Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach Sao Tome

Sao Tome

São Tomé seems to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is palpably luxury and it is an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea, air and fantastically abundant vegetation. São Tomé and Príncipe is a Portuguese-speaking island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Africa. View more

It consists of two islands: São Tomé and Príncipe, located about 87 miles (140 kilometres) apart and about 155 and 140 miles (250 and 225 kilometres), respectively, off the northwestern coast of Gabon. Both islands are part of an extinct volcanic mountain range. São Tomé, the sizable southern island, is situated just north of the equator. It was named in honour of Saint Thomas by Portuguese explorers who happened to arrive at the island on his feast day. São Toméan culture is a mixture of African and Portuguese influences. São Toméans are known for ússua and socopé rhythms, while Principe is home to the dêxa beat. Portuguese ballroom dancing may have played an integral part in the development of these rhythms and their associated dances. Tchiloli is a musical dance performance that tells a dramatic story. The danço-congo is similarly a combination of music, dance and theatre.

Coffee Plantation Experience

Discover the coffee plantations of São Tomé and learn how coffee is produced during this half-day sightseeing excursion.

Monte Café Plantation

Depart the pier for the scenic drive to the Monte Café Plantation. Located at a height of 2,480 feet (about 756 metres), and approximately 2,133 feet (about 650 metres) at its entrance, the plantation has a climate that's adequate for the cultivation of coffee. Upon arrival, take a guided tour to learn about coffee production, transformation, taste, smell, and quality.

Bombaim Plantation

Next, re-board your coach and proceed to the Bombaim Plantation, which is surrounded by mountains, stunning vistas and the fresh air of 'Obo' Natural Park. It is also the only place in São Tomé Island where it is possible to find 'mangustão', a rare fruit that was brought over from India by the Portuguese. Vanilla is also cultivated in the shadows of this plantation, a unique characteristic required for its development. Here you will enjoy a banana tasting as well as some light snacks while you enjoy some free time.

Bombaim Waterfalls & Church

Your tour continues with a stop to take in the beauty and serenity of the Bombaim Waterfalls, followed by another stop at the local church to hear a performance by one of the most famous choirs on the island.

Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking over uneven natural terrain that is muddy at times, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, four-eight stone steps leading up from the tender boat to pier, and 20 steps at the church. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear comfortable, lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants, sturdy, closed-toe walking/hiking shoes and sun protection, and bring insect repellent from the ship.
