Siena & San Galgano Abbey

With its narrow streets and steep alleys, a stunning Gothic Duomo, a bounty of early Renaissance art, and the glorious Palazzo Pubblico overlooking its magnificent square, Siena is often described as Italy's best-preserved medieval city. Siena is beautiful: a medieval ensemble of places and towers cast in warm, brown, pastel-colored bricks. Its skyline is its pride - dominated by the gothic Cathedral and the taut needle of the Torre del Mangia - yet the shell shaped Piazza del Campo probably captures the most attention and fame as it has been seen in films, photographs and advertising campaigns.Although much looks as it did in the early 14th century, Siena is no museum. Walk through the streets and you can see that the medieval contrade - 17 neighbourhoods into which the city has been historically divided, are a vibrant part of modern life. You may see symbols of the contrade - Tartuca (turtle), Oca (goose), Istrice (porcupine), Torre (tower) - emblazoned on banners and engraved on building walls. Siena people still strongly identify themselves with the neighbourhood where they were born and raised: loyalty and rivalry run deep. At no time is this more visible than during the centuries-old Palio, a twice-yearly horse race held in the Piazza del Campo, but the rich culture and enchanting aspects of Siena are visible at every step, not only during the wild festival for which it's famous.Your guide will lead a pleasant walk through the medieval streets of Siena, starting from San Domenico till you reach the Cathedral and the iconic Piazza del Campo, where the famous Palio race takes place twice a year. After the guided tour, enjoy a typical Tuscan lunch in one of the best restaurants of Siena before enjoying some free time for shopping and browse on own.Later boarde your coach again to drive back to the Argentario through the beautiful Maremma region boasting a well preserved natural landscape.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking of approximately 2.50 miles (4.0 km) sometimes over cobblestone surfaces, with some steps to negotiate. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend guests wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes as well as bring sun protection.

The Tarots Garden & Capalbio Village

In the Maremma region - Southern Tuscany - is the unique Giardino dei Tarocchi built by internationally famous artist Niki de Saint Phalle in the second half of last century. The Tarot Garden displays some huge and beautiful sculptures by the French artist who depicted the 22 Major Arcana of the Tarots cards. The garden was the result of the wish to express Niki's idea of a "small Eden where man and nature meet each other". She took inspiration from the beautiful Park G?ell by Antoni Gaudì in Barcellona, Spain. She chose a small plot of land in the wild Maremma, located in Gravicchio, just a few kilometers away from Capalbio. She created and personally built the great statues for the garden - the 22 Major Arcana have a steel soul covered by concrete and decorated with mirrors, coloured glass and ceramics. She worked at this colossal project for over 17 years, collaborating with Jean Tinguely who is also her husband. The sculptures represent the personal artist's view of the symbolic and esoteric Tarots cards, one of her passions. Their arrangement in the park is impressive and evocative. The Empress is probably the most representative sculpture: portrayed as a large woman-sphinx, this artistic house was also where Niki lived while working on the garden. The Justice, englobing a sculpture by Jean Tinguely representing iniquity imprisoned by a huge lock, and then the Tree of Life, whose branches are snakes and covered by designs and texts by the artist. You may also admire The Devil, The Magician, The Sun and all other Major Arcana. After this visit on your own, as per the artist's will, you will drive to the hill-top village of Capalbio for a stroll with view or a relaxing stop. Enjoy the view from the city-walls down onto the valley and seashore just few miles away.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking of approximately 1.20 miles (2.0 km) sometimes over cobblestone surfaces, with some steps to negotiate. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend guests wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes as well as bring sun protection.

The Tufa Cities & Gourmet Lunch

Today, it will be time to venture onto the fascinating country roads that will take us back in time! The 'Tufa cities' were built on stunning rocks and the first impression you get is that of a town which is bravely hanging on to the cliff, and whose houses seem to spring directly from the rock. Visit Pitigliano first, in the heart of the Etruscan region. Pitigliano is also known as the "Little Gerusalem" as in the past a large Jewish community lived here after their exile from the city of Rome. Admire the aqueduct, perfectly preserved, the cathedral but most important visit the Synagogue and jewish Museum. This building is small, perfectly in tune with the atmosphere you breathe in this 4.000 years old town. Here, the 'Bianco di Pitigliano' DOC wine is made, a straw-colored white wine with a delicate fragrance that is stored strictly in tufa cellars. Lunch will be served at restaurant Da Caino in Montemerano - a refined restaurant by Relais&Chateaux, half an hour drive from Pitigliano. After this gourmet experience visit Sovana, included in the list of the most charming villages in Italy. Here time seems to have come to a stand still. You will admire the Cathedral built in the 11th century and later you will profit of some free time for a stroll and photos before resuming the drive back to the Argentario port, with view of the quiet Orbetello lagoon and Argentario mountain on the sea.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking of approximately 1.55 miles (2.5 km) sometimes over cobblestone surfaces, with some steps to negotiate. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend guests wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes as well as bring sun protection.

Wine Experience at Antinori "Le Mortelle" Winery with lunch

Today, you will have the opportunity to explore the fascinating country roads that lead to some of the most prestigious wine estates in Tuscany - Le Mortelle by Marchesi Antinori, situated on a soft hill just off Castiglione della Pescaia. The Antinori family has been part of this territory for generations. Evidence of ownership of land in this area is recorded on a property deed dated 1863. It states their ownership of Poggio Franco, one of the best vineyards on the estate, together with other parcels of land. The 170 hectares (420 acres) are planted with vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and other more recently planted vineyards with white grape varieties such as Vermentino, Ansonica, Viognier and a small parcel of Carménère. The soil is of medium consistency, sandy and loamy composed of clay and silica and in some parts of the estate is rich in rock deposits. The winery is on top of a hillside that overlooks the entire estate and was built largely underground to minimize its environmental impact. All natural building materials were used to maximize sustainability and the underground bedrock foundation provides completely natural temperature and humidity control. The tour of the vineyards includes a stop by the lake on the estate and a small pic-nic with tasting of Le Mortelle white wine Vivia (Vermentino, Viognier, Ansonica) with homemade focaccia and blueberries from the estate orchard. Walk back to the property and after the visit of the vineyards, a guided tour of the cellar will follow with explanation of wine process ending with a winetasting of the best wines. Some free time to shop at the local shop followed by a lunch served along with Le Mortelle red wines Botrosecco (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc) and the Poggio alle Nane (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère).before returning to the ship after a precious insight in the Tuscan wine culture and memories.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking of approximately 1.25 miles (about 2.0 km) and a few steps to negotiate at the estate and to get off/on the coach. However, this tour is recommended to guests with limited mobility and who utilize a wheelchair that can transfer from chair. We recommend guests wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes as well as bring sun protection.
