Silversea Luxury Cruises Nach Mombasa

Mombasa

You may well find yourself in Mombasa for a few hours or an overnight stop. The city (which is actually an island linked to the mainland by a ferry) is the second oldest trade center with Arabia and the Far East. Today it still plays an important role as the main port for Kenya. Although it lacks the beautiful beaches of the north and south, it has a rich, fascinating history. Visit the Old Town with its narrow streets lined with tiny shops and souks (markets). View more

The Old Harbour, frequented by numerous dhows, is an ideal place to arrange a short cruise on one of these local boats that have plied the oceans for centuries. Fort Jesus, designed by an Italian and built by the Portuguese in the late 16th century, is a major visitor draw and well worth a visit. In summer there's an impressive sound-and-light show.

This spectacular Crater itself is home to more than 25,000 large mammals. Once a large volcano that later collapsed, it is now the largest intact caldera in the world, with a lake on its floor and walls covered in lush vegetation.  Offering easy sightings of the 'Big Five' this is truly a unique safari destination for our in-transit guests

DAY ONE - Mombasa/Ngorongoro Lodge

From the port of Mombasa, transfer to the airport and board our chartered 12-seater Caravan aircraft (or similar) for the one-hour flight to Kilimanjaro for Customs and Immigration clearance. The route inland overflies hills and the vast African plains. In clear weather, you may catch a glimpse of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival, you are met and greeted with a picnic lunch.  Afterwards, proceed to the Ngorongoro highland area for check-in, and then spend time at leisure to experience the unforgettable Ngorongoro Lodge.

Set in 50 acres (20 hectare) of virgin Tanzanian bush in the Ngorongoro volcanic landscape, Ngorongoro Lodge is an all-suite, wood log cabin-style retreat, located a few steps from the Game Reserve Gate, and a 20-minute drive away from the Ngorongoro Crater.  Settle into your spacious private cottages with an open fire place in the bedroom and living room and large private viewing terraces with sofa and dining area.  The king-size canopy bed is welcomed at the evening's end.  Indulge in moments of relaxation at the swimming pool or if you desire, visit the Mvua African Rain Spa after a full-day game drive. There is a butler on-call.

Dinner and overnight at Exploreans Ngorongoro Lodge - Ngorongoro

DAY TWO - Ngorongoro Crater Exploration

After breakfast, depart for a full day in the crater, with a picnic lunch at about mid-day.  The Ngorongoro Conservation Area covers 892 square miles (2286 square kilometres) and encompasses the volcanic area around the Ngorongoro Crater - including the still active volcano of Oldonyo Lengai and the famous Olduvai Gorge. Its centrepiece is the Ngorongoro Crater, is the largest unbroken caldera in the world and the first sight of it is breath-taking.

From the rim of the Crater, you will make your descend into this great caldera. Declared a sanctuary in 1928, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area contains within its borders 30,000 animals, with a high concentration of predators, including the last population of black rhino in northern Tanzania and all the 'big five' game animals. The floor of the crater is only 100 square miles (260 square kilometres). Diverse habitats of forest, swamp, grassland and lake make it a fascinating area to explore. The multitude of wildlife found inside the Crater and the fact that the animals do not seem to take notice of humans, enables photographers to shoot with ease.

The largest expanse of water on the crater floor is Lake Magadi, where you may see thousands of flamingos shimmering like a pink haze. Relax from tracking and picture taking with a picnic lunch at the bottom of the Crater in the company of hippos and birds.

After spending most of the day in the crater, proceed to a visit of a local Maasai Village. Thereafter depart to your lodge, and have some time to relax before meeting the rest of the group for sundowners, followed by dinner.

The Mara is considered the finest game sanctuary in the country, home to an astonishing number and variety of animals. There is no way to predict what you might see, so keep your eyes trained on the bush. Luxuriant forest grows along the banks of the Mara River, where hippos and crocodiles bask in the sun. The trees showing up in the distance may turn out to be a family of giraffes, and what looks like a clump of bushes may be a pride of lions. For your convenience, we can easily organise transfers between the airport and hotel or between the hotel and the pier so that you only have to decide how much or how little you wish to do.

Please note that for Mombasa embarkation and disembarkation we use a hotel property in Nairobi.

Hotel brands that we consistently feature include Intercontinental, JW Marriott, Fairmont or the Conrad Group.
