BEIJING (Tianjin)

Beijing is a vibrant jumble of neighborhoods and districts. It's a city that was transformed almost overnight in preparation for the 2008 Olympics, often leveling lively old hutongs (alleyway neighborhoods) to make way for the glittering towers that are fast dwarfing their surroundings. Still, day-to-day life seems to pulse the lifeblood of a Beijing that once was. Hidden behind Beijing's pressing search for modernity is an intriguing historic core. Many of the city's ancient sites were built under the Mongols during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). View more

A number of the capital's imperial palaces, halls of power, mansions, and temples were rebuilt and refurbished during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Despite the ravages of time and the Cultural Revolution, most sites are in good shape, from the Niujie Mosque, with Koranic verse curled around its arches, to Tiananmen Square, the bold brainchild of Mao Zedong.

Forbidden City

Enter through the great gate into the vast complex that has been off limits to the public for over 500 years. Within its walls lies a maze of some 800 palaces built between 1417 and 1420 as the residence of the imperial clan. The 9,000 rooms require a permanent restoration squad that is constantly busy painting and repairing. Feast your eyes on the elaborate architecture, décor and furnishings that make the Palace Museum one of the most visited places in the world. (The huge complex requires an extensive amount of walking.)

Tiananmen Square

Next, proceed to Beijing's most famous square and the country's national symbol. The enormous square is dominated by the gigantic portrait of Chairman Mao. Since imperial days, Tiananmen Square has provided an impressive stage for declarations to the assembled masses. It was from the giant gate that Chairman Mao proclaimed the People's Republic on October 1, 1949. In modern times, the flag-raising ceremony has become a revered daily celebration.

Olympic Green

After having lunch of Chinese cuisine at a local restaurant, proceed to the Olympic Green for a short photo stop. View the unique 'Bird's Nest' and the 'Water Cube', Beijing's intriguing new landmark structures erected for the 2008 Olympics.

Leaving Olympic Green, embark the coach and sit back and relax during your journey to the ship.

Please note: An extensive amount of walking is required with over 100 stairs to climb. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in layers. The drive to downtown Beijing is approximately three hours in each direction.

Great Wall of China and sightseeing of Beijing

This excursion gives you the opportunity to get closer to the highlights of Beijing, the Great Wall, the Olympic Green and Tiananmen Square on coach.

A visit to the Great Wall of China presents a fascinating experience. Built along the rolling ridges of steep mountains, it offers spectacular, even awe-inspiring views, and is surely one of humankind's greatest architectural achievements.

Departing from the port of Tianjin, begin your excursion with a scenic journey through the countryside to one of mankind's most impressive creation, the Great Wall. During the journey to the Great Wall's Juyongguan Section, your guide's commentary about the country and its people makes for an interesting drive.

The Great Wall

Nothing quite prepares you for the sight as you approach this part of the Great Wall. Built centuries ago, the wall stretches for over 3,000 miles (4,828 kilometers) and ranks amongst the top wonders of the world. The Juyongguan Section of the Great Wall also enjoys the reputation of being 'The Number One Strategic Pass Under Heaven'. Today, you will have the opportunity to get closer to the Wall and take a photo.

Olympic Green

After having lunch of Chinese cuisine at a local restaurant, proceed to the Olympic Green for a photo stop. Marvel the unique 'Bird's Nest' and the 'Water Cube', Beijing's intriguing new landmark structures erected for the 2008 Olympics.

Tiananmen Square

Before driving back to the ship in the afternoon, drive through the Tian'anmen Square, Beijing's most famous square and the country's national symbol.

Afterwards, return back to the ship by motor coach.

Please note: This tour is subject to a minimum number of participants. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear comfortable walking shoes, dress in layers, and bring a jacket as the wind blowing through the valleys can be cool and the wall is exposed. The drive to the Great Wall is approximately three and a half hours each way.

Highlights of Tianjin

Experience the major points of interests in Tianjin, including Ancient Culture Street, Tianjin Museum and Shi Family Mansion, on this full-day outing to the city.

Tianjin

Departing the port, a 75-minute drive takes you into Tianjin city. Home to nearly six million people, Tianjin boasts an interesting history as a foreign concession. Since the mid-20th century, Tianjin has been a centre of major industrialization and production of a wide range of consumer goods known for their excellent quality.

Upon arrival in Tianjin, a sightseeing drive through the city centre highlights the major points of interest. Its European architecture from the turn of the 20th century gives the impression of an outdoor museum, while new, high-rise buildings of glass and steel puncture the city's skyline.

Next, visit the Ancient Culture Street, an interesting and historically accurate street depicting life in 19th-century Tianjin. Note the splendidly replicated classical architecture in the folk style of the Qing Dynasty. Afterwards, lunch of Chinese cuisine is served at a local hotel restaurant before continuing to the Tianjin Museum. Newly renovated, this state-of-the-art museum not only tells the history of the city of Tianjin, but also has a large collection of arts and crafts treasures.

Shi Family Mansion

Re-board the coach for a drive to the Shi Family Mansion. Built in 1875 and occupying over 19,000 square feet (1,765 sq. metres), this mansion boasts 12 courtyards, each originally with specific functions and now the site for a Folklore Museum. Its brick, wood and stone carvings are among the best in north China.

Finally, the 75-minute drive takes you back to the pier and the ship.

Please note: This tour not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear casual clothing and comfortable walking shores. The driving distance between the pier and Tianjin is approximately 1.25 hours. Space is limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Experience the spectacular beauty, architecture and history of Tianjin during a picturesque, full-day sightseeing excursion to this bustling city.

Tianjin City, Jingyuan Garden and Ancient Culture Street

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 90-minute drive to Tianjin City. Your first stop is at the Jingyuan Garden, or 'Garden of Serenity', the former residence of Puvi, last emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Built in 1921, this lovely garden home has two, two-story Western-style villas as its main buildings. In 2007, a year-long restoration project transformed the residence into a museum about the emperor's life. Next, some free time is made available for a leisurely stroll along Ancient Culture Street. This 600-year-old street is home to a wonderful blend of architectural styles. Along the way, marvel at its classic cultural features, perhaps purchase various folk crafts and sample the delicious local Tianjin snacks.

Lunch and Yangliuqing New Year Painting Museum

After a Chinese lunch at a local restaurant, proceed for a guided tour of the Yangliuqing New Year Painting Museum. The famous, 17th-century knives, wood plates and woodcarving paintings displayed here reflected the local citizenry's hopes for a better life amidst a turbulent society. The early paintings gradually formed their own characters with an auspicious festive tone, and today, locals decorate their homes with Yangliuqing New Year paintings ahead of the Chinese Lunar New Year. During your visit, marvel at the beautiful artwork and observe a local artisan make the painting using wood plates.

Five Avenue Area and Former Mansion of Prince Qing

Next, re-board your coach for a drive through the Five Avenue Area. A Tianjin icon and showcase of modern Chinese history, this historical area features more than 2,000 garden buildings constructed in various architectural styles during the 1920s and 1930s. Your final stop is at the Former Mansion of Prince Qing. Renowned for its exquisite blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles, the main building of the mansion still maintains its original appearance. Following your guided tour, relax with a Chinese afternoon tea served with snacks at the mansion's bistro. Time permitting, visit the Prince Qing Mansion History Exhibition, then re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately one mile (1.6 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 20 steps at the Jingyuan Garden and steps at the sights visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

Upon arrival in the capital of the People's Republic of China, transfer to a five-star hotel for a buffet lunch.

Beijing, Forbidden City, City Walls, Palaces

After lunch, proceed to the legendary Forbidden City. Off-limits to the public for 500 years, the vast complex of this UNESCO World Heritage Site was opened in 1949 as the Palace Museum. Within its walls lies a maze of palaces built between 1417 and 1420 as the residence of China's emperors. With some 800 buildings and 9,000 rooms, maintenance and restoration are an ongoing process.

Tiananmen Square

Next, proceed for a visit to Beijing's national symbol, Tiananmen Square. Known as the 'Gate of Heavenly Peace', the square is dominated by a gigantic portrait of Chairman Mao. Since Imperial times, Tiananmen Square has always provided an impressive stage for declarations and key events in local history. In modern times, the solemn flag-raising ceremony has become a revered daily celebration. It was from the giant gate that Chairman Mao proclaimed the People's Republic on October 1, 1949.

Leaving Tiananmen Square, drive to the Four Seasons Hotel for check-in. The hotel features luxury accommodations, as well as fine dining venues. After check-in, the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure.

Dinner is at one of the hotel's three restaurants of your choice; Cai Yi Xuan (Chinese), Opus (Western) or Mio (Western).

Overnight at the Four Seasons Hotel - Beijing.

DAY TWO - Beijing/Great Wall/Cable Car-Ride

After breakfast and check-out, depart for a scenic, approximately two-hour drive from Beijing to the Great Wall of China. With portions dating back nearly 2,000 years and an overall length of approximately 3,000 miles (about 4,828 kilometres), this spectacular structure remains a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Chinese people, thus earning its designation as one the 'New Seven Wonders of the World'. Upon arrival, a roundtrip cable car-ride (weather permitting) provides a leisurely and less-strenuous way to take in the stunning scenery and beauty of the Great Wall of China.

Following your visit, proceed to a local restaurant for a Chinese-style lunch, then re-board your coach and head back to Beijing. En route, pass the Olympic Park for a splendid view of the 'Bird's Nest' and 'Water Cube', the striking landmark structures built for the 2008 Olympics.

Next, discover vestiges of Old Beijing away from the bustling city during a pedi-cab trip through the narrow alleyways of the Hutong District, where only the awning-covered vehicles and bicycles can manoeuvre. Some of these neighbourhoods date back to the Qing Dynasty, and residents still maintain a traditional lifestyle within walled courtyards. Visit a local home for a behind-the-scenes look at daily life in Old Beijing. At the conclusion of your tour of Old Beijing, re-board your coach and return to the hotel. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure.

Dinner is on your own this evening.

Overnight accommodation at the Four Seasons Hotel - Beijing.

DAY THREE - Beijing/Xian

After breakfast and check out, depart the hotel and transfer to Summer Palace, located approximately 7.4 miles (about 12 kilometres) northwest of the downtown area. The Summer Palace is home to the largest Imperial garden in the world, and a veritable museum of classical Chinese garden architecture.

The initial construction of the Summer Palace began in 1750, commissioned by Emperor Qianlong as a gift for his mother's birthday. The construction took 15 years to complete. At the time, it was named 'Qingyi Yuan' (Garden of Clear Ripples). Plundering by foreign troops in 1860 destroyed most of the buildings; however, in 1888, Empress Dowager Cixi embezzled funds from the Imperial Navy to renovate the garden.

After a Chinese-style lunch at a local restaurant, transfer to Beijing's Capital Airport for an afternoon flight to Xian, home of the famed Terra Cotta Warriors.

Upon arrival at Xian Airport, you are met and transferred via coach to downtown Xian for a visit to one of the city's landmark, the ancient City Wall. Its height of approximately 39 feet (about 12 meters) and length of nearly nine miles (about 14 kilometres) may explain why the massive City Wall is considered the most complete fortified structure still standing today. Following your visit, transfer to the deluxe Wyndham Grand Xian South for check-in.

A buffet dinner is at the hotel.

Overnight at the Wyndham Grand Xian South - Xian.

DAY FOUR - Xian/Museum of the Terra Cotta Warriors

After breakfast, drive to Xian's most famous attraction, the museum that houses one of China's supreme treasures, an army of a life-sized funeral honour guard. Nothing prepares you for the amazing sight of this stunningly well-preserved, life-size honour guard standing in ranks near the tomb of Emperor Ch'in Shih Huang-ti, who died in 210 B.C.

The soldiers were first discovered in 1974 by a local farmer who was digging a well. So far, three vaults have been excavated; the first contains more than 6,000 men and horses arranged in an imposing formation. Every soldier differs in facial features and expressions, and most carry actual weapons of the day. The find is regarded by many as the most sensational archaeological discovery of the 20th century. A protective hangar constructed over them now comprises the Museum of the Terra Cotta Warriors. Time permitting, you can view a stunning audio-visual show in a separate building, and browse shops offering a wide array of souvenir items.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda/Tang Dynasty Show

Following your visit, re-board your coach and proceed for lunch at local restaurant. After lunch, transfer to the downtown area for a visit to the city's major attraction, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. This 1,300-year-old structure from the golden days of the Tang Dynasty has long been the hallmark of Xian. The pagoda, along with the Drum Tower and Bell Tower, are part of the Buddhist Temple of Grace complex located in the centre of Xian.

Leaving the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, re-board your coach and return to the hotel to freshen up before departing for a dumpling dinner and cultural Tang Dynasty Show at a local restaurant. This wonderful performance of classical entertainment depicts a variety of historical relics, and offers a unique insight and keeps alive the splendid culture of the ancient Tang Dynasty.

Overnight at the Wyndham Grand Xian South - Xian.

DAY FIVE - Xian/Shanghai

After breakfast at the hotel and check out, transfer to the Xian Airport for your approximately two-hour flight to Shanghai. Upon arrival in Shanghai, transfer to a local restaurant for a Chinese-style lunch. After lunch, a visit is made to the 16th-century Yu Yuan Garden. This cultivated oasis captures the essence of the landscape art and architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It has also served as the inspiration for the famous willow-pattern chinaware. High walls adorned with huge, stone dragons shelter teahouses, pavilions, rockeries and carp ponds. Make your way back to the coach by way of a small lake, which is spanned by a picturesque zigzag bridge.

Leaving the Yu Yuan Garden, transfer to the pier in Shanghai and embark the ship.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 6.2 miles (about ten kilometres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, board/de-board the high-speed train and airplane, and 220 steps at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The tour sequence and itinerary are subject to change.

Discover the highlights of fascinating Beijing, the 'Forbidden City' and legendary Great Wall of China, one of the 'Seven Wonders of the New World', during this unforgettable overnight visit to the Chinese capital.

DAY ONE - Tianjin/Beijing

Upon disembarking the ship at Tianjin International Cruise Home Port, transfer to the Tianjin Train Station and commence your overnight excursion to Beijing with a 30-minute ride on the high-speed train.

With some 800 buildings and 9,000 rooms, maintenance and restoration are an on-going process.

The hotel features luxury accommodations as well as fine dining venues. After check-in, the rest of the afternoon is at your leisure.

Dinner is at one of the hotel's three restaurants of your choice; Cai Yi Xuan (Chinese), Opus (Western) or Mio (Western).

Overnight at the Four Seasons Hotel - Beijing.

DAY TWO - Beijing/Great Wall/Tianjin

After breakfast and check-out, depart for a scenic, approximately two-hour drive from Beijing to the Great Wall of China. En route, pass the Olympic Park for a splendid view of the 'Bird's Nest' and 'Water Cube', the striking landmark structures built for the 2008 Olympics.

The Great Wall of China, Cable Car-Ride

With portions dating back nearly 2,000 years and an overall length of approximately 3,000 miles (about 4,828 kilometres), this spectacular structure remains a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Chinese people, thus earning its designation as one the 'New Seven Wonders of the World'. Upon arrival, a roundtrip cable car-ride (weather permitting) provides a leisurely and less-strenuous way to take in the stunning scenery and beauty of the Great Wall of China.

Following your visit, proceed to a local restaurant for a Chinese-style lunch. After lunch, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 3.5-hour drive back to Tianjin. Upon arrival at the Tianjin International Cruise Home Port, embark the ship.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 2.5 miles (about four kilometres), at time over uneven and cobblestone surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and board/de-board the coach, and 150 steps at the sites visited. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. The tour sequence and itinerary are subject to change.
