Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach Palermo, Sicily

Palermo, Sicily

Once the intellectual capital of southern Europe, Palermo has always been at the crossroads of civilization. Favorably situated on a crescent-shaped bay at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, it has attracted almost every culture touching the Mediterranean world. To Palermo's credit, it has absorbed these diverse cultures into a unique personality that is at once Arab and Christian, Byzantine and Roman, Norman and Italian. View more

The city's heritage encompasses all of Sicily's varied ages, but its distinctive aspect is its Arab-Norman identity, an improbable marriage that, mixed in with Byzantine and Jewish elements, created some resplendent works of art. No less noteworthy than the architecture is Palermo's chaotic vitality, on display at some of Italy's most vibrant outdoor markets, public squares, street bazaars, and food vendors, and above all in its grand climax of Italy's most spectacular passeggiata (the leisurely social stroll along the principal thoroughfare).

Exkursionen in Palermo, Sicily

Experience the Medieval beauty of Sicily's west coast during this scenic and memorable full-day excursion to Erice and Segesta.

Depart the pier for a scenic sightseeing drive through Palermo, then head to Sicily's west coast for a visit to Erice, a lovely town perched on an isolated hill north of Trapani.

Erice

This small Medieval town was founded in 415 B.C., and renowned in ancient times as an important sanctuary of Venus. Although it is often shrouded in mist due to its hilltop location, Erice offers splendid views of the sea and Egadi Islands.

The Walls

Erice's Norman-style influences are reflected in its imposing towers and fortifications. During your walking tour, see the walls that stretch from Porta Spada to Porta Trapani, and protect the only side of the hill with no natural defenses. On all other sides, the sheer rock face made the town one of the most impregnable fortresses on the island.

Balio Gardens and Venus Castle

Other historic sites that may be encountered during your visit include the delightful, English-style Balio Gardens and the ancient Venus Castle, which offers exquisite panoramic vistas and an up-close look at the remains of the Temple of Venus.

Following your guided visit, some free time is made available for you to browse the shops before proceeding for a typical Sicilian lunch. After lunch, re-board your coach for the drive to nearby Segesta.

Segesta

Upon arrival in Segesta, discover why the view of the renowned Doric temple on a bare hill in the deserted countryside has awed visitors for centuries. Walk up the path and steps from the coach parking area, then past the agave plants and on to the extremely well-preserved temple, which was thought to have been built by a Greek architect between 424-416 B.C.

Afterward, re-board your coach for the 1-1.5-hour return drive to the pier via Palermo's historic centre.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.2 miles (about 1.9 kilometres), at times over uneven, cobblestone, and slippery surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and stairs at the sites visited. Visit of Erice and Segesta are entirely on foot. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. The tour sequence may vary.

Sicily's diverse historic landmarks and architectural beauty are yours to discover during this scenic coach and walking tour of Palermo and Monreale.

Depart the pier for a brief sightseeing drive through the city of Palermo.

Palermo

As you proceed through the crowded, picturesque streets of this ancient town, pass by bustling crossroads of Quattro Canti that mark its centre. Palermo's unique Byzantine-Saracen-Norman architecture is a fascinating amalgam of its rich and remarkably diverse heritage.

Palatine Chapel and Norman Castle

A visit is then made to the impressive Palatine Chapel, located in the Norman Palace, or 'Palazzo dei Normanni'. The chapel's Arabo-Norman influences are reflected in its gold and colored mosaics, intricately-carved candelabrum and ceiling. Today, the building is the seat of the Sicilian Parliament.

Monreale

Next, re-board your coach for the visit to Monreale, located approximately five miles (eight kilometres) from Palermo. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the Cathedral, designed and built by William the Good in 1174 A.D., and said to be Italy's most beautiful Norman Church.

Norman Cathedral and Benedictine Cloister

With its thick walls and powerful towers, Monreale's exterior looks like an austere fortress. However, the Cathedral's interior is its crowning glory. The large nave has side aisles and grey granite columns that highlight the exquisite Byzantine mosaics adorning the walls above the arches. A visit is also made to the Benedictine Cloister. The courtyard is enclosed by an arcade supported by 216 sets of twin columns, each with a different design and richly-decorated capitals.

Following your walking tour, some free time is made available to visit one of the lovely cafes or browse the local shops at your leisure. Afterward, re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier via Palermo's historic centre.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.5 (about 0.9 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, many steps (abt 90) from the Monreale parking area to the city centre. Walking in Monreale is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Expect crowds and long lines at the Palatine Chapel ( steps to enter into the site) .

Monreale's Benedictine Cloister is closed on Sundays and bank holidays; a visit to St John of Eremits is substituted.

Discover the scenic splendour and historic landmarks of Palermo, and visit the picturesque beachfront town of Mondello during this memorable, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Next, a visit is made to the magnificent Cathedral, which was built in the 12th-century by an archbishop and transformed into a mosque during Muslim occupation. The basilica houses six Royal Tombs, and was restored to the hands of Christianity by the Normans. The remains of Palermo's protector, St. Rosalia, are stored in the chapel in an urn of pure silver.
