Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo
Monte Carlo

On one of the best stretches of the Mediterranean, this classic luxury destination is one of the most sought-after addresses in the world. With all the high-rise towers you have to look hard to find the Belle Époque grace of yesteryear. View more

But if you head to the town's great 1864 landmark Hôtel de Paris—still a veritable crossroads of the buffed and befurred Euro-gentry—or enjoy a grand bouffe at its famous Louis XV restaurant, or attend the opera, or visit the ballrooms of the casino, you may still be able to conjure up Monaco's elegant past. Prince Albert II, a political science graduate from Amherst College, traces his ancestry to Otto Canella, who was born in 1070. The Grimaldi dynasty began with Otto's great-great-great-grandson, Francesco Grimaldi, also known as Frank the Rogue. Expelled from Genoa, Frank and his cronies disguised themselves as monks and in 1297 seized the fortified medieval town known today as Le Rocher (the Rock). Except for a short break under Napoléon, the Grimaldis have been here ever since, which makes them the oldest reigning family in Europe. In the 1850s a Grimaldi named Charles III made a decision that turned the Rock into a giant blue chip. Needing revenue but not wanting to impose additional taxes on his subjects, he contracted with a company to open a gambling facility. The first spin of the roulette wheel was on December 14, 1856. There was no easy way to reach Monaco then—no carriage roads or railroads—so no one came. Between March 15 and March 20, 1857, one person entered the casino—and won two francs. In 1868, however, the railroad reached Monaco, and it was filled with Englishmen who came to escape the London fog. The effects were immediate. Profits were so great that Charles eventually abolished all direct taxes. Almost overnight, a threadbare principality became an elegant watering hole for European society. Dukes (and their mistresses) and duchesses (and their gigolos) danced and dined their way through a world of spinning roulette wheels and bubbling champagne—preening themselves for nights at the opera, where such artists as Vaslav Nijinsky, Sarah Bernhardt, and Enrico Caruso came to perform. Along with the tax system, its sensational position on a broad, steep peninsula that bulges into the Mediterranean—its harbor sparkling with luxury cruisers, its posh mansions angling awnings toward the nearly perpetual sun—continues to draw the rich and famous. One of the latest French celebrities to declare himself "Monégasque," thus giving up his French passport, is superchef Alain Ducasse, who said that he made the choice out of affection for Monaco rather than tax reasons. Pleasure boats vie with luxury cruisers in their brash beauty and Titanic scale, and teams of handsome young men—themselves dyed blond and tanned to match—scour and polish every gleaming surface. As you might expect, all this glitz doesn't come cheap. Eating is expensive, and even the most modest hotels cost more here than in nearby Nice or Menton. As for taxis, they don't even have meters so you are completely at the driver's mercy (with prices skyrocketing during events such as the Grand Prix). For the frugal, Monaco is the ultimate day-trip, although parking is as coveted as a room with a view. At the very least you can afford a coffee at Starbucks. The harbor district, known as La Condamine, connects the new quarter, officially known as Monte Carlo with Monaco-Ville (or Le Rocher), a medieval town on the Rock, topped by the palace, the cathedral, and the Oceanography Museum. Have no fear that you'll need to climb countless steps to get to Monaco-Ville, as there are plenty of elevators and escalators climbing the steep cliffs. But shuttling between the lovely casino grounds of Monte Carlo and Old Monaco, separated by a vast port, is a daunting proposition for ordinary mortals without wings, so hop on the No. 1 bus from Saint Roman, or No. 2 from the Jardin Exotique - Both stop at Place du Casino and come up to Monaco Ville.

Côte d'Azur Flightseeing

Marvel at the dramatic coastline of the famed French Riviera in the air and take in spectacular views of Port Hercules, home to some of the most luxurious yachts in the world and the location of the James Bond film GoldenEye. Catch a glimpse of the Monaco Grand Prix race circuit and see the incredibly famous Monte Carlo Casino. Experience the stunning panoramic beauty of the Cote d'Azur in a unique way during this scenic and exhilarating helicopter flight-seeing tour.

Depart the pier for the brief transfer to the Fontvieille helicopter pad. Upon arrival, receive your safety and flight instructions then board the helicopter.

Helicopter Ride

After lift-off, the helicopter commences the 20-minute flight over Monaco's streets, the Prince's Palace, the Cathedral, the famous Oceanographic Museum and the surrounding Italian border. Next head towards Roquebrune Village which is a marvellous village adorned with red tiles, and features a 10th-century castle. From here, your flight continues over the Cap Martin, Menton and the Italian border.

The return flight travels towards the village of La Turbie for a look at the famous 'Trophée d'Auguste', a Roman monument symbolising the power of Rome and the glory of Augustus. Now only 115 feet (35 meters) in height, the ruin is still an imposing monument 2,000 years after it was built.

Upon leaving La Turbie fly back down to the coast via Cap d'Ail and return to the Fontvieille helicopter pad.

On arrival, re-board your van for the brief transfer to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking; however, guests must be able to board the helicopter without assistance. The actual flight time is approximately 20 minutes. Price is per person, with a minimum/maximum of four guests required to operate this tour. Due to security reasons, the pilot does not provide in-flight commentary.

Monaco & Monte Carlo

Explore the scenic beauty of Monaco and Monte-Carlo with this memorable half-day sightseeing tour of the Old Town and Casino Square. Monaco, a constitutional monarchy on the Riviera measuring less than a square mile, evokes high-stakes gambling, multimillion-dollar yachts, Russian oligarchs, racecar drivers, James Bond films, spotless sidewalks and no public debt.

Depart the pier for the brief drive to the Old Town of Monaco on the 'Rock'.

St. Martin's Gardens and Cathedral

Upon arrival, stroll through gorgeous St. Martin's Gardens and up to the Cathedral where the religious wedding ceremony was held on April 19, 1956. Six-hundred guests, including heads of state, diplomats and Hollywood luminaries, watched as Grace Kelly, dressed in a gown consisting of 25 yards of silk taffeta, peau de soie, tulle and 125-year old Brussels rose point lace married Prince Rainier III. Today, the cathedral houses the tombs of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier.

Prince's Palace

Following your cathedral visit, continue on to the Prince's Palace, where HSH Prince Albert II, eldest son of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, now resides (no visit of the State apartments)

Monte-Carlo

This is the heart of luxury in the Principality. You will walk in front of the Monte-Carlo Casino and Opera House, built in 1893 by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opera House. Its marble paved atrium, surrounded with 28 Ionic columns made of onyx, gives access to the Opera Hall which is entirely decorated in red and gold, with bas-reliefs and sculptures. See the Hotel de Paris, the Café de Paris and the wonderful Casino gardens.

Following your visit, re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of uphill walking, with stairs to negotiate and elevators in the Old Town. Local currency and passport is required to enter.

Leave the hustle and bustle of Monaco behind during this picturesque coach and walking tour of Nice and Eze. The tiny village of Eze is one of the jewels of the south of France which is probably why it is chosen as a holiday spot by royalty, the rich and the famous. The deep blue waters of the Cote d'Azur are the dramatic backdrop for elegant Nice where you can get an eagle eye of the whole city from atop Castle Hill; view the pedestrians-only Place Rossetti in the heart of the city, with a grand fountain, vibrant buildings, and the beautiful Sainte-Réparate Cathedral giving it a provincial French feel.

Depart from Fontvieille landing pier on foot with your guide to reach approx 500 m the pick up point assigned for the coaches due to Grand Prix.

Eze

Upon arrival, walk up to and through the 14th-century double gateway. A sentry walk leads into the steep and narrow streets, passageways and stairways. At times, the streets run beneath the carefully-restored houses that now serve as smart boutiques or artists' studios.

Nice

After a little free time to explore the village on your own, drive to Nice, the capital of the French Riviera, along the "Promenade des Anglais", a splendid palm-lined boulevard stretching along the Baie des Anges. You will pass landmarks like the legendary Negresco, an imposing hotel with its Belle Epoque façade. See the Russian Orthodox Cathedral, built with pink bricks, light gray marble and vivid colour ceramics, all sitting beneath six onion shaped domes that lend an exotic touch to the Nice landscape.

Next, visit the Old City, where tall houses tightly-packed across narrow streets are often festooned with bright flowers or hanging laundry, and designed to provide shade and keep the streets cool during the long, hot summers. A stop is made for a leisurely stroll along the Cours Saleya, the elegant promenade of Old Nice, which is now lined with shops, restaurants and the famous Flower Market.

Following your visit and some free time; re-board your coach for the scenic return drive to Monte Carlo.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking, at times on hills and cobblestone streets, and is not recommended for guests with limited mobility and guests in wheelchair. This tour is offered in Monaco during the Grand Prix. At this time and due to extreme traffic and parking limitations, there may be a 10 to 20 minute guided walk to the coach parking location. The order of the stops can vary according to the traffic on this special week-end. A minimum number of guests per guide are required to operate this programme. She became a supporter of charities and cultural events and much of her time was devoted to her three children.

The 'Wedding of the Century' enamoured the world when Grace Patricia Kelly (1929-1982), the Philadelphia-born, Academy Award-winning actress, married Monaco's Prince Rainier III (1923-2005).

St. Martin's Gardens and Cathedral

Just imagine…two wonderful days to relax and enjoy this legendary property and the surrounding region. On the final morning of your program, transfer to the French Riviera and embark the ship.

Please note: Guests participating in this program should schedule their flights into Milan's Malpensa Airport.

Day 1 - ARRIVE MILAN

Upon arrival at Malpensa Airport in Milan, you are met and transferred to the town of Cernobbio, located north of the town of Como. The drive normally takes about 1 hour. Upon arrival, proceed for check-in at the Villa d'Este, the legendary, 16th-century villa nestled on the shores of Lake Como. The balance of the afternoon and evening are spent at your leisure in this world-class resort. Lunch and dinner are on your own.

Overnight at the Villa d'Este - Cernobbio, ltaly

Day 2 - CERNOBBIO

After breakfast at the hotel, the balance of the day is spent at your leisure exploring the area or simply relaxing amidst your exquisite surroundings. You may opt to take a boat-ride on the lake to the 16th-century Villa Balbianello, located on the extreme tip of a wooded promontory called Dosso di Lavedo. Thanks to its rugged terrain, the peninsula has retained the extraordinary natural features that enhance the solitary and romantic nature of the villa. In 1974, the villa was willed to the Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which has since opened it to the public. The Concierge is happy to assist you with making these or other arrangements. Lunch and dinner are on your own.
