Highlights of Matsuyama

Get an overview of Matsuyama landmarks during this half day excursion to the historical Matsuyama Castle and the Dogo area, famous for it's onsen (hot spring).


Matsuyama Castle

Depart the pier for an approximate 30-minute drive to Matsuyama Castle. This Castle is very well located as an ideal defense fort in the center of Matsuyama city. Its tower is one of twelve that exists since the Edo-era in Japan. This site is also one of Japan's 100 Best Castles.


Dogo Shopping Street

Next, re-board your coach and proceed to Dogo Shopping Street. Approximately 60 shops on both sides of Dogo Shopping Street have been rebuilt during the Meiji-era. You can taste a little of the "Meiji Romance" feeling while walking through this street.


Dogo Onsen (Hot Spring) Main Building

The tour proceeds to Dogo Onsen (Hot Spring). These are the oldest hot springs in Japan, with a history stretching back over 1,000 years and are mentioned in Nihon-shoki, the oldest chronicles of Japan. The main building is the most important and the symbol of Dogo onsen(hot spring). Time permitting you can experience the Dogo onsen (hot spring). and relax before returning to the ship.

Afterwards, re-board your coach and commence the approximate 40-minute drive back to the pier.


Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for one mile (1.6 kilometer), with approximately 130 steps to negotiate at the Matsuyama Castle and 20 steps at the Dogo Onsen main building. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilize a wheelchair. This tour is not recommended for guests who may have heart, lung or kidney conditions. Due to its popularity guests might experience a waiting time of approx. 30 to 60 minutes to enter the Hot Springs. When entering the Hot Springs it is expected (in line with local customs and traditions) to take a bath without swimwear. Separate dressing rooms are provided for men and women. Guests with body Tattoos are not permitted to enter the hot springs. Guests wishing to enter the hot springs are advised to bring a towel from the ship. Japanese Yen is required for any additional purchases. Although a minimum number of participants are required to operate this tour, space is limited. We suggest you book this excursion in advance to avoid any disappointment.

Yuzukijo Castle Site & Strolling into Local life

Explore ancient religious sites and the Dogo area during this half day excursion to Dogo Park.


Dogo Park

Depart the pier for an approximate 35-minute drive to Dogo Park. In Dogo Park, you can observe the Yuzukijo Castle ruin and a well-made replica of a samurai compound. Masaoka Shiki's haiku, tanka, novels, watercolors, and other cultural figures related to Matsuyama are collected and displayed in this small museum.


Ishite Temple

Next, re-board your coach and proceed to Ishite Temple. Most of the buildings in this temple are spectacular, they are considered National Treasures, important Cultural Property of Japan. There, you will find a special hall displaying treasures from the Temple.


Dogo Shopping Street

The tour proceeds to Dogo Shopping Street. Approximately 60 shops on both sides of Dogo Shopping Street have been rebuilt during the Meiji-era. You can feel the "Meiji Romance"in the air while walking through this street.

Towel Museum is the first museum to propose towel culture in the world. You can experience observing not only towel factory but also art works made from towel. You can also enjoy shopping very high quality towel.


Imabari Castle

Next, re-board your coach to a local restaurant to have lunch. After lunch you will proceed to Imabari Castle. Todo Takatora who settled and possessed Shikoku-area due to warfare at the Sekigahara battle made large-scale castle built on the coast facing the Setonai Sea and it is called Imabari Castle.

Afterwards, re-board your coach and commence approximately 2 hours' drive back to the pier.
