RHODES ISLAND

Early travelers described Rhodes as a town of two parts: a castle or high town (Collachium) and a lower city. Today Rhodes town—sometimes referred to as Ródos town—is still a city of two parts: the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site that incorporates the high town and lower city, and the modern metropolis, or New Town, spreading away from the walls that encircle the Old Town. The narrow streets of the Old Town are for the most part closed to cars and are lined with Orthodox and Catholic churches, Turkish houses (some of which follow the ancient orthogonal plan), and medieval public buildings with exterior staircases and facades elegantly constructed of well-cut limestone from Lindos. Careful reconstruction in recent years has enhanced the harmonious effect.

Exkursionen in RHODES ISLAND

Watch the history of Greece unfold during this picturesque and informative, full-day excursion to Rhodes and Lindos.

Lindos

Depart the pier in Rhodes for the scenic, approximate one-hour, 30-mile (48-kilometre) drive to Lindos via St. Paul's Bay. En route, pass by picturesque villages and a landscape dotted with citrus groves, vineyards and gnarled olive trees. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour through the narrow, cobblestone streets of this ancient Doric village, then proceed up a long, narrow, path measuring approximately 950-feet (290-metres) en route to the summit of the Acropolis.

Acropolis & Lunch

Perched on a bluff overlooking a village of whitewashed houses, narrow streets and souvenir shops, the Acropolis offers a splendid view of St. Paul's Bay. The top of the Acropolis is accessed via a steep flight of stairs. Here, see the magnificent remains of past civilisations, including the 4th-century B.C. Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, a double-winged portico, a Byzantine church and the fortifications of the Knights, including the remains of the Governor's quarters.

Your tour continues to a seaside venue on the shores of Kolymbia Bay. After lunch, your tour continues to the Old town of Rhodes.

Rhodes Old Town

Upon arrival, leave your coach and take a guided walking tour through the streets of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, and visit the Palace of the Grand Masters. Following your tour, some free time is made available to explore the Old Town at your leisure before re-boarding your coach for the brief return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking on cobblestone streets and uphill areas, with many steps to negotiate. A walk of approximately ten minutes may be required to reach the village from the coach parking area; its centre allows only pedestrian and donkey-borne traffic. The 195 steps to the fortress have no railing. Although it is not suggested, guests may opt to take at their own risk a donkey ride (subject to availability) uphill to access the Acropolis of Lindos. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight clothing and bring sun protection. The tour sequence may vary to avoid overcrowding. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages.

Discover the wonderful highlights of Rhodes during this picturesque, half-day walking tour through the historic Old Town.

Scenic Drive and Grand Masters Palace

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 30-minute drive to Rhodes. En route, pass by the old port of Mandraki, and stop for photos at Agios Stefanos, which offers lovely views over the Bay of Rhodes. Upon arrival in Rhodes, enter the Old Town from D'Amboise Gate, the closest point to the Palace of the Grand Masters. A visit is then made to the palace, which served as a wartime fortress, a peacetime residence for the Grand Master and a meeting place for senior knights.

Old City Walking Tour

Next, take a guided walking tour along the cobblestone streets of the Avenue of the Knights, where the knights once lived. To this day, the street exudes a noble and forbidden aura; its lofty buildings stretch in a 1,968-foot-long (600-metre-long) unbroken wall of honey-coloured stone blocks, and its flat façade is punctuated by huge doorways and arched windows.

Archaeological Museum

A visit is then made to the Archaeological Museum, which is housed in the 15th-century Knights Hospital. Here, see many artefacts and exquisite statues dating back as far as the 4th century B.C. The most famous exhibit in the museum is the parian marble statue, the Aphrodite of Rhodes. At the conclusion of your tour, you may opt to re-board the coach for the brief drive back to the pier, or remain in town for further exploration and return to the ship on your own.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.5 miles (about 0.8 kilometres) on cobblestone streets, with approximately 50 steps to negotiate at the Palace of the Grand Masters. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight clothing and bring sun protection.

Old Town of Rhodes & Brunch

Get the real, authentic Rhodes experience by exploring it on foot. Follow in the footsteps of knights on a guided stroll through the stunning historic town of Rhodes.

Old Town of Rhodes Walking Tour

Depart the pier on foot and begin your walk in the picturesque Old Town, passing through breathtaking turreted gateways. Visit the Agora and Collachium, where the knights of St. John of Jerusalem lived and worked. Admire the stunning well-preserved churches, inns, and the exquisite Jewish Quarter. See marble coat of arms of the knights, cannon balls, and the Inns of the Knights. The most impressive building is the restored Palace of the Grand Masters. Learn about its 14th century origins before walking down the Street of Knights paved with incredible marble and mosaics. Pass by the Hospital of Knights museum and learn more about Rhodes's rich history. Rhodes is best experienced on foot and this journey offers wonderful views of the Old Town. Exploring Rhodes on foot will inevitably leave a lasting impression on you.

Traditional Greek Brunch

After your guided walk proceed to Auvergne Cafe located in the square right in the medieval town. Its grounds date back to 1507 and it includes a wonderful inner yard with a 100 year old tree in the middle. Its picturesque and tranquil environment will enchant you.

After your delicious brunch, you may opt to remain in town for further exploration and return to the ship on your own or join your guide for a short walk back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking on cobblestone streets. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight clothing and bring sun protection.

Explore some of the most scenic and historic sites in Rhodes during this half-day sightseeing excursion to Mt. Philerimos and Lindos.

Mt. Philerimos

Depart the pier for the approximate 9.3-mile (about 15-kilometres) drive along the west coast of the island, then turn inland and ascend the winding road to the approximately 1,000-foot (about 304-metres) plateau of Mt. Philerimos. Upon arrival, take in spectacular views over Rhodes and see the restored Church of Our Lady, the Monastery and barrel-vaulted Church of St. George.

Lindos

Next, re-board your coach for the drive to Lindos. En route, pass by picturesque villages and a landscape dotted with citrus groves, vineyards and gnarled olive trees. During a one-hour stop here, see the narrow, cobblestone streets of this ancient Doric village, and the spectacular Acropolis of Lindos in the distance.

Kolymbia Bay and Monte Smith

Leaving Lindos, a brief refreshment stop is made at Kolymbia Bay before commencing the approximate one-hour drive back to the pier. En route, pass by Monte Smith for splendid vistas overlooking Rhodes, the castle, and the coast of Turkey and nearby islands.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, some of which is on cobblestone streets, and is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair; however, guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach via the bus steps. Guests are suggested to wear light-weight clothing and bring sun protection.

Rhodian Pottery Workshop

Learn the ancient art of Rhodian pottery making during this half-day tour.

Enjoy a one-hour panoramic drive of the new town of Rhodes to Mount Smith, passing the Temple of Apollo and Ancient Stadium and then onto Afandou where the Bonis Ceramic Workshop is located. Upon arrival at the workshop, each guest will be given a special apron and a general introduction on the art of ceramics. Simultaneously, this will be done by a demonstration on the pottery wheel by the instructor.

All the guests, in groups of 3, will then be given the opportunity to make their own vase pottery under the guidance of the instructor, using the pottery wheel. After this, the guests will then be able to carve a design of their choice on a raw plate provided by the workshop.

These, the vase and plate, will then be baked and colored by the ceramic technicians, and in turn, at a later date be sent to each guests' home. There will be ample time after the pottery lesson for the guests to browse through the Ceramic Workshop's exhibition to admire the beautiful Rhodian Ceramics on display while enjoying a glass of ouzo with local snacks.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking and is suitable for guests with limited mobility; however it is not wheelchair accessible. Guests must be able to negotiate a few steps at the pottery shop. We suggest guests dress in seasonal clothing and wear comfortable walking shoes. All guests will be required to fill in a form with their home address so that their pottery can be sent to them. Beverages, such as ouzo or water, will be served to the guests during their stay at the workshop. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

The Art of Greek Cuisine

Enjoy a lesson in Greek cooking during this half-day culinary tour.

Departing from the port, enjoy a one-hour panoramic tour of the new town passing by Mandraki, then onto Mount Smith for a short stop at the Temple of Apollo and the Ancient Stadium, ending up at the tavern POLLONIATISSA where the cooking lesson will take place.

Cooking Lesson and Lunch

Upon arrival, each guest will be given a cooking post with all the utensils and ingredients needed to create your dish; the chef will guide you step by step through the cooking process of a traditional Greek dish. Learn how to mix and season the dishes to achieve the best Greek flavours. At the end of the lesson, sit down with your fellow classmates to enjoy the meal you have just prepared.

Afterwards a short drive will take you from the restaurant back to the port.

Please note: This involves a minimal amount of walking and is suitable for guests with limited mobility; however it is not wheelchair accessible. We suggest guests wear seasonal clothing and comfortable shoes. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Tsambika Beach Break

Take a break from the ancient Greek sites and enjoy the beach views on this half-day beach transfer.

Tsambika is one of the most beautiful beaches on Rhodes. A long, broad beach with fine, golden sand and emerald crystal-clear water will offer you the perfect opportunity to relax. One can also admire the imposing rock with the Monastery of the Virgin of Tsambika, from which the beach has taken its name. The virgin of Tsambika is said to work miracles and young woman having difficulty in conceiving often pray for her aid. If their prayers are answered, they name the child after the Virgin.

Depart the pier in your air-conditioned transfer ride to the beach. Upon arrival, present the voucher you are provided to the beach cantina for your sun bed and included refreshment. After approximately 3 hours on the beach, re-join your coach at the appointed place and time for the return transfer to the pier.

Please note: Tour involves minimal walking; however guests must be able to walk through the sand to their sunbeds and local facilities (a walk from the parking area to the beach is approximately 150 meters over sandy and uneven ground). Guests should wear their swimsuit under a cover-up, ample sun protection and bring a towel from the ship. During the summer months, especially July and August the beach gets quite crowded. The sun can get quite strong and high sun protection is recommended. The operation of this programme is weather dependent.
