Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach SAFAGA (Luxor)

SAFAGA (Luxor)

Port Safago has been undergoing a transformation, slowly metamorphosing into a holiday rsort. Like other cities on the Red Sea, the commercial port town sits close to great offshore dive sites. Unlike others, however, tourist development hasn't taken off in a meaningful way. But if the mass tourism in Hurghada is a turnoff, Safaga offers a small-scale and much more low-key alternative, though the best dive sites can still be seen on a day trip from Hurghada. View more

Safaga is also the closest beach resort to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, which lies 200 km (124 mi) to the southwest; when cruise ships offer land excursions to Luxor, they often do so through Safaga.

DAY ONE - Safaga / Luxor

Depart the ship at Safaga port, and commence your two-day excursion travelling through the Eastern Desert and Nile valley to Luxor.

At the end of your 3.5-hour drive, refresh yourself with a buffet-style lunch at a deluxe restaurant. Afterward, head to outskirts of Luxor and visit the Temple of Karnak. This grand temple was built, enlarged and decorated over a period of nearly 1,500 years. It was the most important sanctuary of the cult that worshipped the sun god Ra-Amun. The entrance and main axis is the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes which leads to the first Pylon and into the Great Court. This is the largest single area of the Karnak complex, highlighted by 134 huge columns. Your visit will cover the most important parts of this magnificent temple.

Leaving Karnak, drive back to town for your visit to the Temple of Luxor located in the centre of town. The sheer grandeur of this temple and its excellent state of preservation never fails to amaze visitors. The original temple was built on the site of an older sanctuary. Over the centuries, various rulers made additions to the site. Ramses II added a statue of himself and two obelisks; one of them stands today in Paris. The visit of the temple site is approximately one hour.

At the conclusion of your visit, check-in to your hotel. Spend the remaining afternoon at leisure or shopping with your guide. An optional Sound & Light Show (in English) is available at the Temple of Karnak.

Buffet dinner will be available at your leisure at the hotel between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

The charge is $30 per person and includes roundtrip transfers from and to the hotel. Charges will be added to your onboard account. The use of camera and video camera is free of charges.

Overnight at the Sonesta Luxor Hotel (or similar) - Luxor, Egypt

DAY TWO - Valley of the Kings / Luxor / Safaga

Optional: An early morning hot-air balloon ride over Luxor ($200 per person) may be booked and paid for directly at the balloon company desk in the hotel lobby, subject to availability and wind conditions. A representative from the balloon company will be available at hotel reception from 6:00 - 6:30 pm for guests who wish to participate. Pick up time is usually between 4:30 - 5:00 am with an expected return to your hotel at 7:30. Please inform the Silver Shore Concierge Desk on board or your local guide if you are participating in this optional excursion.

After breakfast, depart the hotel for the drive to the Valley of the Kings, located on the Nile's west bank. In this remote area lies the Necropolis of ancient Thebes where the tombs of the great Pharaohs were cleverly concealed deep inside the barren cliffs. From the coach parking area, it is about a 15-minute walk to the site of the tombs, or you can ride a miniature tram.

Leave the Valley of the Kings and, after a short drive, a photo stop is made at the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, one of Egypt's finest and most striking monuments. This extraordinary structure, dedicated to Egypt's only female pharaoh, rises out of the desert plain in a series of terraces backed by an impressive mountain range.

From here, proceed next to the site of Medinet Habu. Considered another great highlight, this magnificent temple complex of Ramses III, Egypt's last great pharaoh, is the best-preserved of all mortuary temples in Thebes. Medinet Habu boasts 75,350 square feet (22,967 square metres) of decorated surfaces across its walls. The imposing outer pylons are decorated with colossal images of important battle scenes and the victors disposing of captured enemies.

On your drive back, pause at the Colossi of Memnon standing forlornly in an empty field. These two gigantic statues are all that remains of the Temple of Amenhotep III. After a photo stop, continue across the Nile to the hotel for buffet lunch. Afterward, commence the return journey to Safaga and the ship.

Please note: The tour sequence may vary. All sites require extensive walking. At the Valley of the Kings, entrance to the tombs requires negotiating sloping pathways and a series of steps. Guides are only allowed to provide commentary outside the tombs. Guests are advised to wear lightweight clothing with comfortable, rubber-soled walking shoes. As most sites visited are sandy and dusty, we recommend to avoid wearing open-toed sandals. Remember to carry sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a sweater for the evening and to bring your camera.

Programme Includes:

· One-night stay at the Sonesta Luxor Hotel (or similar) - Luxor

· One breakfast, two lunches and one dinner (lunch and dinner include two drinks, with a choice of local beer, wine, soft drink, coffee or tea)

· All sightseeing and transfers as per itinerary
