Exkursionen in St Florent, Corsica

Boasting one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world, with ruins, cliffs and beautiful views of rolling hills that meet the sea, Cap Corse is a must-see destination that is also still a thriving, living region, where people live primarily from the fishing and agriculture they do. Tour Cap Corse and discover a mountain in the sea, sweet little bays, sea resorts, and villages made of green and grey stones perched at the top of Corsica's many steep hills. This is a five-hour tour that balances driving with visiting these scenic, memorable places.

Cap Corse was cut off from much of the rest of Corsica until the end of the 19th century, when Napoleon III ordered the rebuilding of a coach road that connected Cap Corse's long peninsula with the rest of the island. Cap Corse has preserved its wild, Corsican landscape and is a favourite of locals and visitors alike.

Depart the pier and drive an hour and fifteen minutes of scenic driving to Erbalunga, a romantic and beautiful marina. Drive through the small marinas of Sisco, Pietracorbara, Porticciolo. Leave the coast for a short drive in the mountain in the direction of Luri, and join the west side of the Cap Corse in Pino. Enjoy the sweeping view of the green hills and the deep blue sea.

Drive next to Nonza for a stop to see how it was built on a black rocky pinnacle dropping vertically into the sea. Go for a little walk to the famous square tower, an ancient fortress tower looming above and reached by a winding staircase of stone steps that seem to jump out of a fairytale.

On your return drive pass Patrimonio, one of the most reputed place in Corsica regarding wine production. Return to the ship.

Please note: This itinerary is subject to change and the order of sites visited may vary. This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, approximately 2km and some terrain that those with mobility limitations may find strenuous, including a short natural trail to see the view at Notre Dame de la Serra. As there are no elevators or wheelchair lifts this tour is not accessible for wheelchairs and may not be suitable for those with limited mobility unless they bring a travel companion to assist in the more strenuous portions of the tour. Unfortunately, the tour operator is unable to accommodate motorized wheelchairs or scooters. Passengers are advised that the scenic portion of the itinerary include some narrow, winding roads, therefore is not recommended to passengers who suffer from vertigo and motion sickness. Guests must be able to get on and off the coach on their own. While the minimum age to participate is 10, children must be accompanied by an adult and this tour is generally not geared for children unless they have an interest in culture and history. Bring cash if you would like the option to purchase any beverages. Only guests purchasing a beverage may use the toilet facilities in Erbalunga and Nonza. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress comfortably according to the weather, bringing a light jacket if necessary. Space on this tour is somewhat limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Hike with Corsican Spuntinu

Take a vigorous hike to Fornali Cove, offering views of the 16th century ruins of the Genoese Mortella Tower, nearly half of which appears to have been taken by the sea over time, but was in fact taken at once by the British in the 18th century.

While there is a popular walking path that leads from St. Florent to the tower, this is a 4.5-hour hike in each direction. However, a lighter version of the hike that you are taking today offers a great view of Mortella and a chance to visit the Genoese tower and lighthouse at Fornali Cove. Expect a 2-mile walk in each direction with a break at the midpoint, for a total of 4.5 hours of hiking.

Mortella Tower

The Mortella Tower is full of Corsican history that began in fact with Italians, who built this still-impressive tower in the mid-16th century to protect the region against Barbary pirate attacks. It played an important role in later years when the French overtook Corsica. As the British withdrew in 1796, the blew up Mortella Tower, leaving it in its current state of ruins.

Fornali Tower

Earn a splendid view of the tower as a result of your hike to Fornali Cove. Note the exceptional view over the Gulf of Saint-Florent from the Fornali Tower. This tower, the Torra di Fornali was part of the defence system built to protect Saint Florent. Ten such towers were planned, but not all of them were built, and of those that were, none of them have been restored.

Make your hike back to return to the ship.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking, a total of up to 14km, with the walking distributed over three stops each with a moderate walk over paved and unpaved, natural surfaces. Because of the significant amount of walking and the lack of wheelchair access, this tour is not suitable for guests with mobility limitations. Unfortunately, the tour operator is unable to accommodate motorized wheelchairs or scooters. Guests must be able to get on and off the coach on their own. While the minimum age to participate is 10, children must be accompanied by an adult and this tour is not geared for children. Bring cash if you would like the option to purchase any beverages. Guests are required to wear appropriate walking or hiking shoes and should dress comfortably according to the weather, bringing a windbreaker, hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Space on this tour is somewhat limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Nebbio Wine Taste and Bastia Walk

Visit Nebbio, a region of Corsica located inland from Saint Florent. Arriving, you find a place filled with rolling, rocky hills with water in sight and beautifully built, ancient architecture set amidst this lovely, wildish and rugged landscape. The name Nebbio is derived from the Corsican word nebbia, which means "mist," for its haze of dew often seen in this region during winter.

Thanks in part to these mists, Nebbio is a very fertile part of the island, making it ideal for winemaking and other agriculture. Today, enjoy these fruits and the charms of the region with a visit to Bastia and Patrimonio for a tour filled with culture, nature and of course, wine.

Drive one hour through Nebbio towards Bastia, with panoramic views down the St. Florent gulf and the Patrimonio's vineyards to one side and the Tyrrhenian Sea to the other.

Bastia

Full of unique charm and nestled between the sea and the mountains, Bastia is the second-busiest passenger port in France and the second-largest city on Corsica. Bastia is considered the main town of north Corsica and was once the capital of the entire island under Genoese government. Its former wealth lay in its fertile lands that allow for the growth of vineyards, olive tree farms and chestnut tree plantations.

Enjoy 90 minutes to tour Bastia to discover the old town and the proud citadel, the cathedral Ste Marie, the governor palace and the old port. Discover the city's fascinating history as you walk its narrow streets. Take a moment watching people come and go at the St Nicolas square, the central meeting point of the city.

Pass the Terra Vecchia towards the old port through irregularly-paved streets, passing nice little chapels and oratorio in baroque style like the Oratoire St Roch, arriving at the church St Jean Baptiste famous for its twin campaniles. Then drive through the Terra Nova, which includes the citadel, with the square Du Donjon, and the impressive 14th century Palais des Gouverneur.

Take time to walk and breathe in the charm of Bastia, taking care not to miss the Jardin Romeiu, an 18th century garden set into a terraced cliff. Also walk through its charming old port that resembles a seaside Venice, with its tall, narrow buildings, different for its old port feel and coloured fishing boats. Reboard the coach to make the 45-minute drive to Patrimonio.

Patrimonio

The name Patrimonio is synonymous with delicious wine, which you have the chance to discover on this second half of your excursion. As you enter Patrimonio see the iconic 16th century church of St-Martin, nestled in the hills and visible for miles around as it is set against the rich green vineyards.

In 1968, Patrimonio was established as Corsica's first Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC). Today, Corsica has nine AOC regions including the island-wide designation Vin de Corse AOC. The majority of the wine exported from Corsica falls under the Vin de pays designation Vin de Pays de l'Île de Beauté (Country wine from the Island of Beauty). The three leading grape varieties of the region are Nielluccio, known as the spice wine of France, Sciacarello and Vermentino.

Enjoy a tasting and some snacks in a lovely setting before making your return 20-minute drive to port.

Please note: This itinerary is subject to change and the order of sites visited may vary. This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, approximately 2km and some terrain that those with mobility limitations may find strenuous, with a number of steps and cobblestones throughout Bastia. Guests must be able to get on and off the coach on their own. While the minimum age to participate is 10, children must be accompanied by an adult and this tour with a wine tasting is not geared for children. Bring cash if you would like the option to purchase any beverages. Only guests purchasing a beverage may use the toilet facility at the Bastia venue. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress comfortably according to the weather, bringing a light jacket if necessary. Space on this tour is somewhat limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
