More than 600 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the world's northernmost town is also one of the most widely visited and oldest places in northern Norway. "Hammerfest" means "mooring place" and refers to the natural harbor (remarkably free of ice year-round thanks to the Gulf Stream) that is formed by the crags in the mountain. Hammerfest is the gateway to the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean, a jumping-off point for Arctic expeditions. Once a hunting town, Hammerfest's town emblem features the polar bear. View more

In 1891 the residents of Hammerfest, tired of the months of darkness that winter always brought, decided to brighten their nights: they purchased a generator from Thomas Edison, and Hammerfest thus ecame the first city in Europe to have electric street lamps. In addition to two museums, there are several shops within Hammerfest's small city center. There is also a market selling souvenirs and other goods outside the town hall.

Exkursionen in Hammerfest

Hammerfest & Forsøl

Discover the scenic beauty and landmarks of the world's northernmost town during this picturesque excursion to Hammerfest.

Hammerfest and Bird's Peninsula

Depart the pier for the brief drive through the town centre of Hammerfest, then continue on to the Bird's Peninsula, or 'Fuglenes'. Here, see the area's major attraction, the Meridian Column. It was erected in commemoration of the 1852 measuring work carried out by Russian, Swedish and Norwegian scientists to determine the size and shape of the earth.

Forsøl

Next, drive past the small airport and through residential areas with their attractive new wooden homes. Along the way, your guide recounts interesting facts about daily life in Hammerfest. From here, head to the tiny fishing village of Forsøl to see ruins of dwellings from the Stone, Iron and Middle ages.

Salen Viewpoint and Royal Polar Bear Club

Your tour continues with a drive up to the Salen Viewpoint. This hill is approximately 262 feet (about 80 metres) in height, and offers splendid views overlooking the town and the fjord. Reindeer are sometimes seen grazing here. Afterward, re-board your coach for the brief return drive to the pier, with a stop at Hammerfest's Royal Polar Bear Club en route.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking, and is suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.

Explore the culture, lifestyles and traditions of northern Scandinavia during this memorable visit to a local Sami camp in Mikkelgammen.

Walking Tour to Mikkelgammen

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute walk through the market-square and up a winding road to Mikkelgammen, which is perched at the top of Mount Salen and overlooks the town centre. Upon arrival in Mikkelgammen, your hosts Solveig and Mikkel Sara greet your arrival and invite you into their camp.

Sami Camp Visit

Join them in their lavvu, a traditional turf hut used by the nomadic Sami, or 'Lapp', while herding and moving on the tundra. Relax on a reindeer skin by an open fire and sample some Sami dishes while Solveig and Mikkel recount the history, culture and everyday life of their people. Mikkel will also demonstrate joik, the typical Sami form of singing and chanting.

Following your visit, this interesting cultural outing concludes with an approximately 30-minute walk back down to the pier.

Please note: This tour is entirely on foot and requires an extensive amount of walking. It is recommended only for guests in good physical condition, and is not suitable for those with limited mobility or guests who utilise a wheelchair.
