of trees and flowers from around the world, including a variety of palm trees, cypress, jacarandas, araucarias and other exotic plants, some of them over three centuries old. For many years it has been customary for visiting Heads of State to plant a tree in memory of their stay in Malta. The gardens also contain an orangerie, and it was once the practice of incumbent Governors to give baskets of oranges grown in the palace gardens as gifts at Christmas time.

Upper Barracca Gardens

The Upper Barracca Gardens is a public garden that offers a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour. One of Valletta's most beautiful parks, it was created in 1775 on the bastion of St. Peter and Paul. In the park there are several statues, including one from Sir Winston Churchill, and a sculpture by the Maltese sculptor Antonio Sciortino, entitled The Street Boys. Another prominent feature is the neo-classical temple folly at the centre of the park. The garden was the gift of an eighteenth-century Italian knight. It was originally intended to offer recreation to the knights of the Italian langue, or department, of the Order of Saint John.

It is the highest point of the city walls, and thus its bordering terrace offers a clear view over the Grand Harbour and the old towns of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as over the shipyard and the lower-lying parts the capital. This terrace area features a number of commemorative plaques, dedicated to, amongst others, the Hungarian revolution of 1956, the Prague spring, Giuseppe Garibaldi and the 50th anniversary of the European Union.

Following this visit, re-join your coach for the short drive to the pier and your awaiting ship.

Please note: Tour involves moderate walking (approximately 1.8 km/1.1 miles) with some stairs to negotiate and is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair. We suggest guests wear seasonal clothing, flat, walking shoes and sun protection.

The Three Cities

Left largely unvisited, the Three Cities are a slice of authentic life, and a glimpse into Malta's maritime fortunes and intriguing history. The Three Cities can rightly claim to be the cradle of Maltese history. Enjoy a short walk in Vittoriosa - one of the towns designated 'city' by the Knights of St. John. The atmosphere is steeped in history and intrigue. A profound sense of silence and peacefulness embraces you as you saunter through the streets of ancient houses and dwelling places. Until a short time ago our justifiably famous Valletta Grand Harbour, so often the scene of the madness of war and the courage of men, was crowded with hundreds of boats and water taxis, which plied the harbour creeks on both sides of Valletta. These were largely used to ferry passengers, especially sailors, from their ships to land, and vice versa. These colourful Maltese boats are referred to as Dghajsa or Luzzu and are also used for fishing, these days often fitted with an inboard engine.

Casa Rocca Piccola

See a collection of furniture, silver and paintings that add to the aesthetic richness of this country. Tea, coffee and fresh cannoli will be served in the courtyard (weather permitting).

This late 17th century masterpiece has been decorated by Il Calabrese (Mattia Preti), amongst other Italian artists. Its imposing facade greets you abruptly as you emerge from Mdina's narrow streets. The building is topped with a magnificent dome, which dominates the skyline of Mdina.

Valletta's Hidden Gems

Upper Barracca Gardens

Begin this scenic tour by boarding your minibus for an approximate transfer of 15 minutes to Valletta, Malta's capital city. A walk up to the Upper Barracca Gardens offers expansive views of the Grand Harbour and the 'Three Cities.'

St. Paul's Shipwreck Church

Next, walk to St. Paul's Shipwreck Church for a visit to one of Valletta's oldest churches. St. Paul is considered to be the spiritual father of the Maltese. His shipwreck is popularly considered as the greatest event in the nation's history. The church hosts fine artistic work, the treasured relic of the right wrist-bone of St. Paul, and part of the column on which the saint was beheaded in Rome.

Manoel Theatre (see note below)

Proceed to the fabulous Manoel Theatre and its accompanying museum, which is said to be the oldest theatre in Europe still functioning within its original structure. Built under the direction of Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena in 1731, this magnificent building, with its 22-carat gilded ceiling, hosts numerous performances and exhibitions every year. It was originally intended to be used as an all-purpose theatre staging tragedies, religious plays, comedies, cantatas and operas. Today you can again marvel at the Manoel in all its restored glory. It is decorated with antiques taken from the auberges and Viennese chandeliers; an excellent setting for the classical concerts and lectures that now takes place here.

After your tour of the theatre, enjoy some free time and have the opportunity to stroll down the main promenade of the city. Re-board the minibus for the brief return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking (approximately 1.4 km/0.85 miles) over uneven surfaces with approximately 15 steps to manage. Conservative attire is required and stilettos or high-heels are not allowed inside churches. A minimum number of guests per guide is required to operate this programme.
